The game is a griefer's paradise.  That is what you can expect in chat from this sort.

Barrens chat is a phenomenon all to it's own... amazing, yet somehow scary that it exists nearly identically on each shard!

A Ph.D is waiting for the lucky candidate who can explain it!

the junk spoken in main chat is generally complete crap, the usual "wow was first mmo bollox".

But its not any different to most main cities in ANY mmo ive played.

I must admit , it did catch me out i thought for the cost of the alpha the players involved would be a more mature bunch on release i would expect some of the crap they come up with.

but i have an awesome hax to get rid of it, I sit in another chat channel and filter out everything that i dont want, and bingo all the "flamers" go away..

and 2nd poster how does the chat channels make any difference on griefing????

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

Just wait for the release then, normally the chat of a game in 1st or 2nd month is complete madness.

Then things normally get better while the players who are not really intersted in the game move to other victim.

A least is my experience with every release.

I've been playing mmo's for the past ten years and it's the worse general chat I've ever come across. I've probably added more people to my blocked list in this game than the total I've had to in all the other games I've played in those ten years. Racism, sexism, homophobism, swearing, outright nastyness, it's all there.

The problem seems to be caused by a lack of any kind of moderation of the chat channels. In most games these people would be stamped on from high and if ignoring warnings would be banned from the game. There seems to be an attitude from the low lifes that they can say what they like because of their free speech rights in a US based server. That may be correct in the US but  the laws in Europe do not allow any kind of hate speech. If Trion are intending to place their EU servers in Europe when the game goes to beta or live, they will rapidly come to the attention of the tabloid press who love this kind of scandal and that will inevitably lead to pressure to shut the game down and for individual users to be taken to court.

I'd have thought Trion would have made enough money out of all the $150 Archeum packs they've sold to pay for a few mods to patrol the game by now. I'm more than a bit puzzled why they have'nt.

Quazal to explain the second poster's point of view which I do not share btw  is that as the game will probably attract griefers as he put it, the chat will reflect the propensity for griefer speech again not something I agree with. He means this game is where griefers will have a paradise doing what they do best and since they are going to grief and need an upper hand they get into the alpha to scope out the game and to check out the places to exploit and therefore any game that attracts this type of player will also be populated with their philosophy and hate speech .

I think your expectations are too high. This is Trion, you know. A company that sells alpha access.

It takes one to know one.

Why do people care and/or complain about this chat? You can turn it off and never have to see it again. The internet is full of trolls and wannabe funny people. When you get 100-1000 of these people in the same chat - it's gonna get weird. Why this surprises anyone is beyond me. It's easily resolved.

I'm always amazed when I discover that there are people who play with the general channels open. I always close them - in all games - and have done so for years.

    This.

Also i always said to disable Faction chat as soon as you got your hands on the game :P Spread the word!

Really it's a useless chat and in no way represents the community.

Strange responses in the main, as I was merely observing that no-one had mentioned it before, whereas the game 'community' often gets a mention one way or the other.

Hey, each to their own, it amuses me reading the nonsense perfectly decent folk spew when they are anonymous.

Never. Chat is a huge part of the mmo feeling. In fact some of the games release in last years its the only mmo feature.....

But i know in wich conversation i want to be part of and those i want to ignore, i like diferente tabs with filters.

  • DeathmachinePTDeathmachinePT Member UncommonPosts: 119

No problem here, it's actually pretty good compared to others MMOs, you are also full with a bunch of channels and you easily modifying what chat to see.

I don't engage in global chatting just local when I group with someone or someone is near me, so plays no affect beyond a profanity filter there shouldn't be any moderation it's essential for a sandbox an adult game.

I hope they remove the alliance chat and only keep zone specific chats for release.

But it's easy to remove your self.

Right now it's used by a lot of children for spam and as a global Trade channel. I've never figured what was so fun about posting the same line over and over but apparently it's worth paying $150 to do for some.

I haven't seen a limit to ignore yet though :)

    Its very simple really.

Fans of the game are not going to advertise how toxic the in-game community is because it would scare others away from the game.

Especially the people that are chasing that "old school feel" of past MMOs where community mattered.

The worst chat in a game I have ever seen is Tera Online, I go there every now and then to see if I like to stay and play and the chat is as toxic as it gets. You see people talk about other games the what's wrong with tera and other games and it gets to offensive language but never seen a GM and that's the problem.

Played ffxi for 10 years and you would get jailed/banned for chat abuse, GM use to be very serious but ffxiv is nothing like that I even reported few players botting for 5 days straight and they did nothing at all the botter was flashing his level 10 chocobo after 5 days.

Point is NO ONE CARES all they care is have you customer pay thats it.

While I don't care personally, I do find it interesting that there is a pretty big cost to get into alpha and to hear that these types are already annoying the community kind of spits in the face of many peoples conceived notion that a games costs is what keeps out the riff raff and trollish types. I have lost count of how many times that a games payment model has been used as supported proof that costs are what keep these people out and it is something that is mostly found in F2P titles because there is no payment upon entry. While AA will be F2P, it isn't atm and I find it hilarious that the topic is already being approached.

I will be trying out AA when it releases and expect to have to put up with this type of community initially. The game looks interesting enough. Thank you OP for the heads up.
