I think that's why I find most modern MMORPG's boring. Quest are more a chore than game play.
Not if the combat is fun. Granted it is idiotic to put some uninteresting text quests with the tasks. It is much better just do what D3 does .. have bounties. Just fun tasks that you get reward for.
It's not "fun", it's all about achievement and progression, and why I play titles such as EVE. Throw in the territory control and defense, and it's a formula that few "games' emulate, and why I have few choices available to me out there today.
wow really?
I wonder why you do not find games that are fun. Personally, i do not think "achievement" in video games are real. I would reserve the word "achievement" to real world stuff, like career advancement.
But that is just me, and I guess you view the world, and your life very differently from me.

achievement
a·chieve·ment
(ə-chēv′mənt)
n.
1. The process of achieving something
2. Something that has been achieved, especially by means of skill or perseverance
That's from thefreedictionary.com
An achievement isn't simply reserved for grand RL accomplishments. This struggle you seem to have with understanding basic definitions of certain words in the English language is consistent, I'll give you that.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

may be not for you. Personally .. even if you want to use the word "achievement" in video games, i find that trivial, unrewarding, and basically a psychological trick on the part of devs to make entertainment.
If you believe video game "achievement" is as important as real life ones .. that is your prerogative. I just think that is ... unwise. But hey, that is just me.
... I am going to disagree. I think most people enjoy gaming with others. The issue we face in the MMO and FPS world for that matter is what I call the "douchebag quotient". Games have been so simplified and "dumbed" down that the hardcore, the RPG player, is left dealing with 14 years olds that think the F-Bomb makes them sound like an adult and our immersion is ruined by 20 people all running around with names based on variations of star war characters or penis jokes.
You try to join with others and game but you spend so much time ducking the morons that it is frustrating, killing the game experience and makes you quit looking for other, like minded players.
*snip*
This would almost be right if it wasn't for the ego.
Most people would appreciate the chance to play with people of similar nature to themselves, and have troubles appreciating everyone else that may end up part of the playerbase. Mopar63 feels that 14 year olds dropping the F-bomb are douchebags, and I'd bet that 14 year olds dropping the F-bomb would probably have a similar opinion of him, but would think it's great to hang out with a bunch of other F-bombers. It really boils down to personality types conflict with other personality types.
The problem that mmo's need to overcome is how to segregate the different personality types. They've already started with the basics like PvP, PvE & PvX server segregations. There are several other forms they can and have used. Difficulty levels on zones or servers keeps the adept or hardcore from the less capable groups. RP specific chat channels for keeping role players together. There are lots of ways to help people find likeminded others.
Segregating the players is of benefit to both the developer and the players. A player is less likely to abandon a game when there are friends playing it. So if a player can find more people that are of a "similar mind" they will likely be a longer lasting client, and a happier player.
Could the developers create a system that used the starting area to provide a testing ground for problem solving abilities, reaction times, and maybe even social tendencies? If they could direct similar individuals to servers wouldn't that lend toward a happier existence in game? Of course there would need to be some considerations for dealing with real world friends but server transfers could work, especially if there was a "general population" server or such.
Online gaming is a common way for people to find entertainment in the safety and isolation of their home. This entertainment medium is very attractive to the types of people that do not excel at social interaction. We can continue to feed their antisocial behaviors until it becomes a huge problem for them and potentially society in general, or we can promote ways to make the activity easier to socialize.

we are talking about entertainment here, not education or training. If people want to be antisocial in the comfort of their own home, in enjoying their entertainment, is there a reason not to provide that to them?
Watching movies alone is also antisocial. Shall we inhibit people from watching movies alone, or reading alone too?

Because that's what he said. /sarcasm
You're not arguing the point he is making, just an imaginary one that's much easier for you to dismantle.
MOBAs, as popular as they are (and you never hesitate to point out), are all about achievements. That's the entire point of leaderboards, ranking systems, etc.
Valve has built an entire system into their gaming platform specifically for scratching gamers' achievement itches. It's called, rather unimaginatively, the Steam Achievements.
Super Mario Bros. provided a score based on your performance. That was so players could "achieve" the highest score possible. It kept folks playing far past one playthrough.
D3 is filled with achievements. The carrots dangling in front of players. Unless you immediately quit D3 after you finished the story, you're working your way towards that next achievement bud. It may be a fun ride, sure, but you're not running in place.
We can continue to feed their antisocial behaviors until it becomes a huge problem for them and potentially society in general, or we can promote ways to make the activity easier to socialize.

You can go ahead and masturbate all you want and I don't intend to tell you that you can't. You can be the one telling yourself that it's as good as having sex, just don't expect me to agree.
By your adamant support of "solo play" could we be inclined to think that you may have moderate to severe antisocial tendencies? As with all deviated human behaviors the individual searches for ways to either normalize or trivialize said behavior. If such a behavior is not deviant, then why would the individual need to garner acceptance? The added irony would be an antisocial individual still feeling forced to socially seek justification for their antisocial behavior.

Good god, lol.
Any adult should be able to separate real life achievements from those found in videos games. No one has once said "video game 'achievement' is as important as real life ones". That's you having a conversation with yourself. Something that is mildly entertaining but has nothing to do with this thread and is yet another example of: duh, kinda goes without saying.
Here, I put the definition of "achievement" back into your quote of mine as a reread is obviously needed (although I'm guessing you didn't even bother to read it in the first place as is typical).
Honestly, I don't give two shits what you find "trivial", this is not about YOU. Also give MadFrenchie's post a read through, that will further assist you in getting this rather juvenile and unnecessary tangent.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

You're both showing one the worst forms of anti-social behavior, an inability to respectfully communicate and understand differing views.

For myself, you are probably quite correct. I have no problems with being painfully honest and I do not believe that flowering up a statement makes it better understood. I find that too many times we are afraid to hurt the feelings of someone that may be blindly walking down the wrong path and that a good slap in the face is what would serve them best. I am also completely willing to accept a slap in my own face if someone can prove that I need one. Is there something with my statement that is incorrect?
EDIT:
I know that I am short on compassion, and that it is a sign of antisocial behavior that is becoming all too common on the internet. One of the reasons behind this is that there is nothing here at mmorpg.com that I care about. There isn't a single friend, or even a person that I greatly respect. What reason could I possibly have to care about the faceless names that litter the page?
There are times though, where I start to find a bond. Someone that suggests something that I like, or is similar to thoughts that I have. Sometimes I might have an enjoyable bit of forum banter and think quite positively on the interaction. That happens when I find a similar minded individual. And in my original post, the suggestion that I was trying to make was that developers could try and find more ways to bring like minded people together. I suggested that might help solve the problem of antisocial behavior with some people.
And yes, I took offense that the paragraph suggesting that antisocial behavior was a problem got ripped out of my thread and trivialized. So yeah, my statement still stands, I'm not changing a thing, and I'm probably still an asshole.

No one said anything about real life, just that I play MMORPGs for their progression, and not what I consider to be meaningless gear progression, which is far too often overused in many titles.

I am pretty sure when Cecropia typed "RL", it means "real life". But again, we are talking about "achievements" in video games, which I do not considered meaningful, subjectively, of course.

well, i hope so. But since some here are writing about "living virtual lives", i have a feeling not everyone is up and up on this, and confused that building some virtual chairs, in a game, is actually a "real" achievement.

You were the one that brought real life to table in the first place.
Does "Personally, i do not think 'achievement' in video games are real. I would reserve the word "achievement" to real world stuff, like career advancement." ring a bell somewhere in there?
Myself, and a few others, were simply trying to show you that there is a distinction between certain types of achievements and that maybe, just maybe, you've built up this word into something that it is not. How meaningful an achievement in a video game (which is pretty damn low on the richter scale for all of us, no fucking duh) is to you is irrelevant. Do you still not understand?
Congratulations on derailing another one of your own threads wasting time debating a clearly defined word.

... and yet this from a person sitting atop of a mountain preaching against anti-socialization. You might want to take a deep breath an look at yourself in the mirror before criticizing others. Has it ever occurred to you that the reason players may not want to socialize as much in games as they would like in a game is the same reason why you have a difficult time socializing on MMORPG.com and can't find a single friend or person you greatly respect on this forum? How can it be that you espouse yourself to be this overly social person advocating for more socialization in games and yet can not adequately socialize on a gaming forum/website chock-full of the very same people you would be socializing with in a video game?
The reason's many people do not socialize/group in video games has very little to do with being social or anti-social and a whole lot more to do with the putrid state video game communities are in now days. I, myself, am a very social person and would love to group more in games but refuse to put myself through the headaches that grouping in games today bring. It is the rude and anti-social behavior of gaming communities now days that drive the social player to want to play solo, not the other way around. You yourself are exhibiting a form of anit-social behavior in this thread, and the sad part is that you don't even realize it. Sometimes one just needs to see things from a different perspective to see the full picture.

hmm .. how do you know what reasons why other people do not socialize. You are a very social person, but you don't represent everyone here, do you?
I can easily said that i have no interests in socializing in games, and that is the reason. You don't think everyone plays games like you, do you?

I've come to that conclusion based on the opinion of not only my own circle of friends, as well as many of the opinions by a multitude of players on various forums. I am sure this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone but you. Are you telling me that you have never heard the same, or are you just being argumentative for the heck of it? That said, notice I said "many," which means some but not all. You obviously fall outside of that "many" that I mentioned so that obviously doesn't represent you, does it? I can choose to be equally as condescending as you, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and leave it at that.

Giving how toxic communities are in big games like LoL, i would say your anecdotal stories are just that.
I can tell also tell you "my circle of friends" are of the opposite opinion, and i don't why your circle of friends is superior to mine.

What do toxic communities in big games like LoL have anything to do with my post except validate it? You are making no sense. No one said anything about my circle of friends being superior to yours. And I fully accept that you and your circle of friends are anti-social and don't fall within the "many" that I cited. My post regarding my gaming experiences do not discount yours. Stop while you're still treading water because you have no where to go but under from here, trust me.
What does toxic communities in big games like LoL have anything to do with my post?
I guess i have to spell it out for you.
Toxic communities in big games have lots of players that don't care about socializing. Otherwise, the "community" would not be so toxic, or that they will leave.
Socializing, or the lack of, in this case, is not important enough for them to play something else. Is this logic clear enough, or do you need more discussions to help you comprehend?

Here, I put the definition of "achievement" back into your quote of mine as a reread is obviously needed (although I'm guessing you didn't even bother to read it in the first place as is typical).
Honestly, I don't give two shits what you find "trivial", this is not about YOU. Also give MadFrenchie's post a read through, that will further assist you in getting this rather juvenile and unnecessary tangent.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

well, i hope so. But since some here are writing about "living virtual lives", i have a feeling not everyone is up and up on this, and confused that building some virtual chairs, in a game, is actually a "real" achievement.
You are not confused on this point, are you?

You nailed the primary motivation behind them all.
