I have a dual boot system with WinXP on one hard drive and Fedora Core 3 on the other. I highly recommend Fedora Core, as it's a solid OS (from the people who made Red Hat) and it's IMO the most user-friendly of all of them.

What I read told me that Knoppix was the most LinuxIdiot friendly and they had a bootable cd that I could try it out with. Its fairly overwhelming to say the least. I absolutely LOVE the look thus far, and am very excited about customizing it even further. However, I am struggling to get things done. I am fairly competent when it comes to WinXP , I can fix most problems on my own. But now with Linux, I can't even seem to find the music files on my hard drive to play in xine. At the moment I am simply running it off of the cd, but I am strongly considering fully moving to Linux , perhaps Just putting it on one hard dirve ( I have 2) but I have no clue how that might work. I have a 40 gig HD with XP on it and not much else, and then I have a 2nd HD that is 160gig partitioned into 2 80gig drives , one for music and movies, the other for progs, games, etrc. So I could Pull it all off do a repartition into say 3 drives and put my Linux on the new 3rd drive, but again that is unfamiliar to me. Thoughts? Please feel free to share.

I use SuSE Linux 9.1 on my alt machine for running a cs:s server and such. I hear it is the most user-friendly of them all and the most polished. I also used RedHat linux before and it is pretty decent, but a little less easy to start using.
As I understand it, and correct me if I am wrong, but Knoppix is kde. I like kde's layout. From screens that I have seen what I eventually want to be on the desktop is as follows: ~Transparent background for the Common Prog buttons. ~Weekly weather ~System performance specs with transparent background ~Small montly calendar ~And then I will be customizing color to match the background photo which I havent chosen yet
How I am hoping to set things up. I have two hds one is a 40 gig, single partition, which currently has WinXP and not much else. The second is a 160gig partitioned into two 80gig drives one with music and movies, and the other with all of my progs and games etc on it. I want to move all of my progs and etc onto the drive with music and movies, and then install Linux (whichever distro I may go with) onto that drive. What I am curious abotu is how that will actually function. Every time i boot up my computer will it ask me which OS I want to use, or is do I have to do that some other way. How can I tell what will be usable on Linux from what I already have or will i need to redownload all of my games and etc in their linux form if I want to use them while on the linux OS, and I am assuming that my mp3 and wav and other music files as well as movies will still be playable? I may be assuming too much there. I have, as of yet, been unable to locate my my music files while using linux. Xine is the media prog I am using and when I go Open --> File --> and then it takes me to this menu with all these unfamiliar folder names, I can't seem to figure out how to open the drive that my files are on. It has been mounted, but in read only form. O am still very new, so my plan atm is to play around with this knoppix for about another week, try and get the feel for things, and then do all of that. Alot of ppl, on irc servers, have been telling me "get to know yoru command line" and "explore your K menu" yea ok but I have no clue wth I am looking at so I can stare at it all day and click on things but if I dont know what it is or what its supposed to do that isnt helping me much. I will most likely go get some "Linux for uber Morons" book (yes I capitalized the M cause its important) and read through that. Impatience is a virtue they say, I think.... but if any of you could offer some help in the mean time it would be greatly appreciated. Damn do I wish this thing had a spell checker, I apologize for all of the spelling mistake contained herein. Thanks for reading.

I think that the best version for you would be a Mandrake

I used to use Lindows for my gaming laptop before I broke down and finally bought XP PRO for my baby.

I would say, consider trying SuSE.
