This post is more aimed at players who played the original Darkfall Online, who remember what the base game was.
Bala and I have created this spreadsheet based on each development team's patchnotes and their roadmaps' stated launch goals.
Please note:
- It's a factual account, listed by the date each change was made.
- It's not an opinion piece - hopefully the spreadsheet will help you form your own opinions about some aspects of each game.
- We've deliberately not talked about hardware etc. The focus is purely on what game changes have been made/are planned for launch by the two development teams.
Where information isn't certain we've indicated this with "?".
We've highlighted orange those items which are the same/similar in each version of the game.
If we've missed information or got something wrong, let us know (but we've generally tried to avoid going into too much detail on the sheet itself ).
Hopefully this will be of interest/use to some of you out there. And we'll work to keep it updated as more patch notes come out.
Cards on the Table:
TL;DR of what follows:
I've (and others have) been vocally highly critical of RoA's developers ('BPG') for the way they've handled two big mistakes they've made which had the potential to greatly harm the Darkfall franchise. Some in the RoA community have been unhappy at how vocal I (and others) have been. Those members might therefore make negative posts in this thread about me, or about this topic.
The reality is that the spreadsheet is a neutral document that shows - on a line by line basis based on each developer's own patch notes - what each developer has changed in the original game. It is nothing more - and nothing less - than that.
The full version:
Cards on the table: I personally have been publicly very critical of the developers of Rise of Agon (the other version of this Darkfall game currently under development).
I have called them out for twice failing to deal honestly with their playerbase on two potentially game breaking issues (an accidental 'release' of the code early on and a duping bug they'd not caught for two weeks after their recent launch (and then tried to deny its existence).
I have also called them out publicly for the abysmal moderation of their forums and their official Discord server.
And I have been publicly vocal about some changes to their game which were so obviously not thought through before adding them in (most recently their alignment system, which is now going to be changed because players were so unhappy with it.)
There are a number of players of RoA who are very unhappy that I've spoken my mind on these topics - and that I pursue them so vocally.
The original developer of the original Darkfall Online was a company called Aventurine. That name has become synonymous with a company that lied to and cheated its community - to say the least. And by deliberately trying to cover up their mistakes, I saw that RoA's developers ('BPG') were starting to go down that path. And I don't think the franchise can handle that again.
RoA's community is understandably protective of their game (in which I've rolled two "Legend" accounts and have been trying out my wolf and human characters.) Some of that community's more vocal members see my criticisms as being aimed at harming RoA.
The truth of it remains that I'm doing what I can to make sure BPG remains truthful and open with their community. And I will continue to do so - and use whatever tools are at my disposal - to 'keep them honest'.
Losing community trust would be the worst thing that can happen for the Darkfall franchise. But I remain certain that BPG will continue to deliver great work on RoA (as the spreadsheet above shows) and I do believe that they are learning from the mistakes they've been making in their communications with us.
