Producer's Letter Introduces Rift Prime, a Subscription Based Progression Server - Rift - MMORPG.com

Rift News - The latest producer's letter has been published on the Rift site to take a look back at the accomplishments in 2017 as well as to introduce a new server type called "Rift Prime". These servers will see players start fresh and will feature both a subscription revenue model and progression advancement through the game's expansions and content. There will be no lockboxes, a "significantly reduced store" and more current store items available through game play.

Until I get more information on that, my interest is mild. They'll milk a few people but honestly, they aren't even bothering to take care of Rift as it is now, so idk. One thing you can count on with Trion is for them to pull a fast one first and then 'adjust' it later. Did it with Archeage multiple times and did it with forgotten Devilian. Hell, even tried to do it with Rift last month with the 100$ mount lootbox which in the CEO words was "to help spread joy this season" or some garbage. So again, mildly interested until I know how 'reduced' the store is in a sub only server.

Eh, Trion went from being one of my favorite game dev's from Rift early on to my 2nd least fav (all EA published games are first) after AA. Then on top of the blunder that was AA they ruined Rift with their cash shop direction and heavy handedness. They remain to this day the only dev I will never play another game of.

im not a fan of splitting player bases but if your gonna,sub only no cash shop anything is how you get my attention

Don't have high hopes Rift team pulling this off to well. In the past they rush things to fast and does not go to well.

That basically means you have to pay... to be able to play and progress... to unlock cash shop items.

And I thought Trion could not go any lower!

ps: I am a Rift CE owner who has been there since beta.

I am going to need more details before committing. The accelerated progress, and cash shop inclusion are already raising red flags for me. Trion has burned way too many brides.

Id definitly be in to this. I played rift on release and it was a blast. Chloromancer was a very fun class!

Would love to go back to rift. Rift at launch was so fun and the pve content of the game is pretty decent if i can replay through that without the bullshit p2w stuff going on it would be a blast !

I did their little survey a few months back and was waiting for what they would announce. Unfortunately this wasn't to my expectations. Rift was wonderful (also a CE owner and founder, played all 5 CBTs and was subbed for 2yrs)

I just don't think that this will bring back that old magic, the fact that they are keeping the CS on top of paying an actual "sub" is not what I was hoping for. Rose coloured glasses it may be, I want the old Rift back.

You know what? Options are good.

This attempt, even if it fails, is better than trying nothing.

All comes down to what is in cash shop. I don't think they'll go to all this effort to not do it properly.

Don't trust Trion they should just let people transfer their original characters if people want to be on a server with no loot-box and leave lootbox content behind by mailing it to other characters on the server for other characters.

Original Rift, WoW and Lotro were the games that got me into MMOs but Rift was the game I took most seriously. I min-maxed, I theorycrafted builds, I knew every dungeon and raid in vanilla but fell off the hardcore pve in the expansion, still always enjoyed the game until it went F2P.

Milk whatever is left of it. Just like WoW will soon do with its Vanilla realms, although at least there was a lot of crying and (apparent) demand for those.
Asking for a sub however for an old game is preposterous in this day and age. I hope their experiment fails so others are discouraged to try it.
If you want a sub, you'd better have a AAA title with amazing story, lots of content and great up to date graphics and mechanics. Don't try to resell what you sold once already years ago, dear lord.

We have seen this before with AA fresh start...how well did that go? Yeah...clearly it made Trion a lot of $$$ so why not sucker the Rift players, too.

I don't think this is going to make much of a difference. They have a different team, a different vision, and less passion than what they had in the beginning. I do still play Rift (occasionally) as a F2P game, but I wouldn't be interested in this. 

I don't understand why people are all of a sudden interested in a game just because it's subscription based; there is more to a game than it's payment model.

I just got access to my old email and Rift account yesterday after not playing since a few months after release. And I was completely lost in where my character was, what he was doing, and where he needed to go. So I'm going to hold off and see what they deliver in this progression server. As it seems like it will be a great way for someone who hasn't played since launch. To experience everything the game has developed sequentially.

The real sad thing about all of this is that more people want Archeage to have a sub only server vs Rift.
