So, I've been checking out the game during this free log-in week-end. I do not own any character (bought the game pre-relaunch) so I've started fresh. Things I loved:
...
Leveling first class is fun. Even second you will manage but after that it gets very repetitive. Quests are exhausted after first two classes then you are left with fates, leves, dungeons etc for leveling. And in my personal opinion questing was the most fun way to level.
They have tweaked the xp from dungeons etc but if you are asking 'if it gets better' just on your first class then i doubt you will get very far.
Also end game is WOW esque dungeon grind and if that is not your cup of tea then nope i don't think it will get better for you.
Will never understand that silly idea about quests. I'm altholic and will always play all possible alts. So with all possible alts between 7 and 18 ... i have run out of quests a 18 level. Abominable. And have never seen something worse then FATE's as replacement for QUALITY and FUN questing.
So, I've been checking out the game during this free log-in week-end. I do not own any character (bought the game pre-relaunch) so I've started fresh. Things I loved:
- the graphics are great (for what I like)
- I actually like the slowish tab target combat
- I like some of the systems such as the multi-class, hunts, duties, leves, the armor bags and many more
However, there are some things that I did not like:
- the map system seems complicated (at least in Limsa Lominsa)
- the constant running around talking to 15 people just to finish a quest
- the fact that every npc which you talk to has about 6-7 paragraphs of text which you have to click-click-click through (at some point I got bored of reading everything)
I'm currently level 16 in my first job (arcanist). My question for the people which spent more time in the game is, does it get better as I level up (or at the endgame) or it's gonna be still hours of running around with a few minutes of actually doing something? Help me decide if it's worth a sub for me or not, thank you
The game didn't really hook me until I got past 30 and had my first job unlocked. The game really opened up then, dungeons got more challenging, and I have more options for content that I have seen in any other game. The game from 1-30 really isn't the best in the genre, but after that, I haven't found a better themepark (so far).
The quests get better to, I find myself heavily engaged in the main story at the moment. Waiting till I get off work so I can level some more and see the next part of the story unfold
Pretty much this.
Great game. Perhaps the only one worth a sub on the market now, in my opinion. Though I'm more so a fan of the development team and how they've delivered on just about everything promised, as well as focusing on just about everything with patches and not just the raiding crowd. Heck, they even answered to the role players and people who enjoy immersion by implementing several new ways to sit in chairs, beds, idle animations (for realism) and many more features in addition to the massive amounts of content they add with each minor and major patch. System overhauls, new systems in general, etc. Features you only expect to see in an expansion with other games.
I didn't recommend this game after playing it for a few weeks back when it was released in terms of being worth a monthly fee. Though the work they put into it has really made it worth having two accounts for me. I'm actually excited just to learn about the new patch with Letters from the Producer and Live letters -- and up to 20,000 people usually are to, who tune into a Japanese livestream just at a glimpse of pictures and with no idea of what they're saying (between twitch, youtube, nico nico, fan streams trying to translate).
Honestly, the updates are top notch and add permanent features to the game that keep on getting you to log back in. There's so much to do now that I can't get anything done. I've even known some people to quit because there's simply too much to do and they can't decide what aspect to focus on... as pretty much everything requires a lot of hard work and time. But it's generally worth it in the end.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Hmm... I have about 12 level 50s across two accounts at the moment -- several Providers of the Realm and a Builder of the realm. Typically I get to around level 30 before I even reach the level 20 storyline quests. Though knowing the questing and systems inside and out (there's no hand-holding past a certain point), this is the reality for me. There are a lot of systems that help you level up -- Storyline (obviously), side quests, Daily roulette, dungeons, Exploration (sightseeing), Map discovery, The Hunting Log, Levequests, etc. Heck, my next level 50 is 46 at the moment, and I just beat Ifrit (a level 20 quest). Granted though I've been perusing Daily roulette / dungeons and completed all of the latter before really starting the storyline (he doesn't even have his grand company or chocobo).
Wondering if this is a comment based on when the game was released, as a lot of people seemed to have trouble with this back then. Though they implemented a lot to address it.

A lot of those are constant things, more than most MMOs I have played ARR gets off to a slow start though, the first 20 (some might even say 30) levels introduce you to concepts slowly, but once you get your first job, the game really starts to shine and as you approach and hit 50 you will appreciate the slow trickle of new features because it really shines with the variety of things to do.
If you enjoy the core mechanics, which it seems you do stick with it and it really is an enjoyable and epic experience, if you dont enjoy the core mechanics the varied end game might not appeal to you so much.
There is a lot of depth there for people who want it, with cross class skills and other things you can do, and the crafting is nice, but you dont "need" them unless you are going to push through the content. The grouping is nice atleast on my server, people are fun and above all the game gives you challenges without them being punishing, yes you will fail, but you will generally always understand why, its not the hardest mmo on the block till you get to extreme modes but it is a nice ramp up.
The journey to 50 is some what padded and at times a trudge, but at other times the story carries it well and the dungeons are really nice.
Thanks for your reply and thanks for everyone's reply (also the negative ones). The game seems like the best option for me (I could not stand Wildstar and ESO after beta-ing them for a while, and i'm kinda bored of wow, rift, swtor etc). It certainly has some nice old school scent with the multi-class system, the crafting, the "a little bit more complex" systems etc I definitely like the core game, my main issue was "will they just make me run around forever and ever just to create the illusion of content?" but it seems that's not the case.
I live in EU so I've chosen an EU server, Moogle (it was also the recommended server), did not read much about servers and population etc. as I was planning to only check the game out.

The fact that there isn't enough unique story based quest content to cover for all 8 base classes (not counting crafting / gathering classes and their quests) in the game on a single character without repeating them is "abominable"? How many MMOs have you played that have enough unique quests that if you played every class in the game on just a single character you would never run out? Im betting 0. Hell most games barely have enough quest content to get you maxed out with a single class.
BTW FATEs aren't a replacement for anything. It is an alternative. Just as doing Levequests, guildhests, or dungeons are alternatives. You can easily reach max level in every class without ever having to do a FATE.

First off I'll say that the map gets way better and less confusing the further you progress (as most things in games tend to do). Second, I wouldn't say FFXIV is a game you skip the quest dialogue if its for the main quest story. The main reason I love this game is that the story is fantastic and is on par with many of the single player FF games. To answer your question, no. The quests pretty much stay the same with a lot of text and then doing some action.
I think the way to get around questing if that isn't your thing (though I highly suggest you finish your main story through 50 regardless if you read it or not) is to do fates and leves as well as your hunting log.
The quests are mostly for story and lore so there is a ton of reading and if thats not your thing it may not be the game for you? I will say though that Primal fights, as well as Crystal Tower, and Coil of Bahamut are insanely fun and my favorite PvE content in any game! Also the new frontlines 24v24v24 PvP is awesome!
To each your own but this games huge focus is on story!

Actually it is. :-) Have been in at day 1. But left before day 30. At that time all I could do with my highest alt at lv. 18 was to do FATE's and very bad dungeons until I would vomit of all this. :-)
So essentially you are saying there is no problem doing same quests but with different alts as I think should be normal? There are many other things that disturb me a lot and love a lot, but I play for questing. And only at max level for dungeons and rest. I love to test and experiement various spells, etc. In virtually any game I have all possible alts .. but so far only in Wow 21 of them maxed out, 1 waiting, and nearly all maxed out in Swtor. THAT are kind of games I love.
Maybe then I will sub back at some time to start few alts from scratch in ARR, only for good memories about FF back from PS2. However, for a short will play WS, then have already subbed to Swtor, guess until Warlords are released :-), then half year for sure of them, ... But sooner or later will guess try.
A few weeks ago decided to buy the game and I must say that I don't regret it. For 20 euros I get a real nice game during 30 days and most probably I will resub because I like:
the graphics
combat system
diverse content
class system
I cant say much more because I just reached lvl 16, but from my experience from playing mmorpgs since 2000 (EQ) and from XI, this game has a really good quality-cost relation.
Well, whether this game gets better or worse is probably going to depend on where the player is at in terms of the whole MMO gaming life cycle. Generally, it gets better toward the middle of the total play time and near the end things just sort of drag on and get worse. No matter how much someone may enjoy the game, there's little fun in rerunning the same instances over and over or grinding out weapons and armor. Also, the end game of Final Fantasy XIV ARR heavily encourages focusing on a specific role and sticking with it, especially with how the game works with leveling up other classes and the forced death march end game encounters the genre is known for.
However, there are some things that I did not like:
- the constant running around talking to 15 people just to finish a quest
- the fact that every npc which you talk to has about 6-7 paragraphs of text which you have to click-click-click through (at some point I got bored of reading everything)
I'm checking out the free trial and these are my dislikes as well, primarily the bottom one. The dialogue window is also so small that it's hard to read. I haven't figured out how to make it larger either.
The kill "x" quests seem to be more obvious as well. I don't know if it's because there are more of them or they just don't make an attempt to disguise them as something as.
My gladiator looks so goofy at the moment... he currently has green "padded" armor with what looks like purple oven mitts and purple leggings. The starter outfit looked great compared to this. Now I'm embarrassed to show my face around town. Which brings me to my one question... do mobs drop gear at all? So far all I've seen are crafting components.
