Come on in, the water is fine...

kruluxkrulux Member Posts: 229

Picture this:  A crowd of people on a beach, yelling to a crowd of people in the water....

"You can't have any fun in the water!"

"I don't like this beach, my old beach was much better!"

"Don't go in the water, the sharks will get you!"

"Don't go swimming there, you won't have any fun!"

"It's too cold to have fun in the water, you'll freeze!"

A good number of folks on the beach have their trunks on, but yet they don't seem to like swimming.  The folks on the beach can't seem to understand how anyone could enjoy swimming here.  Some folks hear the yelling and indeed are getting out... But yet there are plenty, and I mean plenty, of folks still in the water and don't seem to hear all the yelling.

This is Elder Scrolls Online.

Like many of you... I've played a lot of MMO's over the years, my first being in 1999.  I've seen and done just about everything that can be done in a MMO.  Does ESO measure up to what I think it should be?  No, it does not.  Given time, could it grow to be better?  Yes, yes it could.  For those who care about MMO's, and care about ESO, we need to support it and give it time to grow... and some of us just need to take off the rose-colored glasses and learn to like again.

I won't try to say what is good or bad about the game. I feel it is good enough to stand on its own merit.  I like a good deal of what I've seen so far... but it does need some work.  I do feel they have a solid platform to build something good.

I realize that complaining about everything is in vogue these days.  But seriously, if you can't find online fun in a game like Elder Scrolls Online, then you may want to evaluate your position as a MMO'er.  Is the game perfect?  No, but what game is?  We've all got opinions and we may not like the same things.  That's fine I suppose...

I posted this thread for those that have their trunks on and are looking to go swimming - but are still standing the beach...

Come on in, the water is fine.

This analogy needed a much longer Beta period.

I think the people on the shore know they can't swim in ESO, I guess in the end they know it's not much fun.

Wrong! You can swim in ESO, just not any of that silly underwater kind.

why should i continue to support a poorly done game. whats the return investment? 6 months to a year of frustration and boredom for a CHANCE that the game might become fun. sorry they dumped enough money into the game to make 3-4 mmos but all they could accomplish is something thats is pretty much a bare bones mmo with multiple bugs and poorly designed systems to boot. how much more is it going to take......400mil...600....

sorry they can do what ff14 did and spend their own money to fix their game....then i may give it another shot.

I went in the water and swam around for a bit but as I wasn't any fun I got out and went to watch a movie.

Depends what you are looking for, after playing it for a month I feel there are better beaches out there.

Water is fine if you enjoy getting burned.

The water was amazing when i got in.  Then i swam out a bit where the "veterans" swim and realized the water was shallow and my feet touched the floor.

There are a ton of bugs in the pool, a bunch of kids pissed in it, and I think I saw DK take a dump in it too.

    analogies!
  • ArakaziArakazi Member UncommonPosts: 911
One of the best analogies I've come across in describing the Elder Scrolls game is that "it is like looking at a vast lake, it stretches out for miles and miles, full of promises and hope. But once you step into it, you realize it's about a deep as a puddle."

I think he accepted the reality you made up the numbers.

Fairly certain the retention rate of new subscription MMO's is around 50% if not worse, so he's not that far off.

Yes...because swimming underwater would ruin the immersion. Who in their right mind would attempt to swim underwater?

Sorry to derail slightly, but I could have sworn your avatar and sig said "Bald Spot Man".  Figured all those dudes were your toons, and they all have the baldness going on.  Then I went to your profile and saw it a little bigger, and felt kinda dumb.

    That's all, carry on.

Its okay OP, youre quit right.

Nevertheless, in my games water i can dive for trasures, have a breathing apparatus, can enjoy a whole ocean sized water :)

I can even have a submarine, a fisherboat, a harpooner, underwaterfarms, ... well, what those waters gonna give me.

You see, i have no reason to shipper in a different sea, do you ?

Wow - feel the love.   :)

I do have a question for nearly everyone that responded.  Are you secretly playing ESO and liking it... or do you continue to post here in the ESO forum as some form of misguided duty to those who might otherwise try the game?  How white-knight of you, if the latter is the case.

Or is the real game these days to troll forums and just whine about everything and everyone.. regardless of the game at topic?  I'm following several games in addition to ESO on MMORPG.com and other popular sites.  I know I see the same types of posts on every game I follow.  I see the same type of "review" articles trashing nearly everything these days.  It is a sad state when the very negative and vocal minority ruins otherwise decent games that have the potential to grow into something greater given the chance to grow.

I'm not in the gaming industry, but I do work for a company with a large online presence.  I see how much work goes into making something several hundred thousand users will experience.  I can only imagine the work that goes into making a full-on AAA MMO... and then to see so many trash it and toss it aside after a few days of "play".  I know I've played some stinkers in the past - but I have the decency not to trash it, I simply quit playing and moved on if I felt it was not for me.

I'll be glad when the "me me me" generation mentality has passed.  I sure do miss the good 'ole days when you said nothing if nothing good could be said.... /sigh  (and please don't spout nonsense about constructive criticism... most posts are just downright rude)

If you think posting 7000+ pages of negative comments works as to guiding how a game will be developed, please wake up and smell the rose-colored roses.  It does not work.  Tearing down a game, or the developers of the games only weakens the gaming community as a whole.  You are effectively cutting down trees to see the forest...

And finally, only by playing the game, spending money on the game can the game improve.  Vote with your wallet if your voice is not heard.  Otherwise how about moving on and let the ones that like a game enjoy it in peace.  Novel concept these days...

You can't come here and expect to talk about the Ocean. Most people here are just puddle jumpers. image

On topic though, I am still in the Ocean. It is like my vacations to Hawaii. Just relaxing and having fun.
