Is it still possible to install Star Trek Online from a DVD?

I know that Star Trek Online can be downloaded for free. But I'm wondering if it's still possible to install Star Trek Online from the DVD, or if the game has changed so much since its release that the DVD no longer works. I've read one post on the STO forums that suggests that the DVD may no longer work:

After trying everything listed in earlier posts to try to upgrade every driver on my PC, I thought I'd try to uninstall then re-install the game. Unfortunately, this was a big mistake, as my Collector's Edition DVD version of the game software was so out of date that the software would not update (I'm sure that this is due to the links to the update server were changed when PerfectWorld purchased Cryptic - You need to add a re-direct for folks trying to install from original software disks). As mentioned earlier, the ARC software also has been hosed since the launch of Delta Rising so I was totally out of luck.

Is the DVD now completely useless or is this just a random bug that this person experienced?

You can always add it to your coaster collection.

Pretty sure with the length of  time the game has been out and the amount of patches and content added not to mention the change of ownership,  that you will run into similar issues as that other person.   Its one of the reasons DVD's are fading into oblivion as we speak.

I am assuming you were simply hoping to avoid some download time but I think that you might just end up wasting time if you try to use it.

I don't think there is any harm in trying I suppose.

No you cant in the UK anyways.Crptic was taken over by another company and because they reverted to f2p its a totally different client has far as I know. There should be no probs installing it from the site.Unless its the arc installer you are bothered about. But for me Arc has worked a lot better than just installing STO on its own.It used to come up has a virus. Not anymore.

I'm not trying to avoid download time and I'm not worried about ARC. I'm simply curious if the DVD still works as an installation disc. Can anyone try it and tell me if it works?
