All the more reason to be even more excited now. No reason to give up on FC!

Didn't some of us pay for this one once already and end up getting burned?

No. There has never been a kickstarter for this.

Is this that game that has been in development for a decade with nothing but a few dozen screenshots and neat ideas floating around to show for all the time?

Game always sounded interesting. However, sounds like putting glitter on vaporware.

It was in development back in 2003. Then they couldn't get funding they had to drop development for a while. They are back now with a streamlined design so they can get it out without having to get large investors.

So are they starting over or just trying to work with what they had?

Seems to me like indie MMOs don't age well in general and going back to what they had from a decade ago wouldn't be a great idea.

The design was overhauled a bit, so it was kind of starting over. Not sure about the graphics engine but the SS looked different from back then so I think they upgraded that as well.

So far all we have are details about the game and screenshots and a single video. That's what we have to go on. However, the thing to pay attention to are the actual features of the game. Look at what the game developers are offering you and see if they deliver on what they are promising. This kickstarter is going to be that deciding factor for many, if not all of us. But we are pretty confident in Forged Chaos and believe they will which is why we are very excited.

A little of both. Their orignal attempt to make the game they admitted was way over their heads. Kinda like sprinting before you can crawl. So they decided to stop everything and reevaluate what they were really shooting for. Since their return, they kept a lot of the same features/concepts but are holding it off a lot of them until after launch, when the game becomes more successful. For right now they wanted to make sure they didn't bite off more than they can chew while still delivering an incredible game and many of its great features.

I have yet to see just about any other MMO with this much freedom (besides EVE)

My favorite is no stupid NPC fetch quests.  Everything you do is for yourself (which could mean helping other people for gold)  Also you don't even have to be a warrior, you could create a business as a crafter or gatherer (mining, logging, fishing, farming) if you want.

Yep! How organic this game will be is what will make it a great economy. There won't be NPC's sitting around with an infinite amount of gold being pumped into the economy. You are doing ACTUAL tasks (contracts) for other players who need things done. So when you complete those tasks, your reward is coming from another player and your task helps another player get something done. It's awesome and I can't wait for this game to launch!

Since no one has directly spoken to your question about the actual build, yes they've been building the game from scratch in HeroEngine since relaunch.  No, they are not using their homebrew engine from 2005 or whenever it was.
