-High quality textures on both the world and the characters (players AND npcs)
-Less Quest hub A to B to C grindfest and more dynamic questing.
-Reduce the amount of mobs per area and spread them out more. Mobs that have no purpose in the game other than for completing nonsense kill 10 rats should not be in massive amounts in the game. The maps dont look more alive or populated with them, the maps just look awful filled with braindead target practice mobs.
-Overhaul the male dwarf models..... worst dwarf model ive seen in my gaming life. Its more like something weird born from a monkey and not a dwarf.
I also wish they would do something make their engine a little better. I have a pretty decent computer that runs games like TERA and Skyrim all in high settings, yet RIFT I have to play in lowest settings or I lag very badly. Hopefully this remedies itself when I get my new gaming computer.

I was reading their PTS forums and apparently they're working on some optimization fixes. They're asking people to come in and try them now. This go round has more to do with spells and ground effects, though, if I'm not mistaken.

I think the foliage is what my computer doesn't like so that doesn't help me as much I'm afraid.
1st and foremost they need to remove cross faction matchmaking in pve and pvp, then they should remove cross faction chat and guild system. this cross faction break the lore so badly in so many level, i got completely disheartened by all the guardian crap i had to go through. it is immersion breaking.
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

I can't play for free. Apparently forgetting the password to my account means I have to remember things that are even harder to remember than the password, some of which are impossible for me to have. So I won't be playing this I don't think, even if I did get a sudden urge to play.
Contact support. I have dealt with them pre-online chat only (via phone) and after just recently and they are level headed and understand. i needed help with secret word for an account I made for my wife 2 years ago that my son was using since I knew the email associated, but needed help with the rest and it took all of five minutes.
None of those are even close to what I feel needs to be done to bring me back, or many others. Updates are great, expansions are great and less grind is great BUT....
What has stopped me from staying in the game longer than 6 months is the core gameplay and lore. The lore is bland and not delivered well. The gameplay is not all that exciting... lots of shinies and sparkles, but just doesn't feel all that great with the combat and animations. The world and graphics are great, water interaction is horrible, with underwater being an after thought, me thinks. The biggest killer for me was when they did away with the faction division. They did this because the population was so low it was the only way you could get much done in the game, but after they merged even guilds it became a game I no longer wished to play. For me the top thing they need to fix is the faction division. MAYBE even add a 3rd faction and make the gameplay and combat more interesting.
First off I believe that the less of a grind in storm legion would be great, however it still isn't TOO bad. ESPECIALLY compared to most MMORPG's out there. To be honest, even if it is a grind, the quickness of leveling from 1-50 kinda makes up for it.. If you follow the storyline quests you actually get there are a reasonable speed.
In terms of different PvP options, with the new 5v5, and the games they have still it has a pretty good selection. However adding another game option would be awesome.
A LOT of things people said I agree with. New races, (Out of the 6 races, 4 are VERY similar with the two humans and two elves) new start zones would be great,
IMO the ONE thing the article is ABSOLUTELY correct about is the lack of exposure. Rift is an AMAZING MMORPG. Especially for those that wanna play an MMO yet dont wanna play WoW or START WoW because of it's subscription.
This is the first of millions of articles about Rift on this page to which i actually agree. I'm also totally buffled to read a piece about Rift that raises some concerns and does not only constist of the usual praise and hype about a Trion title.
I doubt that any of what's pointed out in the article will hit the game in 2014. Trion had this "aggressive" (which i find is a totally ridiculous term to use in this context) updates and it still wasn't enough. Despite the quantity of stuff Trion threw at the players, the game kept missing the "it" for many and hence went from a sub game to F2P to dead.
Several rounds of lay offs, the EoN and Defiance desaster, closing of a studio, server merges over and over, performance still crap (and they'll NEVER gonna fix it, they just dont have what it takes) ....Rift paying the bills for EVERYTHING until it went F2P...and now lockboxes are supposed to pay for everything = Trion isn't the same company anymore.
They couldn't lift Rift up to it's huge potential when the grass was still green, they are never going to do it in the state the company is in now. Just look at them clinging to crap as Trove, which's simple concept they even had to steal big time as their next blockbuster, pathetic. At this rate they will produce browser games in 2015.
Rift could have been it, too bad that Trion just wasn't able to. Their PR just fooled everyone.
I lost my faith in TRION when they announced the 1-year subscription pack, sold it to everybody along with the expansion and the constant speech that they're not going f2p only to, few time after the expansion, they announcing they were going f2p. I know, it's only business, but it doesn't change that fact that they lost an entire guild with that dirty move.
I agree with your list, Chris, but I'd tone down the fear.
Shards are busy and Trion is rolling out new content regularly. Update 2.6 is scheduled for February and will have lots of new things including a completely new crafting profession, 15 new dimensions and stat buff items. Previous updates have brought out new chronicles, annual events with new items and itemization, old instances retuned for the level cap and a new water saga leading into the coming expansion.
I'd agree the faction grind is pretty tough in Storm Legion. But many of the grinds were alleviated with extra bonuses from crafting dailies. And the gear upgrades at the completion of the grind are pretty awesome.
I'm having fun in Rift and have gotten back to raiding (now probably too much at 3x per week). Raiding has taken precious time away from my favorite pastime - building Dimensions. So while I agree that Rift can always use positive PR shining a light on all the great things about the game, I'm feeling pretty good about how things are right now. Especially since the F2P conversion went extremely well and Rift's model is widely seen as the preferred F2p hybrid model around.
It is suggestions like updating the characters that really makes the MMO community suck. You are not gaining anything by updating the character graphics. Are you going to sit around and look at your character for hours?
There are enough dungeons, enough raids.
What Rift needs are new forms of activity.

They did the same thing for me. I don't even remember setting security questions in the very beginning but they were able to help me. This was over a year ago, though.

I agree with you that some new animations would be welcome but they don't really bother me personally. What I have to disagree on is that the removal of faction barriers was a forced move due to low population. I was very active at that point and while a lot of people had left and were commenting on MMO sites about how "dead" it was, the actual servers were very active with a lot going on, even during off hours. I shouldn't say all -- I played on Faeblight and there was far from a problem. I interpreted that change as an accessibility move to let friends play together without needing to re-level.
So the article wants Rift to go back to the quick theme park ride to max.. JUST so you can do the dungeon/raid hamster wheel grind forever for better gear? Been there, done that and will never play that way again.. Why buy a game where 90% of it obsolete once you hit max level? That is just crazy in my opinion..

I would favorite your comment if I could. My intention isn't to fear monger by any means. RIFT had a kind of fall from grace and I would love to see it climb back up to its rightful pace, is all.

I see find it being the opposite. If you go to other sites such as MMOhuts there hardly is any hype on Rift. Most hype for any f2p is for overrated games like Tera simply because the combat is different. (Great but different) I see people talking about how great Rift, but most of the time (Even IN GAME) you hear people CONSTANTLY comparing it to WoW, which makes everyone think of it as a watered down WoW. A lot of sites or youtube pages that have their "Top 10 f2p mmorpgs" tend to ignore Rift.
I want a new CONQUEST area. Twist it up a little. Lag is horrible, but it's still fun.
I wasn't there for the days of subs, but I know they are making a mint on how they have things now. Sub or no sub means jack.
They need to do better on customer service. They do treat non-subs substandard, but when u start spending in the cash shop to support the game, then they need to change that attitude.
DON'T make it so you lvl to end game in a flash. OMG! Didn't we hear enough of that grip with WOW. Vote to /gkick Chris if he ever says such a stupid thing again. Let's get to end game so we can grind the same S##T every day for months. Rep/gear grind anybody. Exploration, lore, and pvp should make the game. NOT end game content.
Rift does have a perception problem - Rift's supporters tend to think its this amazing game that is unfairly underplayed/underrated. Of course this applies to every game's supporters (Vanguard is another obvious example).
Rift has its loyal fans but they need to accept that most people don't like Rift, or don't find it more than a month or two diversion. Its a shallow world, with shallow combat despite all its choice, and poor immersion.
That doesn't mean its a bad game, its just one with limited appeal.
I think the time on this type of game has passed. I liked RIFT at release, I played for 10 months. That being said, I bought the SL expansion, logged in once, and played for about 8 minutes. I never logged in again. Same old same all over again. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of it, but I just couldn't stomach it.
I asked for a refund 2 weeks later, and to my surprise, they wouldn't give me one. I thought for sure Trion would look out for one of there founding players. Needless to say, I have not felt the same about Trion since.
I agree with all points but second. It's leveling of vanilla Rift that needed fixing - to make it longer. Currently it is as it should be. I also don't agree that it's not a problem with content. Quests are still dominated by bring this, use something else, kill that twenty times.
Also from my perspective there is another must do: bring OS X client;-)
