scroll down to the "l" section and you will see .. yes, you guess it .. "league of legends".

Click on the link for it, and the information for it, and the first thing listed is MOBA.

Why does that mean it's not considered an mmo ?

No one is saying moba isn't a game type, they're saying mmo is a larger classification of games that also encompass mobas.

I guess the easier way to do it would be to call them mmoba ( like mmorpg ) but really it doesn't matter.

There are many people that call MMORPGs "MMOs" for short because orally, "MMORPG" is a little over the top. "MMO" isn't necessarily the umbrella term that some folks want it to be so desperately. Some FPS/TPS/RTS/MOBAs etc. do indeed have borrowed features and mechanics from MMORPGs, but that doesn't make them the same. MMORPGs have borrowed features and mechanics from other genres as well, but we don't refer to TERA, for example, as an FPS.

Also, don't get confused by the marketing; it happens all the time. Take the Automobile industry for instance. Cars are marketed as Sport Cars that aren't true Sport Cars all the time. It helps to sell more cars. Enthusiasts (and the industry) know better but the average guy is clueless/doesn't give a crap.

Hell, not too long ago Bill Murphy created a thread announcing that mmorpg.com was going to address this very issue with some big changes to the site's stance and how it handles the Games List.

There's a reason why Librarians don't just throw all the books into a pile in the centre of a Library. That would be idiotic.

The first M stands for Massively, not Massive.

Also, the reason why this is a problem is because if every game that offers an online component would be called an MMO then almost every multiplayer game would be an MMO and the category would lose it's meaning and hence be pointless. There would be no distinction between a multiplayer game and a massively multiplayer game. So why even then have the latter?

It is simply a marketing ploy. They want to pretend it is an MMO to get more sales. It is like calling a regular car a luxury car, even if it isn't.

    Ha.

No but they do have fiction non-fiction sections that also have sub sections like horror, sci-fi etc...kind of like mmos do.

Says who ? The industry seems to have decided they were a long time ago.

And why would we give a FUCK what the 'industry' says what they are?

LOL is not persistent and does not contain more than 10 players on the same map. How that can be categorized as MMO is beyond any common sense.

Because if a lot of people are using their definition, it would be convenient to do so.

Yes, LoL is not persistent and does not conttain more than 10 players on the same map. So is WoT. Since they are classified as MMOs, MMOs no longer need persistent worlds, nor more than 10 players on the same map.

Common usage trumps common sense .. obviously.

Doesn't matter how they label their games.  If the general MMO player base disagrees, then they set the trend, not the developer.  No matter how you or anyone else tries to twist terms, it won't matter diddly squat if no one listens or follows.

Who is disagreeing aside from a few people here? .. and this site clearly is not representative of the "general MMO player base".

If you have evidence of "the generall mmo player base disagree" .. (for example, a scientifically conducted survey with a big enough sample), please share.

Lol , anyways despite Mobas now being considered MMOs , which is entirely false and wrong, it isn't any suprise that candy crush saga and farmville 2 are up there, I'm just suprised that angry birds has fallen off in popularity =p.

*giggleS* Although, I personally still prefer the original farmville, even if it is a major time sink and all my crops are perma withered on it.

Yeah, that list is pretty much a fail. They didn't even bother finding out what an MMO was.
Why should they bother? It is more convenient, and it is not like most players care.

It's more confusing and thus less convenient. Plenty of people seem to care since they're constantly creating posts and threads on how annoying it is when someone considers non-MMO games MMOs.

Seems to me MMO = game that need to be played over the internet where lots of people can be playing or joining a game with out

While non MMO = have a lan option in the game and doesnt have to be played over the internet. Thats what ive been noticing recently.

But you can argue that there are tens of thousands if not hundreds logged into the game at any given time. So then how important is it for the title MMO that all these online players be able to interact with each other in the same world?

While Kyleran is using a touch of hyperbole to add a bit of humor to the thread, I don't think he's too far off. Sooner or later someone's gonna say, "I saw them selling it on Ebay, therefore the game is "online".

(And yes, that too is hyperbole...........or is it?)

    Edit:

Of course there is also something to be said about WoW evolving into a Massively Single Player Online Game that you can wave hello to Massive number of other players playing thier Massively Single Player Online Game at the same time.

So, why not? Let's lump them all together then. What does it matter anyway? Since hardly 2 players in the MMORPG genre can agree on what kind of game it should be in the 1st place.

Hmm does have a good point, whats the difference between WOW, LoL and all that, WoW is basicly a chatroom with 5man-25 man instances. While LoL lobby is a chat area and has 1-10 man games. pretty much the same thing to be honost when you think about it as that.

he he he .. people here certainly do seem to care (or they just like forum pvp).

But i don't see a outcry when WoT is reviewed as a MMO everywhere. This place is not representative.

    they miss massive multiplayer.

they are massive and have multiplayer but don't have massive multiplayer.

Simple, to the point, and sums it all up.

There is certainly a difference, marketing nonsense or not.

For years MMORPG's have been RPG's with persistent worlds, always online, and large player bases on the same server.   When I saw the label I know exactly what kind of game I am expecting.  It was a very specific gaming experience I am expecting.  No explanations needed.

What clearly defined Planetside as a MMOFPS vs. a regular FPS was the persistent world with large amounts of people playing on it at the same time.   MMOX have always been defined by persistent worlds with large amounts of people at the same time.   If you look games converted into MMOX this has always been the case from Neverwinter 1 to Minecraft to Just Cause 2.

If a website dedicated to NFL Football video games started to call all sports games NFL football because Madden has a monopoly on NFL Football people would call it dumb as well.  Essentially your trying to make NFL Football which is pretty specific into generic term for all sports because you need advertisement revenue.  This is what has happened with MMOX term but mostly with fantasy games.  You'll see matched based fantasy games called MMOX over military like Call of Duty.  Simply because demographics overlap that MMORPG players also play MOBA's.

The original article says this breakdown is of "The digital games market"

So Candy Crush, LoL and others are not MMOs. They deserve their own name, LoL is a MOBA, I have not got a clue what you would call Candy Crush.

The real problem comes when we get these compilation sites telling us that F2P transactions in MMOs are making more money than blah blah. They may well be counting Candy Crush as a MMO and therefore distorting the data.

Which is then used by posters on here to make statements like "WoW will be F2P within 2 years". They are not sending this data to professionals in the industry marked 'private and confidential'.

They put their conclusions on websites without saying what companies the data comes from, leaving that data open to wild speculation.

Why is that the real problem ? why does it matter what anyone says about anything here ? Or is the real problem you just don't like what those numbers say and wish people would stop saying it.

You are not reading the table carefully.

It clearly broke down the "digital games market" into MMO, social games, and so on.

It also clearly categorize LoL as MMO, and candy crush as "social".

If they want to categorize games like this, and report the data, i have no problem with it, as long as it is clear.

How can past data tell you what happen to wow in the future?

But statement such as "f2p is making a lot more money than sub-only in MMO" will be correct, in their definition of MMO.
