With all the depressing news lately, one can only ask themselves, are MMO's dead and long gone ?
I'll keep this post short and sweet. I personally don't expect a triple AAA MMO to interest me anytime soon, if not ever again. Why?
MMO monetization and payment options are changing, this is not a SOFT change, but rather a HARD transition. F2P is starting to become more of a norm. Many game producers are looking at strategies to allow most gamers to try, in some way shape or form their game before purchase. I personally always thought that F2P games lacked a certain type of "quality" that I was used to. Most of them are garbage, but once you understand how these games are produced, budgeted, and released you'll understand why there are soo many bad F2P games in the market, and why there's going to be alot more coming.
Now, that being said, I heavily feel that the next most likely game that will truly interest me will most likely be a crowdfunded title. I'm thinking of the recent crowdfunded titles especially. I long for a magic/ high fantasy MMORPG (this is my classic favorite).
Smite right now, is a VERY hot GAME in terms of mechanics and gameplay. I expect alot of developers right now are mimicking the action combat from smite right now. The one with the best imitation of smite combat, along with good production quality & design will most likely be the next game I personally take interest in.
