Well I've been drawn in by free trail and lower price.
Game bought , installed and then fingers crossed played.
So far it's been nothing but fun, loving the different races and classes skills tied to weapons.
Questing actually has me reading the words for once. The instances are easy to get in and out of.
Have yet to give crafting ago, though this is never high one my list
So I'm hoping the joy continues.
Also high on the fun meter is no on going sub needed and maybe just maybe no cash shop needed either?
Comments
Cash shop is definitely not needed. I did spend a little on it just to expand my bank but it wasn't a huge need. Crafting is pretty mediocre though end game you can actually craft stuff you'd use at least.
It is definitely a fun game, suffers some longevity issues for a lot of players who want more of a gear progression at end game but plenty don't mind that.
I have been playing FFXIV for over a week now and every time I log in I just wonder to myself "why I am not simply playing Guild Wars 2 instead?" Both games offer almost the same things except GW2 is f2p... I will probably get back on myself.
THIS.
Plus, crafting is for XP and Achievemnts, NOT for making money. So do it with care.
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
This...this this this....and this. Just want to add a little bit more about "end game" but not everything(Like achievements, map completion, and etc).
The other post where good so far as well, please OP take note of the last part highlighted in red, if you can't live with out instance raids that require 40 men...you won't end up enjoying, however if you like open world boss fights that require massive amounts to take that boss down and get good awards I.E Ascendant weapons(by chance) then you'll have fun. Also scarlet invasions are fun as well for mid to high levels, give out good rewards as well. They also have fractals which give you a similar fix and they are fun and challenging.
Yet again you might need raids in order to stick to a game, GW2 doesn't have that, nor will they continue to add multiple tiers of gear like majority of the MMOs do. Now none of those things are bad but I know some people can't live without doing raids and gear tiers every month or so.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
And there are dozens to hundreds of games out there for those kinds of people. This game isn't one of them. The developers have said from Day 1 that they were wanting to and going to make something that is not the same as all the others currently on the market. Not another "WoW clone" (really would just be an "EQ clone", which WoW is, but whatever). That's what they've accomplished.
Raiding doesn't need to be a single, narrow definition. Tequatl, The Shatterer, Claws of Jormag, Flame Elemental, Mark II Golem, The Frozen Maw, ...all those can be summed up as raids. Sure the former are more raid-like in mechanical and organizational design than the latter ones, but they all require massive groups of players cooperating for the same objective. And expect A.Net to follow suit with making more fights similar to Tequatl (although tweaked down a bit on the difficulty scale).
As for the non-raiding aspects of the game, there's plenty of "end-game" (really hate that term). It's called "playing a fun game", and there is a multitude of fun activities in the game. Guilds have missions that include grouped bounties, puzzles, challenges, treks, and rushes. PvP players have choice of an open world style World-vs-World, where gear and level take into account, or the sPvP [mostly] balanced system of team combat. PvE players get a bulk of things to do with the current vanilla game content combined with the ever-changing Living Story every two weeks; there's really no end to the availability of something new for PvEers every month.
Gear chasing is for those that lose attachment to their avatar and care more about the #'s on the cloths they wear. Heck, I bet that if they could just be a floating suit of armor sans avatar, they would. Achievements, WvW ranks, completion of content...these are activities that show true progression of your character; not getting +5 sword swing.
Yeah I'll be that guy~.
GW2 is as much of a WoW clone as WoW is an EQ clone. Outside of 'they both have raids' there is very little that is the same between WoW and EQ. EQ was a heavily group based open world game with no PvP mini games, which is like the opposite of WoW in most respects.
While WoW and GW2 both have instanced based play, casual friendly leveling, pretty similar character building systems etc.
Neither one fits the clone mentality the way say Rift or Aion does though, but I had to pick nits with you.
Well said, that was actually what I was getting at, I must of failed miserably.
Also @Ender it isn't instant based gameplay. At least far as focus in PVE.

Also, I just learned this and have been playing for over a year XD
You can get bags based on your rank in PvP.
12 slot at rank 20, 15 slot at rank 30, and 18 slot at rank 40. I'm rank 25 atm (started a few weeks back) and I'll probably stop at rank 40.
"As you read these words, a release is seven days or less away or has just happened within the last seven days those are now the only two states youll find the world of Tyria."...Guild Wars 2
Yes. You spend a large portion of your time in GW2 sitting in an instance. Whether it be a PvP instance, the WvWvW which is all instances, dungeons which are instances, fractals which are instances, your personal story which are instances. EQ was nothing like that outside of LDON.
You can say this basicly about all modern mmos.
Wait so if you see people outside in the world its still instanced?
Not sure where he said that, but , ok.
He said "Large Portion" I figured he knew what he was talking about and asked. O_O
I don't know if you just don't understand what instancing is or you are trying to nitpick me. The only time you aren't in an instance in GW2 is when you are out exploring the world and doing world events and hearts or if you are in a city. The rest of the gameplay which is like 50% for most people all happens inside of an instance created for your character and group.
So when you are out in Queensdale doing a quest, no that isn't instanced. I never said the entire game was. But when you are in a dungeon, when you are doing PvP, when you are running fractals, doing personal story quests etc is all instanced.
Now you could certainly debate whether WvWvW is instanced or not but considering it levels you to 80 and applies completely different gear etc it is certainly separated from the rest of the game the same way instancing is.
EQ was not like that, until a later expansion any time you were in the game you were in world itself. It leads to a very different feel to the game.
GW2 doesn't play like a WoW clone but the basic game design is extremely close to WoW, much closer than WoW was to EQ imo.
WvW does level you up to 80, but having your level changed is a feature that applies nearly the whole game across, outside of towns.
Every part of content levels you down to whatever the level maximum is set for that area.
Other parts of the normal game world have leveled you up to 80 before, so lower level people could participate in higher level events. Having your level changed doesn't make it an instance. It's just a normal part of GW2 sliding people's levels around as appropriate for various content.
You also keep all your normal gear while in WvW. You are confusing it with sPvP where you have special PvP equipment. (sPvP definitely being instanced, and also using a separate set of gear)
It's also separated from other areas, but there are a physical network of gates connecting it. There are locations in other MMORPGs that require fancy travel methods to get to, that you can't walk to. Airships, ships, what have you.
It's not an instance in the sense that there is not a new copy created for your party, and you do not need to belong to a party to join in. It's a part of the world that people can freely move in and out of, and still exists even if everybody leaves, and has persistent settings for a week before it's reset (It's worth noting that in many MMORPGs that have server downtime and maintenance every monster/quest/whatever is reset during the downtime, so that isn't what makes something an instance either).
I rest my case. Lol.
I am not getting it I guess? Rest your case on what?
So Dungeons/Spvp/Story are instanced and to you that is a Large portion of the game. Thats all i wanted to clearify
You mean structured PvP, not WvW. WvW you come as you are. Your character will be stat up-leveled to 80, but your gear and skills are all the same. It's basically zoned, not instanced.
Oderint, dum metuant.
Yeah it is a large part to me, that is where a ton of time is spent in the game for most players. This is pretty standard in modern MMO's but the point was that GW2 plays like WoW at the basic core level. Much moreso than WoW played like EQ. I was just nitpicking the other statement.
I can't quite grasp how you're getting from "has instanced dungeons, a form of instanced PvP and instanced personal story lines" to "plays like WoW". I've played both and am quite thankful that this plays nothing like WoW.
Oderint, dum metuant.
FFXIV is kind of making me want to play WoW again. There's just more freedom in the world and the combat, and ... everything. Pity about the graphics though. As for GW2, not currently playing but still the absolute best value I've gotten in a game in the past 10 years at least. That and Left 4 Dead 2.
Maybe if GW2 was gear and trinity based with quest hubs I could see your point about it being similar to WoW. However, other than you need to log on to play and it's a fantasy setting I'm not sure how they are the same at the core level. Yes, I'm nitpicking with you, but I'm also curious.
To the OP: Enjoy the game for what it is, which for most of us is "fun". Now you know first hand what the game is about and how different it is compared to the pictures painted by a select few in these forums. (Not a reference to Ender4, but the "Usual Suspects")
