This article, ugh/// It leaves out so many facts such as Destiny's population is spread out over 3 consoles, with separate servers, one for the Xbox 360, one for Xbox 1, and one for PS4. That is means about 1.05 million people for each console!
Sorry but for Bungie, the creators of Halo, I don't view that as very good. Not to mention as newer games come out people have been leaving, a lot because they've realized how bare bones Destiny truly is.
Also, yes, a lot of the numbers you see are representative of the heavy advertising pushed down the masses' throats. Sorry, but if you think differently, not sure what to say.
Even my two friends who play games I usually think are boring and generic were done with Destiny by the time they got to level 20. That is an extremely bad sign.
It's a sad state of affairs when "journalism" turns into blatant advertising. Reeks of desperation considering the facts that were left out of this article.
Originally posted by lugal High sales volume prior to launch does not prove that reviews are wrong or right. All it proves is that the advertising was effective. Game reviewers patting themselves on the back for this games success have serious ego issuses.
I like this review. The way it says "you got bullshitted, but it smells ok so it's good" is awesome. Can't wait to play this average game that was advertised as the next best thing since the wheel!
They probably spent all $500 million on marketing, which is why it sold so well... Development cost, you say? a few boxes of beer for the team, and we saw the final result

BTW:
My son has the Xbox 1 version and played the hell out of it the first 30 days, hasn't touched it since as he resubbed to WoW.
i had a blast the first two weeks. I cant touch the game anymore, been playing Persona 3 Fes and Diablo 3. Cant go back to a game with zero content other than a few reputation grind doing the same tasks over and over.
Honestly I've been having fun on it still, but I enjoy monotonous gear grinding. But I got almost fully geared on one of my characters in like 12 hours, at this point I just need to grind out materials to upgrade my gear, then I'm pretty much done since I will have completed everything other than PVP which gets repetitive to me after a while. It's a fun game, that needed more content drastically upon launch, it felt like it was half made, I hope they add more soon.
To often people want something to fail. Gives them some sort of rush to say 'I told you so' or a big fat 'haha'. I'm glad it's doing well. To bad I'm not really into shooters, otherwise I'd give it a go.
Sales of games mean absolutely nothing, aside from the fact that there are lots of gamer's with money to spend on every new game that comes out.Far too often for many reasons, gamer's buy games on a whim, one of the biggest reasons is media hype usually started by the developer.
How often do we see this very hype based on numbers and not actual game hype?Oh this game is great because it has big sales, umm means nothing at all.
I no longer buy console games, last one i purchased was that over hyped Skyrim,it started collecting dust the first week i bought it.I have learned to not listen to hype,i try to do as much homework and see as much video footage as i can before buying anymore games but consoles are just right off my radar.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I think Destiny was probably a success for the Developer/Publisher, it did after all generate a lot of sales, not as many as a regular single player game would have, but pretty respectable figures even so, in terms of whether it was a success for the people who bought the game, well that depends if they feel they got their moneys worth out of it, overall they probably do, but i think there is one thing that is very clear by now, is that very few of them are actually still playing the game, but that is also a success in a way, as it means that maintenance costs are going to be reduced, there is also the whole DLC thing going on, the publishers can farm out DLC packs or season passes etc, and have reasonable expectation that even lapsed players will buy them in the hope that it revitalises the game, thats a win! at least financially. And if the content has already been created for the game, they don't need to keep on quite so many development staff, so costs are also reduced there too, another win!
So yes, just because the reviewers and players think that the game is a bit naff doesn't mean it can't be an out and out financial success, and thats all that really matters right
I merely stated the obvious, people sometimes buy stuff that's not that good, and sometimes a lot of people do it.
The obvious, your error, is yet slipping you.
What is good or bad is not up to you, game reviewers or whoever to decide, it is people voting with their wallets making that judgement.
People do not buy "bad" stuff, they determine what is "good" or "bad"I was going to give another polite reply to this but I decided you don't deserve one. You're obviously a fanboi being deliberately obtuse and singleing me out for your weak arguments. I'm not saying anything different to dozens of other posts here.
Oh dear, we have a fanboi.
Let me make it simple for you. People buy stuff THAT TURNS OUT TO BE BAD, after they buy it. Even things that sell well can turn out to be bad, so negative reviews can still be valid. Have you never heard of scams? Have you never bought something and later thought "that was a waste of money"? Ever been to the cinema to see a film and come out thinking "that was crap"? Geez look at Star Wars Episode 1.
I am not making any comment on Destiny in particular but the fact that a negative review is not cancelled out by good sales numbers.
I'm also saying nothing different to half a dozen other posters here so why I was the lucky winner in your "I'm going to be a troll" lottery I have no idea. Get back under your bridge and don't come out until you grow a brain..
People do not buy "good" stuff. They buy stuff and determine if it's good afterwards.
Can we please skip that childish way of thinking and keep the discussion at least somewhat constructive and rational?
You said, and I quote "People do not buy "bad" stuff, they determine what is "good" or "bad"." How is that different from People do not buy "good" stuff? Are you admitting your own argument is childish?

Sure, it happened to me, and I do not visit cinemas any more. Altough I am not stupid enough to think that people do not have their own ways, different strokes for different folk. There are plenty of things I do not like but masses enjoy.
What is your point anyway? There will be always a portion of people regretting their spendings. That is pretty obvious so what?
Your point would be if you could somehow provide evidence that there is a significant number, larger than average that are dissatisfied with their purchase of given product. That is something you cannot do tho...

It is weird you do not see the difference, yet you argue it all in your previous post...
I am not into this "kind" of discussion so I guess I leave it there.
Lots of people went to see Iron Man or Captain America or Lord of the Rings. Did they go and see the film again? Mostly no. so were those films rubbish because they had no replay value?
Destiny is a b2p game. Sales not subscriptions will determine its success. And when it comes to DLC sales what matters is not whether people have been playing the game for the previous 90 days but did they have a good time when they played it? (And we mentally factor in cost as well). Hence people went to see the Avengers and The Two Towers. People are more likely to return to a restaurant if the meal they had previously was good etc. Repeat sales is about the fun factor.
And Bungie's figures suggest that people either had fun playing Destiny or they are all masochists. Marketing can help sell a game but it can't chain people to their keyboards.
And yes the average across 30 days is different to the average on day 30 but we have other data which indicates that the number must have been high throughout the month e.g. not all day 1 sales. Add in that retention isn't key and how odd it would have looked if Bungie had released a day 30 number.
I would also question the assumption that the sales are all down to marketing. Other games this year have had marketing campaigns as big if not bigger and have failed to achieve these sales numbers. And there were no reviews before launch.
I would also question the statement that the game didn't deliver what was promised given the scale of the beta. Those who played the beta had a very good idea of what Destiny was.
Miley Cyrus might sell millions of records but that doesn't mean her music is good.. It just means people are dumb.
Destiny deserves its score.. When you make a game that's 500 million dollars of course it's gonna have people flock to it because the game with that much behind it should be epic..

Total sales have nothing to do with quality, especially on the new consoles, which have such an absolute void of quality games that it's embarrassing.
Destiny is a mediocre game with an absolutely atrocious story, end of story.
I self identify as a monkey.

Console gamers buy a console as their main gaming system, meaning its to play both exclusives and multi-platform games.

Popular does not mean good. Hype and marketing have a lot more to do with sales numbers, and thats one side of the game they got right..
There are examples off all sorts of commodities that sell well that aren't actually that great and imo Destiny joins that pile
Lots of people went to see Iron Man or Captain America or Lord of the Rings. Did they go and see the film again? Mostly no. so were those films rubbish because they had no replay value?
