An Overwatch movie would have been a better choice.
A new brand with far less lore? maybe not
a bunch of characters with personalities already made. The trailers for Overwatch are already better and more personal then anything warcraft has given us.
So the first WoW movie should have been called World of Lovecraft or World of Dramacraft? Sounds exactly what happened to Transformers movies thanks to Michael Bay.
Michael Bay is in the Hollywood version of Uwe Boll, from where I sit. He just gets bigger budgets to waste.
The reviewer at The Wrap gave Dragonball: Evolution a 4/5. His review of video game movies is completely invalid and can be thrown out.
My issue with this movie is that World of Warcraft (the game) never took itself that seriously. It's always been a joyful, upbeat genre with a self-aware sense of humor. Just type /silly in game, or start dancing. How about Theralion, the gay dragon, who uses abilities like Fabulous Flames and Dazzling Destruction?
To go so hardcore serious with this movie is like taking The Lord of the Rings and having the writers for The Big Bang Theory churn out the script. It's antithetical to the source material.
I think that the direction they should have gone is Action/Humor. For instance something like The Guardians of the Galaxy route. A heartwarming, energetic and humorous tale of humans and Orcs working together for a common goal. All of this over the top, grimdark seriousness is probably what is causing these critics to call it campy and review it poorly.
Just like Superman vs Batman. I've never seen Superman so silent. You gotta carry over the spirit of fun these games have. My first laugh in WoW was seeing the Night Elf doing the Michael Jackson dance on top of a table. Sucking the humor out of a movie should a crime.
The perception of what the movie is supposed to be seems to be a HUGE barrier. Even this article posted by mmorpg.com itself is guilty.
Everyone keeps calling this a WoW movie and comparing it to WoW. It's not WoW, and was never meant to be.
As several others mentioned, it was based off the Warcraft RTS games. Those games' stories were pretty dark and brutal, for the most part. They were more akin to Independence Day/War of the Worlds and such than Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean, they literally were an alien/demon invasion.
I think that perception of "this is WoW" is really hurting the movie alot more than is sensible. I haven't seen the movie, so I'm certainly not going to defend it's quality. But, it's undeniably clear that everyone is going to the theatres to see "WoW on the big screen".
I think Blizzard really shot themselves in the foot by allowing people to think that, just to bring in more numbers.
Obviously, with the public movie-crowd only being familiar with WoW, it might have warranted making an actual WoW movie, but nevertheless... they chose Warcraft and not World of Warcraft.
As a filmmaker i gonna say this. At the end of the day, is all about a good scrip, Hollywood is having a hard time trying to make or find one. The WoW trailers were more than enough to know how mediocre this movie will be, just another copy and paste story with a WoW setting. Just sad.

What movies have you made that we can judge?
Good script? You think Mad Max had a good script? or Wall-E? Or Showgirls? Or Rambo... There is more to movies then just script. You can have a bad script or no script at all and still get a good movie out.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what

John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."

the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
DragonLance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight Animated movie featuring Keith Sutherland and a myriad of other talentless oafs.
The Chronicles for the DragonLane Series are epic and beautifully written. The animated movie was highly anticipated.. for almost 20 years.... Then the movie was released.. Even one of the authors hated it.. Should say something....
Now fast forward a half dacade later and we have a Warcrfat movie based on a Game... But this ones a live action!....
Dont be fooled itll be a massive screw up like DragonLance, Dragon Ball and many more to come... To create a movie from World of Warcraft that can fit in a 2 hours movie that took 10 years to get to the theaters.. it cannot possibly be Great... It will be pretty... give Blizzard Credit.. they can create an amazing world and have done so.. but Thats been seen before in movies... So yeah... besides the twisted character roles... i dunno... I have no faith in this endeavor.

I think you quoted the wrong person.
My settings on condensed quote to prevent a mile long quote every time i click it. Then the downside is people don't see what the rest of the quote had sometimes. maybe i should see how to change it to 2 or 3 quotes instead of just 1.

Read the books as a kid so I was looking forward to seeing the movie!

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT
Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.
Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games
Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery
But then, since a ton of people played WoW there, it was probably enough.
