FF14 don't need a f2p type model I say if they have around 500K players or so, but never say never, how many mmo out there said there, they'll never go to a f2p type model? and they did or close to it.

If FFXIV goes F2P I will quit it like I quit other games that went F2P.  I dont like F2P and will never again play another F2P game.  The only reason all these games went F2P is because they are not making money.  Thats the ONLY reason.  ESO, went F2P because they never made money on the game.  So they are switching over to a BS forum of making some people pay more money and nickle and dime those people just so they can make money.

Well guess what fokes, FFXIV made money on ARR.  There is no need for FFXIV to go F2P if they are making a profit.  If they ever get down to 100K players yea then it will go F2P. I doubt they will drop that low in subs because every 3 to 4 months they come out with new content and it keeps players subbing to the game.  Which keeps making them money.  They dont need F2P at all for their game.

    Edit

O there current Free weekends for Free 2 Weeks for past games to come back and get involved in the game again does not count as F2P.

For the record, Yoshi has said numerous times that while he has no real issue with the free to play model, they would prefer to stay subscription based. Given the advantages of not having to deal with publishers and investors, square can very likely afford to stick with the pay to play model. It's a better model for them, as it insures a constant income they can rely on.

However, he has made it abundantly clear in previous interviews that free to play is something they would consider if it were necessary to keep the lights on. Thankfully, I doubt they have the need.

There Free weekends is weird, I try to log in nope you don't have a sub payment running, I do have the game, and I did sub befor. There Free weekends is a joke.

That was tongue in cheek it in no way is a "we will never go f2p"  what he said about WoW.

Also Yoshi has never taken a negative stand on F2P and has never said they will not go F2P. They probably will in the future but like he said other games going B2P or F2P right now does not mean FFXIV ARR will follow suit. They have their own way of dealing with their game and I am happy that they clarified that.

Fact of the matter is that they relaunched the game and are enjoying healthy subscriber base they are not hurting as evidenced by their rapid content drive. They have the manpower and the passion for this franchise.

I don't believe anything anyone says about games anymore.

    Money talks and b.s. walks.

ZOS "took a stand" less than a year ago, and now none of what was said matters.

"We won't necessarily do x." This means nothing.

Edit: I have no idea how OP concludes from this that Naoki Yoshida said they will "always stay" pay to play.

Subscribers are satisfied with the subscription model, who knew.

The free login event ended today and I'm not subscribing to continue playing agian. (I'm a beta/retail player of the original game who quit after the combat patch ruined the game and my enjoyment, came back to play in FFXIV:ARR's alpha, got banned for posting a bug report on the alpha forums (yes I'm serious), got in early access to transfer my legacy characters and never paid anything for the game again.)

I stopped subscribing to games when I quit WoW in 2007.

I cannot justify paying a subscription to play a game every month anymore. Too many games are free, there's so many things you can play at either no cost or just an upfront cost (buy to play).  I'd rather games be B2P than F2P; barrier to entry that keeps most of the trash out, but still makes them money for every new player and (hopefully) keeps the microtransaction store away (as games like Path of Exile are rare).   Ontop of that, my gaming habits make that a complete waste of money, because I don't play the same game for weeks on end; I play a lot of different games throughout a normal week and if I subscribe to something I just feel like I'm forced to play that game and only that game or else I'm wasting my money.  And then once you stop subscribing you lose access and lose all the work you put into the game.

Maybe if this was 2004 again where I played MMOs (like FFXI) for 2 years at a time I'd be fine with subscribing, but times, and lifestyles, have changed.  Subscription based games are a dying breed, and only the niche or very popular ones can sustain themselves with it.

At the very least, they could offer a F2P version which either restricts you to a single server/character and limits you to level 20, or even just restricts access from anything except the Gold Saucer.  I mean seriously, I'd play triple triad and race chocobos for weeks.. but I sure as hell won't pay a monthly fee to do that.  Rather boot up my PS2 again (though at this point I'd be using an emulator with my transferred memory card data).

Fun fact: I'm probably going to play ESO once its B2P model is launched.

maybe, except, the P2P version the steak is cooked exactly how you like it, there are clean tables and utensils, and a waiter service, its not just about eating the food but enjoying the meal 'experience'. image

Oh come on now, we all know that not everybody is happy with their P2P steak experiences. If they were then steakhouse subscriptions wouldn't be plummeting all over the steakhouse business, forcing the steakhouses to start offering the raw beef for free.

It's great that P2P is working out for FFXIV. But, P2P clearly doesn't work for every game, just as F2P doesn't work for every game.

Perhaps the steakhouse should stop dropping the meat on the floor, burning it, having the waiters look like shit and treating the customers the same way and being located next to the papermill.

And now I'm hungry and want a steak :P

I think they should offer a Free to play/ Buy to play model to the game, FFXIV has almost the perfect set up for it. They could restrict the JOBs from the FTP/BTP classes, thereby limiting the FTP players but allowing a person to play the game off and on without having to carry a subscription.

You could have the following benefits:

    • The LvL 50 crafting field could be more active. As most drops could be set for JOB and crafting could be set to cover Classes
    • There would actually be slightly more Varity in classes, most people hit 30 turn on the job and don’t look back, this would allow and expanded use of the classes
    • It could lead to more subscriptions, once you have maxed out your class ad a BTP/FTP account there would be incentive to increase to a full account to take advantage of what they have to offer
    • I think people would have a better chance to convince some friends or lost FC members to come back and try the game or start up if they didn’t have to chuck $15 bucks down to try it.

People leave games for various reasons and like to jump back in with this patch or that patch, Look at EvE, I like to poke back in to that game from patch to patch and would do so more if it had a limited Buy to Play option so I could see if the game has changed enough to check it out. I am less likely to do that if it cost me $15.  EQ2 I have found that playing around on the FTP account has enticed me to spend the $9 once or twice to get the full account if only out of simple nostalgia.  And I say all of this as a FFXIV Legacy player with an active subscription from day 1.

To be fair for the price the waffle house steak and eggs isn't bad.

At the end of the day not every one wants the same thing.  B2P games are great for some, F2P is great for others.  I love DDO, but hate how much the pay wall limits your content.  I also like how I can jump back into GW2 any time I want to remind me of why I stopped playing and never have to fork out another cent.  Some people love these games and are 100% happy with their business model, but people are also happy with the subscription based model as well.

At this point in time FFXIV is doing great as a subscription model, and has pumped out some great free content.  They do what I would like to see my sub fee going for.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

You've had better luck with waffle house steaks then I have lol.

I do agree with everything else you said though and I do own GW2 as well and jump back in from time to time to see whats going on and happy I don't have to pay a cent to do so. I personally though prefer P2P as it usually gives content updates on a decent schedule (I'd glare at WoW and the content drought before Warlords but I don't play it anymore).

and what more needs to happen for the chips to be down?  I mean they did go B2P for several months while the fixed the game.  if they were going to jump ship at the first sign of trouble they would have done it by now.  On a related note I picked up a collectors copy for $19 during that time.

A lot, considering the game has done nothing but grow since it re-launched.  It's always hilarious to me to see these people talking about f2p as if there has been even the slightest indication that it would happen.

FFXIV would never, ever, ever have the kind of dev support it enjoys today if it went F2P.  The producer has explicitly stated this before too. Less stable income, more uncertainty on the month-per-month revenue, resulting in much more difficulty to develop any long-term contents.

I think you guys have enough F2P MMOs to enjoy the resulting content draughts in without FFXIV joining the club. Contrary to you, I prefer meaty content updates and expansions on a consistent basis.

Lol that actually made me laugh a lot more than it should have. Truth is though SE isn't gonna do much f2p because they are too cheap/greedy/stubborn.

Has the market not been saying F2P is making more money than a sub model ,at least that is what all the devs have been telling us,so who would be the greedy one then ?

There is a bit in the PAX East "future of online games" where one of the developers/panelists says that f2p makes more in the short term but it seems to even out over 3 years. Beyond the 3 years there is no data.

Yea, P2P doesn't work for games that are complete garbage and not worth paying for. P2P works fine when the game is worth paying for. FFXIV is a pretty solid game, so P2P works. It's mostly the shitty games that are F2P because no one would pay a sub for them, and then they proceed to rope people into the cash shop to make their profits.

The large amount of the games that are F2P today, were P2P in the past. P2P did work for many of them, for many years. They didn't suddenly become complete garbage just because they stopped charging upfront. The quality of the game has no bearing on whether it is F2P or P2P. It is MUCH easier to pass a poor game as P2P than it will ever be with F2P.

People have been ripping off other people with the P2P approach (pay now, get your product after) since the beginning of time. This goes back to the beginning of written history, and is the basis of much of the laws we have today. This does not make P2P products inferior... because the way a product is sold, doesn't affect the product itself.

    Why FFXIV still p2p?

easy.... its only game realy focus in core PVE/RAID make interresing fights

tis create enough playerbase to keep sustain P2P you can consider sucess at  this point

Eso fall in B2P category (with premium shame)

but at last no open legs to F2P(99,99% games are pay2win others 0.01% idk)
