I've been crafting and enjoying it. I notice that when it comes to improving an item, the mats seem to be hard to come by (at least ones you actually want).
I've put skill points into the available crafting upgrades - but I don't seem to have much luck finding the improvement mats in any real quantity. I horde the items for greens and blues for both Clothing and Woodworking.
Is the drop rate ok with you guys?
How about the success rate of the items as applied. I seem to fail more than the percentage would indicate (outside of the 100% chances)

the drop rates are terrible but i agree with the upgrade chances....
I've failed 3/6 times with a 90% rate.
You can do fine with crafting basic whites to fill in your gear and getting quest rewards. The crafting perk that gives you better items from deconstructing gear helps a ton too; and it's nice to be able to unlock set items (which implies that you should use the upgrades.) Deconstructing a lot of drops seems to give me plenty of diamonds, etc.
So my recommendation it to restrict the improvements to usage with set items and to focus crafting on basic armor / weapons and consumable (potions, food, drink) that are useful throughout the leveling process. The multiple layers for crafting can then come into their own once you're ready to make end game gear with a longer shelf life.
