It doesn't cost a ton of money to develop a good online store.  What it takes is time and competent developers.

It's not a one time payment and you're set for life tough. As all digital distributions, it's in constant development to keep relevant while also trying to make it as secure as possible. There's also workers that need to handle the system, customers, advertisements and so on.

It's commonly impractical for outsiders to properly evaluate a company's security practices.  One company gets hacked and the hackers got a database of salted password hashes generated by a good password hashing algorithm.  Another company gets hacked and the hackers got a list of passwords in the clear.  Those two incidents are not at all similar.  The former is entirely consistent with the company being pretty good on security matters.  The latter should get people fired, and would lead to potential customers regarding the latter company as basically radioactive if the general public understood computer security.  Which they don't.

If you are willing to hand over partial control of your PC; all the data on your devices; every click and word typed on your devices, etc. just to play a particular video game then you deserve every crappy thing that the future holds for you.

The entire video game industry, indeed most of tech nowadays (this website included), is about gaining control over as much of your data and control of your computers/ devices as they can get just for a tiny bit of convenience for you.

There is no video game that could be made that is worth sacrificing all that... to say nothing of handing control of all that data to the Chinese government/ Communist Party. If you have any of these launchers installed, you deserve whatever happens to you.

You better unplug from the internet then.

Uninstall everything now and disconnect while there's still time.

Here is a reality check for you.  The second you decided to be a member of the online world you already gave that up.  It is not just a video game store front.

Practically every major website at this point has been hacked with millions of peoples data being distributed all over the world.  Trackers for websites track your interests and clicks to better sell you shit.  And this is the small fraction we know of that makes the news due to the size of the data breaches.  Hell Equifax with all your personal info was breached.

You can only do so much to protect yourself in this day and age so I guess every person in a civilized broadband country or wireless deserves every crappy thing that the future holds.

Welcome to the real world now find another reason to hate.
The counter argument is that just because you got mugged a few too many times, doesn't mean you need to resign yourself to keep getting mugged without even a protest.

I doubt anyone here is criticizing a perceived lack of data security on Epic's part is doing so as part of a grander scheme of protesting against all poor data security practices.

No, it's part and parcel of hating Epic because there are now certain games that will only be on the Epic store temporarily.

Oh, and let's not act as if Valve's record with this has been just aces:

Personally, I was talking in general.

Still, multiple launchers from multiple store fronts means multiple vulnerability points, even assuming all digital store fronts have equal levels of security.

Some reddit folks did made a valid point (irrelevant to the quoted discussion) regarding the negative aspects of having multiple store fronts that act as more than just game downloaders\updaters. Here's for example an archive of games that "treated GOG customers as second class":

I didn't mean to imply you specifically were the poster who was criticizing Epic about security unfairly, just that I don't think many, if any, of the folks who keep bringing up the security issue in all these exclusive threads are doing so in good faith, because every company with any substantial consumer base online will have likely had an issue with data security at some point in their existence.

It makes the folks claiming they wanna stick with Steam for security reasons seem disingenuous, specifically in light of the fact that Valve has had multiple issues over the years with Steam.

    An interesting article:

Gamers Hate the Epic Store, but They Hated Steam Too

    https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/289276-gamers-hate-the-epic-store-but-they-hated-steam-too

Steam may be the default gaming solution for players, but the idea that its hands-off management method represents some kind of idyllic “free market” or intrinsically fair discovery system simply isn’t accurate. A recent Gamasutra investigation of Steam’s Discovery Queue found that October 2018 changes Valve made to the Steam Discovery Algorithm appear to be prioritizing larger games over smaller ones. Whether that change was fair probably depends on whether you’re one of the studios whose games are seeing more traffic or that never got visibility at all. Steam doesn’t detail how its algorithm operates to prevent people from gaming the system, so players don’t have a window into how it operates beyond investigations like this.

The difference is the odds of getting mugged are actually pretty small when taking the overall population into account vs data breaches and sharing.  A CCP can protect you from being mugged whereas an adblocker will not protect your personal information.

But back to the topic at hand.  Frenchie is right that this is more about the fact developers are exclusively signing with Epic.  You cannot fault them for wanting to keep more of their money.  Steam has had a stranglehold on the market for a long time.  This was bound to happen and just surprised it was not sooner to be honest.

The fact is, the days of it just being Steam is over and that fact is evident.  If Steam was doing this I wonder if the outrage would still be there?  I doubt it seriously.
actually we can, and not buy from then.

in the end of the day, they didn't need to do all this deals of exclusivity, if they did one single thing, epic gave the playes, the buyers, the consummers just 10% discount on his games, don't they say epic jsut ask for 8% so that means they could sell the game cheaper with would make people buy from then, but no, they prefer to do this and get a bad rep then give people some advantage, then later we ahve asses here saying we should support devs, and I need to ask why? they don't seen to care much about the ones who are buying from then

The problem with this is that you are thinking short term. What Epic is doing right now is entice potential buyers with exclusive titles, they can stop that as soon as they have a customer base. Now imagine Epic reversing that 10% discount when they have a satisfactory customer base, an "epic" shitstorm would ensue. Exclusives you can drop after a certain time, no biggie.

What they are doing is quite smart. to lure people away from established outlets you have to entice them, literally offering them something the other store doesn't. Not with discounts (as described above) or with a store front with even more functions then Steam has (that would be a navigational nightmare for new customers. People grew into Steams complexity as the platform expanded for example). Epic is doing the "right" things to stand out and as several people have said above, once they aren't the new kid on the block anymore and are more established you won't hear anyone whine any more, I remember when Steam hit the scene, this is nothing in comparison. Ohh, and they give away a free game every two weeks, its The Witness right now, not bad at all.

Just my 2 cents, i don't give a hoot about different launchers and storefronts although I can see the idiocy in having just as much different launchers/storefronts as different games on your PC. Actually, i have 9 games installed right now and 7 launchers.....

They can't do it. They already gave the discount to the developers.
Think about it. Lets say for the sake of simplicity that the game costs 100 and instead of 30, they ask the developers for 12. If they give the customers another 10% discount, that means their own profit will need to drop to 2.

    ....
Steam won't allow a developer to sell cheaper on another store. I don't think you actually tried to learn what's going on.
There is a subtle but significant difference between not allowing somebody to sell cheaper on another store and requesting to be able to match all discounts. Steam is doing the later and not the former.

You are implying that if Steam sells a product for 60, they force the developers to sell fpr 60 everywhere else. Which is false.

actually we can, and not buy from then.

in the end of the day, they didn't need to do all this deals of exclusivity, if they did one single thing, epic gave the playes, the buyers, the consummers just 10% discount on his games, don't they say epic jsut ask for 8% so that means they could sell the game cheaper with would make people buy from then, but no, they prefer to do this and get a bad rep then give people some advantage, then later we ahve asses here saying we should support devs, and I need to ask why? they don't seen to care much about the ones who are buying from then
The problem with this is that you are thinking short term. What Epic is doing right now is entice potential buyers with exclusive titles, they can stop that as soon as the have customer base.

The sad part is Sweeney/Epic has literally said this exact thing, and yet folks are still doom-calling around it... Smh.

They weren't ambiguous about why they were doing the exclusive thing.  If they don't wean themselves off of it, I'm down to take them to task accordingly.  But this ain't 12 buds doing a Kickstarter, here; I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when they make such clear statements.

If you are willing to hand over partial control of your PC; all the data on your devices; every click and word typed on your devices, etc. just to play a particular video game then you deserve every crappy thing that the future holds for you.

The difference is the odds of getting mugged are actually pretty small when taking the overall population into account vs data breaches and sharing.  A CCP can protect you from being mugged whereas an adblocker will not protect your personal information.

problem is there is not really a lure per see, most games are getting flack, gearbox saying they are happy to sell on epic because players can't do a bad review on his games means a lot more then the issue on epic and steam fights, same with gog and steam, in the end of the day I will go for the cheaper, if I go for a single player game I really don't care for the lot of multiplayer, so gog do fits me better, but I tend to buy from steam because its cheaper, and since I only buy games in offers make this even more interesting for me jump in launch dates games, most games I play only deserve one run for it, because most games today are story based and not really gameplay

they want to force people? ok go ahead, too bad I don't like it and will not support it, the fact i'm having problems with epic without I even downloading they launcher already is annoying

and for the otehr mentioning origin and blizzard, I don't have both only games I have on origin is kingdom of amalur, battlefield 3(all other batle field are crap and the 4th was the same as the 3rd so no buyed it) and wichter 3, and that was before I did get steam, after I get steam I only did buy games there for promos and free games I did get, and only reason I still keep it, is payment models, they don't require my CC to buy games, so it a win for
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Well, actions speak louder than words, and so far the actions are what is pushing people away from Epic store. That, and how easily the people who join the store break their word and promises. A PR mess to be sure.

Except for an extremely vocal minority I don't think their actions are driving people away at all, quite the opposite to be honest, if the first was indeed the case they would be switching tactics in an instant, they got the metrics. As to developers appearing on Steam only to say bye bye and move over to Epic before their game releases, I think it says more about them then about Epic. And in all honesty: the new Metro, Operencia, Ashen, B3, D2 etc. Epic sure does know how to recognize quality no matter what you think of their practices.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

Since they started on this route, they have no choice but to stay on it. It's not like they can take back the discount.

Personally I'm morbidly curious to see how they will recoup their money once they actually establish themselves, seeing as how aggressively anti-consumer they are.

As for quality, in the era of Anthems, Fallouts 76 etc where the false concept of game as service lowered quality to abysmal levels, Epic has managed to attract some hot air balloon titles by basically pre-purchasing all sales. As for the developers agreeing to those exclusive deals, it's obvious they'll agree to the guaranteed return of investment money, if they are pessimistic of the real market value of their product.

Epic sure knows how to attract titles that don't need any marketing (or somebody else did the marketing for them), that's for certain.

Just think, a vast majority of people on this site and many gaming sites, I'd argue any place that is vocal about gaming, hates mobile and cash shops far worse than epic and their store...

    and yet...

Companies are listening to the quiet ones too. They far out number everyone else.
