This pricing point will exclude a ton of people and keep the servers from being any where near overwhelmed. I would imagine someone willing to fork over that sum to alpha test a game would actually be invested in said game more so than free or $5 access. If you do any reading on gaming and economics especially through blogs like Gamasutra this is a common knowledge, well established, perfectly sensible, business and development strategy.

So by that same logic if you can't afford a $1000 buy in you could not possibly be as dedicated as the individual with $1000 of literally disposable income. With that kind of thinking I guess its a wonder how games ever got made when testers were actually paid professionals.

It may be informative that free alpha invites handed out by those who paid the grand now outnumber the original alpha backers by about 6:1.

You're only looking at parts of my statement. The other reason for the $1000 being they don't want a billion people playing their alpha product. I also never said you could not possibly be as dedicated simply that if you're willing to spend $1000 on a product your more likely to be so. They want the $1000 to serve to gate off their product not to make mass profits. Also testers being paid professionals get games made because their being paid to be testers..... idk what that has to do with anything. Please actually read posts in the future before responding.

Not to mention they have given out quite a few alpha keys for free at this point......

Why shouldn't developers test the reach of what some people are willing to pay? No where in the EULA do they agree to be gamers' financial managers.

Some things, some causes, some ideas are worth much more than a thousand dollars. What exactly those things, causes and ideas might be will vary from one person to the next.
