Wurm is not difficult or complicated. It's utterly tedious.

Agreed. People tend to confuse both "tedious" and "complicated" with "difficult" and "fun".

There was a time when games required knowledge to master though, now every noob can find any information in 10 seconds on the Internet. It was nice when you actually had to communicate with the other players to get informations instead of clicking search on a specialized website.
Agreed. Let's also add "inconvenience" to the mix. Making a game inconvenient is not the same as making it challenging or fun.
EQ - Go play EQ now and you will feel like a noob for a year. There are so many systems and unwritten knowledge at this point it can be overwhelming.
lol, right on
I tried recently their progression server and still had a hard time adapting to the game after so many years, I guess once you get what you need figured out, the rest is a breeze, but still too much information can be overwhelming.

The only confusion there is yours.
For some people, complicated = fun. It's all a matter of personal taste.
On topic:
EVE-Online - not just because it has a laundry list of features and systems, but because the political landscape (and associated wars) are ever changing.
Uncharted Waters Online is easily the most complicated game I've ever played. It's probably the most complicated MMORPG ever made, but I can't state that definitively without having played all of the others.
A Tale in the Desert is probably the next most complicated. No others strike me as exceptionally complicated. If I had to pick a #3, maybe Vanguard. I'm not going to bother trying to get to five.

Some people have said that "complicated" isn't the same as "good". Well of course it's not. There can be complicated games that are good or complicated games that are bad. But that doesn't mean that we can't make a list of the top most complicated games ever. The Internet loves top 5 and top 10 lists of random things.
I don't think your idea of complicated matches my idea of complicated. Anyway here are my top five:
EvE
Chronicles of the Spellborn
Asheron's Call 2
Perpetuum
Wurm
Needlessly complicating a game can lead to frustration instead of enjoyment. I think a lot of posters are confusing complex with complicated. Because most of the mmorpgs they listed I did not find difficult to grasp.

I actually played this game last year cause I was looking for a complicated mmorpg I never played before and man it was. I saw it son steam and said, why the hell not. I got into the game for about a good 3 solid months and still didn't quite figure everything out that was needed.
Between mastering a ship. discovering land and relics and old school land combat, the game was definitely interesting, but what a hell of game, go here, drop this off here, go there and do this here. You were literally pulled in many directions, at least I was. I wish I would have stuck with this game, I did love the old school style of ship battles in the seas.
