Thing is we don't know what they are going to have to do to keep the servers running after the game releases. I'm more inclined to believe they will be selling cosmetics and lower tier ships via supporter packages and the like.

I wish that's the case and we'll have to wait and see. Though you can't blaim anyone for being suspicious of a developer who's known for selling shitloads of assets for real cash, when they claim they'll suddently stop doing what has brought them millions of funds.
Sandi claimed, in an answer to an interview question weeks ago, she wanted to stop giving insentive to existant backers to keep on buying ships... then they did the anniversary sales and there's probably more sales coming up. So I guess she isn't trying very hard :pleased:
Not only will they NEVER give up the cash cow of selling ships, they will add in the peripherals like all the ship add ons and the players will buy it all up left right and center.
We should give thanks to the SC community for supporting such a negative on the gaming market. So now we can expect more developers to look at this model and copy it.I guess we already have seen it as there is a game coming out that is selling houses and of course Crowfall selling plots ,all these games now are taking the actual FUN out of gaming and just selling you the most desirable items we USED to earn in games.

They've already added ship add ons in their cash shop.
I would wait until the game goes live before buying anything.

1) the twitch streamer remembered wrong, no such post by Ben was found
2) Chris Roberts - in Episode 1.5 of Bar Citizen - spoke about Starter packages being sold post launch. Operative word being STARTER here. He mentioned the Aurora and the "Hornet". The second starter package is the Mustang. The Hornet is the basic single seat fighter. An honest mistake/mix-up - as most people believed on the forums- or "irrefutable evidence for CIG plans to sell big ships for thousands of dollars post launch ". You decide.

Why am i not the least surprised. Nobody should be supporting such a crooked operation. We all like to believe in the old "what comes around goes around" but now a days i don't even have faith in just cause.
In reality, what this business is doing is asking for crowd support to run a cash shop so that it can sell virtual items right back to that crowd that gave them the free money in the first place. How is that for a slap in the face.

Ben already mentioned it like ~a year ago that they were going to consider selling ships post launch. We'll just have to wait and see, though the signs are pretty apparent.
I thought Lesnick said they would see what the community wanted post release, aka if we can sell ships post release, we will. They've said they will sell game packages with non-starter ships, ie SH Hornet game package. Perhaps those could be bought and gifted to main accounts? Not sure how that works.

Yes. STARTER ships.
The quote I mentioned (which was Ben's answer to a question on stream) wasn't about starter ships, more about ships in general and sales as they currently are. Then again this is Ben.
We've gone over this before, let's not repeat ourselves again and again

The ship sales aren't the best ways for them to get funds anymore since most of the people who buy up ships already have what they are after, or have so much invested already they shuffle ships around rather than actually buy anything new. It's the same situation that local game stores face with magic the gathering, only in that situation there is a rotation that happens on cards that forces people to buy new product every four to six months.
Game looks incredible and the developer's vision is so ambitious that it's something I definitely want to get involved in however looking at the eye watering cost of everything has definitely put me off. For those of you who have played the game, am I going to be good with just buying the $54 starter package? I want to be able to enjoy the game and get into it but I don't want to spend 2 weeks playing and then feel compelled to spend another $100, spend another month playing then feel compelled to spend $200 etc. Is there any decent info anywhere with a breakdown of the real money costs of playing this game?
Once the game is actually finished we can give you a full answer. My recomendation? Wait until they release the game.
Even though I am a heavy backer I would agree with this statement. No point in investing now if your not on board all ready. Follow the game and its information since that is free.

That's why they're bringing out new ships and new modules. Their latest sale was quite successful.
As soon as the game is released, you won't be able to buy ships with real money anymore.. that's the promise they gave.
Just noticed how terrible this person isolated the background. I made a cleaned up version for people who want to use it. It has Mr. Clean certified edges.
Starter pack gives you the MMO and the Single Player Campaign. Two games. Ships will be availble in the finished game with ingame credits. Single Player Campaign needs no ships at all, you´ll get what you need from the campaign.
The end. It´s a pre-order. With alpha access.
The success-hating envious failed wannabe developer trolls who are lurking the SC topics will of course tell you a different story. But 103 million $ already prove they´re wrong.
To be fair is nothing really proved until the game been out for 6 months and is popular. If they make a fun game SC will succeed but a huge sum spent does not mean you make a great game.
They have proved that you can get a lot of money from fans to make your game (once at least, if someone can repeat it is hard to say) but there is no final judgment out on anything yet. Lets wait and see, whatever happens things at least wont get boring (and I predict high doses of nerd-rage no matter how the game goes, but then we already got a load of it before launch so it is like predicting violence in the middle east).
