Yeah I gotta agree with you lol.  I mean, I like ESO and all...but I have to wonder, do some of the folks here even remember what EQ1 was like????

As I remember EQ1 you generally would try to find a group and then camp a spawn.  Quests did not make up a large part of the gameplay experience like they do in post WoW MMORPGs.  EQ1 was basically an entirely PvE game too...I mean, you could try PvP, but I wouldn't recommend it lol.

ESO is like ALL questing in PvE, and mostly solo.  It has WoW style dungeons, and an open PvP area.

    So to sum up....

EQ1 = camping spawns, focus on grouping, nearly all PvE, not many quests.

ESO = most PvE is solo questing, WoW style dungeons for grouping, large PvP area.

How are these two remotely similar???

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I will say that ESO is a lot of fun , but sorry to have to disagree , its nowhere near the experience EQ 1 was and still is for a lot of people. For me nothing has ever really matched the immersion the fun the depth and even the tension of playing EQ , only maybe SWG Pre Nge came close.

But for sure ESO is a great game in its own right, I don't think its destined to be a classic though.

Sorry but I am not sure we played the same EQ :P

I played EQ from the start and it is still #1 in my book, this game, to me, falls short of that in every area.

In EQ exploration was unlimited, to the point where if you ran far enough, or hard enough, you would end up in untextured area that weren't even meant to be explored.  ESO I just feel like someone left the fog machine on, blocking my path at every turn.

IMO the game really isn't that in depth, most of the NPC's have no personality, and just give the same quests over and over, go here, help these people, then from there they tell you to go to the next spot and help those people, then they tell you, well, go kill the source of the problem.....EQ even with its lack of voice acting, each NPC had its own personality as you typed their key phrases to talk to them and get your quest.

Combat.....well.....combat in ESO is more active thats for sure....but thats more of a tech thing, of course the combat is an upgrade, EQ1 is 15 years old :P

Not saying ESO is bad, it's just not EQ1 status :P

    No, just no.

Not even with the caveat "sort of like".

    Not even close.

As someone who played the original EQ for years and currently plays P99, I have no idea how it's possible that you can make any connection whatsoever between ESO and EQ1.  EQ1 was a sandbox based around community, exploration, and phat lewt.  ESO is a themepark based around questing that you could play solo the entire way through if you wanted to.  They're nothing alike.

I agree. ESO is an "easy" mmo compared to EQ1. Plus it is different. ESO:Tons of quests, quest indicators, click to swing your weapon instead of auto-attack.

No risk/reward.  If you die, oh boo hoo you have to pay to repair your armor...or, just ressurect on the spot you died.  No "camping", except dungeon bosses, which is dumb.  The "boss" dies in 3 seconds.

No - Fast travel/horses.  EQ1 was awesome because you had to interact with players to travel.  Everything wasn't just spoon fed instant gratification.  You had to work for your levels.

Not really like EQ at all.

But that isn't to say that ESO isn't an OK mmo to play, but it is far from EQ1.

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

Having been playing ESO since 5 day head start, I keep finding myself getting more of those EQ feels than I have ever gotten in any MMO since.

I think the combination of the slow leveling, the exploration and the fact that you never know what you are going to run into and what kinds of adventures you will find just down that path ahead, the lack of auction house so people have to rely on trade networks and each other for weapons and gear, the limited skills bar, and the group / co-operation play that I have experienced where people get together to overcome something that is just too difficult to do solo and must be done as a group or community.

Obviously it is not as hardcore as EQ1. There are no corpse runs, leveling is not AS difficult, there is no xp loss on dying, and it is much more solo friendly. That being said, I think ESO is a great balance between what made EQ such a special game, and the modern expectation of what people want in an MMO.

I think Zenimax did a great job in combining all of these elements to make a really special game. I don't think it will ever have the appeal or numbers of WOW because it is not as casual and cute, but I think this is one of those games that will survive just fine with a subscription model because of its uniqueness and quality.

I have a hard time believing you ever played EQ1 seriously if you think this game compares in any way, shape, or form.

I played EQ for several years and EQ2 for several more this game is better then both what can I say we both have our opinions.

While I get the point you are trying to make, mechanically TESO is different than EQ in every way so it's definitely not a "spiritual successor".  I really doubt they even thought about Everquest when they were developing TESO.

So basically you are saying....take out everything  that made EQ special and exciting to play and you got ESO? What's next...claiming Hello Kitty Online is the spiritual successor to SWG?

    It's true!

EQ was buggy as shit when it came out, NOW U C DA PARELLELSSS!!!!!!!

    /Sarcasm off

EQ was a ground breaking MMO that modern players would hate today as being overly grindy and far too non solo friendly

ESO is an average themepark MMO with an interesting PvP that doesn't work too well...like the rest of the game.

I fail to see how their similar.

I'm off the opinion that most of the people starting threads on these forums about ESO, are just simply trolling or trying to gain peer acceptance for throwing their money at something rather average...

Sorry but someone had to say it....

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!

Well if your going to put it that way, ESO has just as strong a claim to being the spiritual successor of Hello Kitty Online as it does for EQ1, if not more image

    This.

In my week of ESO, similarities to EQ never once crossed my mind.  In fact, as a hardcore classic EQ fan, I'm insulted by the comparison.

    to OP ...lol no....just no..

not even  remotely close to hey-day of eq...comments like these make me think some people didnt even play the games they claimed to ever played ALOT of people dont realize there are 2 versions on eq1 now..the 1st one was the ever loveing greatness of what a AAA mmorpg should play n feel like back in those days..and 2nd version is a dumb down version "lets cater to the wow masses" and make everything easy version...so when some people say they used to play eq1 i take it with a grain of salt...cuz they either dont know what went on truely in-game or they are just too young to even exp. the early years of a great mmorpg and place bogus claims n comparisons

This is the worst and most incorrect post / statement I have ever read in my entire life. ESO is nothing like EQ1 and should not even occupy the same sentence as such. Mayong Mistmoore is rolling over in her grave at the thought.

TESO is only like Everquest in the fact it's an MMO and Fantasy, personally EQ is better.

Please do not sully the memory of a great game which I played from 1999. ESO is nothing like Everquest except for having been in the same genre. Everquest is miles ahead.

I played EQ for 8 years.

    ESO is nothing like EQ.

ESO is nerf any XP giving outside of questing so players will not miss their precious quest story.

    Polar opposites.

That being said.....ESO probably has a better story then some of the other quest based MMOs (Rift, Lotro, SWTOR, GW2)

    Palazious <The Vindicators> Darkfall
    Palazious r40, rr45 SW War
    Palazious 50 Pirate PoTBS
    Palazious 35 Sorcerer Vanguard
    Palazious 75 wizard EQ
    Paladori 50 Champion LOTRO
    Poppa Reaver bugged at rank15

    Amen.

The only resemblance between this and EQ1 is that it's an MMORPG... sort of... almost...

This game ain't even close to EQ1.

Why don't you fanboi's give it a rest?  Who are you trying to convince?  Yourselves?

  • ohioastroohioastro Member UncommonPosts: 534

I don't think the issue is EQ at all (and I'd wager that, since I stopped playing EQ1 5 years ago, my memories of that game are much more recent than those of most posters.)  People have fond memories of games that made an impression on them, and for some reason comparing something new, especially something that they don't like, to those lovely and hazy memories can provoke fury.

As a 16 year EQ1 Beta vet, to me ESO is the best MMO since EQ1 for me, and I have played them all.

Strictly my opinion of course, and I am not comparing the two at all.

i played EQ for a long time too but explain to me how it was miles ahead of ESO? because you personally enjoyed it more?

classic EQ was about mob grinding and community, that's about it. there wasn't much else to it but it was special to a lot of people.

community wise it was miles ahead, that's about all you can truthfully say. i enjoyed classic EQ more than ESO too but was EQ miles ahead of ESO, no. not even close.

  • DullahanDullahan Member EpicPosts: 4,536

What makes the games polar opposite is the fact that EQ required people to do just about everything, where ESO requires no one to do anything other than battlegrounds, which lets be honest, arent that amazing.  Even in the pvp respect, EQ had open world non instanced on its pvp servers.

I guess if the game gives you that sense of wonder like EQ, thats cool, but it doesn't make them alike.

  • svannsvann Member RarePosts: 2,230
After playing eq1 on and off for years and then for the last 6 months I have to say that the eq of today feels 2d compared to eso.  I agree that ESO has the feel of the starting days of EQ.  Not exactly the same though.  More theme parky, but stil with the feeling of a huge world and unlimited possibilities.
  • GrummusGrummus Member UncommonPosts: 152

There's something seriously wrong with you if you think ESO is in anyway comparable to release-PoP era EQ1. I'm not even trolling or being an ass here, I'm serious. The only sane explanation for someone seeing this game in such a way is a very severe mental deficiency at play, one dangerous enough that it's altering their perceptions of the world around them at a fundamental level. Drug or injury induced brain damage? Tumor? You really should look into a trip to the doctor's office, at least for a CT or MRI scan.
