Is the whole 'omgz0rz LOLOL' thing a stereotype?

You know the people. The ones that can't talk/type properly and instead spout rubbish like 'omg!! LOLOL i wnt PVP!!!'.

Only thing is, I've never experienced this. I've heard people talk about them in reviews, and posts, but hell, I've never met anyone who spoke/typed like that.

So do people actually do that?
Is it confined to some MMOs/games?

And second, I get the whole !!!!111 thing at the bit of the sentence they supposedly said. But then people say they supposedly said 'something!!!111oneone"

Why the hell would you type out oneone?

I hope that made sense, this topic is kinda a spur of the moment thing.

lol.  I have not ever experienced anyone that actually talk like that all the time either.  It is just an insult to someones intelligence more than anything.  When person A thinks person B is acting childish or stupid, they mock them by quoting them like that,  "OMG LOLzerz!!"

I think it's just a stereotype because I don't know people who do that all the time. I mean sometimes people will get in a rush. I never really understood why people bother with "l33t" speak. It almost takes more effort than just typing things out normally! :)

I think its just a kind of parody used to describe the stupidity/ignorance of a certain playerbase.

Though I've definately seen a few "OMG Lolz!!!!" in my time. ::::13::

It is a stereotype, but like all stereotypes it is based upon some truths.

Look around in the posts on this or any other message board, you'll find plenty of examples of this behavior in varying degrees. Play any MMOG long enough and you'll encounter a character or two like this...though I recall them far more often in the past than lately, but that's likely to me essentially ignoring them wholesale.

I sold a video card to someone via ebay and his feedback was written in that manner.

The interesting thing was that he lived close by and came to collect the card in person. He was 18 years old and repeating his last year of high school. Excruciatingly self-conscious, he came with his father and his father did most of the talking.

I bought the card for $299 brand new. He won my ebay auction for $325.

To my mind, 'owned' is equally distasteful.

My pet hate, which I nourish, is 'gamer' or using the word 'game' as a verb. It's not leet speak, it's much worse.

  • NeanderthalNeanderthal Member RarePosts: 1,861

I've seen quite a few gamers who speak in the afore mentioned manner.

Heh, did I use the word 'gamer' properly in that sentence, elate?  I did that just for you.  I'll admit that I use 'gamer' routinely.  I don't see a problem with that.  We invent words as needed.  We needed a word for a particular subset of people so 'gamer' became a word.  Using 'game' as a verb, though, seems a little unnecessary when you could just use 'play' or 'playing.'

My theory about leet speach is that it's used by semi-illiterate people as a way of covering their inability to spell correctly or even close to correctly.  Instead of trying to spell correctly and embarrassing themselves they deliberately garble and misspell under the guise of defying the conventions of grammer and spelling.

Everyone makes spelling and grammatical errors but some people make so many that they would rather go even further and garble their text deliberately than to admit that they are close to being illiterate.  Heck, I probably made a few mistakes in this post and I'm not even going to read back through it to check.  OMG U PEEPOLS R GRAMIR NATSIS 11!!11one

Lmfao i have actually met a couple of idiots who get all hyped up and type !!1!!!! ONE!!!
Personally i think anyone who does it is an idiot, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU ACTUALLY TYPE THE WORD: ONE.

I have an online friend from Louisiana who likes to "chat" in an unschooled-like cajun dialect,  if you know what I mean.  One day someone asked him if he really spoke that way.  My response was if he really spoke that way he wouldn't be able to type that way.  Of course, that's just reverse discrimination - suggesting that all people with a deep accent are illiterate, however, the point is, that anyone who can figure out how to type "l33t" speak isn't as dumb as they seem.

"Elite speech" which is what it actually translates to, is like a computerized model of the old pig latin.  Lord knows I could never understand that, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that I can't understand elite speech without a great deal of effort.  At least it's right there in front of me so I can figure it out though.  In any case, I don't disparage the one who can sit and type a page of the stuff - it's more like a rebus puzzle if the person is really good at it.

Yes, some of these kids may have reading and spelling problems, but their spatial abilities are fantastic.

I did not know about the !!!111oneone thing either

    was I supposed to?

The "!!11oneone!!!1one" is usually used by people like me who make fun of people who type "!!!!!!!111!!!!!!111". It's called sarcasm, in this case.

And yes, believe me, the "omgz0rz lolol" is used often in some free MMORPGs. I've mostly come by it in runescape because I always get 10+ people begging me for some "gp plz plz lolz" daily.

This is not an over-exagerrated sterotype, atleast it wasnt always like this...4 years ago playing HB INT, there was a majority of minority...in this case mexicans...they would get drunk and be typing and accutally talk like that...I do recall us using some wierd f'ed up number system...13 would mean "Nice down you have here" and 1 and 2 were yes and no...14 meant lol (its where the got Woogy from Arfan, when the pincushion man is on the 2nd movie)..It was extremly funny, and rather wierd..

My name there was 60Lashes...they called me 60Tac0z!!!

[12:38am] <+steve> don't speak of tampons in a channel like this

  • Yes, as others have noted, it is sarcasm, satire. ZOMG.

You cant argue with the fact that some of us are just dead lazy. You tell me what's easier, omgrofl pwned, or "Dear me, that was quite amusing. Apparently that player has upstaged you in a game you pay for, so you must spend the next three days attempting to humiliate them only to realize that one, they do not care, and secondly, it's just a game." :P

Pfft. Log into RuneScape at peak hours. I'm sure you could find someone. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone "!!!11!!!!one!" but most of the other stuff? On occasion. Mostly from guests in IRC because when someone posts like that on the forums they're almost sure to get reamed.
