[Award] General: PAX Prime 2013 Awards

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Now that PAX Prime is behind us, our team got together to talk about the games they saw and have come to a consensus as to which ones were the best of the best. See what they chose for the PAX Prime 2013 Awards and then head to the comments to discuss.

This year at PAX Prime 2103 we had a host of solid games to look at. Many had playable demos on the show floor and some had amazing things to show off in panels and presentations. Overall we want to thank every game at the show for bringing us out and allowing us time to play. So without further chatter, let’s get to the MMORPG.com PAX Prime 2013 Awards.

Check out The PAX Prime 2013 Awards.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

    Wildstar looking nice? Omg....

So I guess MMORPG is doomed to repeat history again and again with worshipping obvious major IP stinkers like SWTOR and now ESO.

The writing is on the wall, just look at the ESO gameplay videos and you have enough to close the door on the game. But then that doesn't generate revenue like pumping up a huge IP with ads and positive reviews.

    oh please.

I played the game and have consistently said that those videos don't do the game justice.

Not to say they are going to have a hit but anyone basing their decision primarily on those videos needs to try it first before making a decision.

And SWToR was/is a fine game, just messed up on pvp and they missed the mark on "end game".

I'm glad it turns out that EQ Landmark isn't just a building tool but a standalone MMO.  They were a bit vague on that before.  One thing that is missing so far though, is some form of conflict in the game world.  They haven't even decided if there will be mobs.  If they don't though, even as a pure sandbox construction game, it will fail.  We've seen this before.  There has to be some game inside you game. There has to be a reason to build and craft.  In the end, it's not Minecraft, and won't be as accessible as Minecraft on cheap hardware.

I backed the Repopulation a long time ago, and development has been steady ever since.  It's on my (very) short list of upcoming games to be excited about.  This late in the year though, with not even a closed beta yet, one has to wonder if the game is going to make it out in 2013.  I'm optimistic, and just sitting back and seeing what happens.  It's too bad they aren't a bit further along though, because this Fall would be a great time for them to release it.  Better they get it done right though.

I hope their server cluster provider (Hero Cloud) is ready for the Repopulation to get completely hammered at launch, like we have seen with Final Fantasy.  With as many bad MMOs as there are, and the trend in MMO hopping, it wouldn't be wise for them to assume anything less than an onslaught of curious players on launch day.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

I've been patiently waiting for the Repopulation too, but just know, there is no way it's coming out this Fall, and most likely not even this year. It's only on alpha build two with another alpha build coming after the second one.

the problem with trade show awards is pretty much anyone that shows and gives a presentation, for the most part gets an award since its not like THAT many show up to these things.

its like getting a achievers participation award in kindegarden.  pretty much everyone gets one.

    Games i'm playing right now...

I just don't get how wildstar is different from wow? I'm not talking about the specific differences, I am referring to it in a broader sense.

Look at dungeons for example. You have the same tank/healer/DPS roles which is fine for me but you're clearing the same stupid trash mobs and then for boss fights, you're hand-held WHERE damage will occur, just make sure you're not standing in that red circle!

It's sad that this kind of hand-holding is still going on. I thought we were all sick of the wow-type crap?

The combat in Wildstar alone is enough to kill the comparison to WOW. Wildstar is much more dynamic than WOW, sure the art styles may share a bit of similarities, but it's not WOW. I urge you to watch some feature vids on it.

I don't understand the Wildstar hype to be honest I see tons of people talking about it but every video i've seen doesn't make me go "OMG must play"
  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,273

Wildstar is out sooner than any other MMO mentioned here, hence the hype. It seems EQ Next will have to get an award every time awards are given out from now on. It is in way too early a stage of development to say it is innovative or to say anything else, but that won't stop awards flooding in.

PS2 is a MMOFPS not a MMO hybrid, that term hybrid could mean just about anything. The award was well deserved.

Neither Wildstar, Elder Scrolls, Repopulation, Planetside 2, nor Everquest Next do anything for me at all.

I'm more enamored with FFXIV and the possibilities for the next WoW expansion.

I guess only category for FFXIV would be for Best of Show, but there is lots of Wildstar hype... which I don't get to be honest.

I think all of the awards are very fair. Based on what I have seen at PAX - Wildstar definitely stood out the most from the rest. It plays nothing like WoW - I know it may look that way from video's but it plays like a beast of its own.

ESO is easily the most anticipated all you have to look at was the size of the line of people who wanted to try it. It has nothing to do with MMORPG being in bed with them. I didn't like it but there are a lot of people who are really waiting for that title.

EQ2 Landmark - all I can say if they can pull it off correctly they do have potential to change the face of MMOs forever. All I saw were some really cool presentations and screenshots and a lot of "We will be able to turn water into wine and tin into gold" speeches. Too early to say if they can pull it off.

Repopulation - ahhh I really wish I could say that this will be good. I loved SWG and UO but times change and they are just trying to take old systems from those games and stick them into a modern game without looking at possible improvements that they can make. I have played some PvP while at PAX and it plays almost exactly like SWG, I mean everything felt like SWG. My biggest turn off was lag - I get it this is an alpha but when you are trying to show something off at least put a dedicated server for me to play on so I will not have insta-deaths on respawns due to lag. If they can fix their bugs and latency issue this might be worth another look but after talking to some of their dev team members I have serious doubts.

I really don't think that it has much to do with hype. Feelings aside WildStar has the most effective showing at PAX. FF14:RR booth had almost no staff and they had the same generic movie playing over and over - nothing else was going on.

ESO - they were so busy with massive crowd they had they there was not enough staff for anything else.

Wild Star - had great booth, a lot of people always walking around answering questions about the game. They had the most creative booth layout and multiple presentations through out PAX.

I think a lot of time people focus on what the game is about and their likes and dislikes vs what was actually shown.

    Wildstar looks very good.

"No game is carrying quite as much weight as Elder Scrolls Online."

You mean except for EQN...another bogus award. Hell, Wildstar is more popular here than TESO.

  • RoxtarrRoxtarr Member CommonPosts: 1,122
Can't argue with any of these choices here. Glad to see WildStar get some of the props it deserves.

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.
