Tldr SBS screwed giving the info, people misassumed, dragor got pissed and hey presto no king
Almost like SBS has a breakdown in their communication. This probably wouldn't have happened if the maps were ready from the get go. But really, the way SBS handles things, is just all round bad.
For example, Caspian approached the OCE community to change the Hrothi biomes. Something people did bring up when map voting was happening. Since the Hrothi biomes are laughable. Really more Brudvir biomes over Hrothi. So now he is doing, well possibly doing a last minute change. Which is awesome, don't get me wrong. But doing it a few days when the maps are meant to get released. Well anyone can see a delay coming at least for OCE.
They really need to make info clear from the start. It shouldn't be this utterly confusing. Can't bring this up or everyone jumps you. Though the forums/discord appear to jump people less these days. People bringing up their concerns have more people agreeing with him. Which in some ways is a bad sign for SBS. Really gotta get their shit together. If the inner white knight circle is starting to break, it's really the beginning of the end. Money wise.
I don't want to sound like a one track record but a system for handling players that pull out is essential for this sort of game. I am going to assume the CoE response to this will be to try to create a software tool to sort this out if it happens again (that seems to be their default position for any issue). This is just the sort of thing you do by hand and was sorted out in PBM and PBEM games in the 90's.
Here you would put the Kingship up for grabs, with each duke of that realm having first option and then if the player leaving did not express an opinion do a random selection from the dukes. If no dukes were up for it, you open it out to a wider but still restricted set of players, finally open it to whoever wants it. You will need a new duke if you choose from that tier, but that's the fairest way to do it.
You keep mentioning PBM and PBEM... you ever play Alamaze?

You have made two very flawed assumptions.
The First, is that you assumed I don't already have raving asshats in my guild.
The Second, is that you assumed I was not one of the raving asshats in my guild.

Not knowing you, I obviously made a mistake by assuming, however, most of the PA's (player associations) I have been a part of will have nothing to do with people that think asshattery is ok. People I know generally want to enjoy the people they choose to spend their recreation time around, and I work towards that in my PA.
But yeah looking at some of your posts, I should have just assumed the other.

For example, Caspian approached the OCE community to change the Hrothi biomes.
Actually, given that they don't have a non-crowd funding source of finance and all the new features I would have thought to simplify the game from a balance point of view. Have one race at the start. Keep things simply as much as possible so that you can ensure your complex design works. Once that works you start messing with alternate races etc.

Just like Chris Robert's, Jeremy seems to regularly double down on feature complexity instead of going the route you suggest.

It is a balance act, on what you can simplify, and what you can't.
And since IIRC, you do programing work, you also know that if you plan to start simple, you need to build the whole system in such a way so that it is a designed and built so that it can be added to easy, which is a whole other aspect of programming and design.
IE: If you start with once race, this also means you need to build the whole game with the idea that other races will exist and be added in later, which brings up things, like the code needs to made in such a way that this is easy and even flexible to make happen. Also, we both know, that if a new race gets added at any later date, players will go crazy for the "next" new race to come out.
As opposed to starting with 3 races and knowing this game will only ever had 3 races, you can build the code to just be those 3 races, and everything built with them involved, and this also makes it clear that new races will not happen.
So it becomes a game and balance act.

Agreed, but this was always a low budget title, and his first MMORPG.
I recall Slap, me and many others challenging Jeremy on the overly ambitious designs vs the funding realities, and we were dismissed with promises of magical new Tech like SpatialOS which would solve everything.
There's a good reason why early cartoon characters were drawn with only 3 fingers, and MMOs like COH didn't really have fingers, more like hands were designed like a mitten.

Was Slap using his typical "I know better than you" posting style to persuade Caspian that I have come to know him for ? Because that could have really been your problem right from the get go.
Personally, just my feels, a game like COE would be a better overall game, with a single Race and Continent to start with, as it would hit the vibe of the early european Throne War style games.
In fact, he could have made the nations a copy of Great Britain, and used that as the core foundation of the game. Given it's an island, he could have simply put in Invisible walls around it when it came to the water areas.
Then added in more Island Nations, like say, something like Iceland, Greenland, or even something more distances like Japan next.
Release the new Nations as a Stand Alone Expansion, and the two could not interact until a year later, giving the new Expansion players time to grow and develop.
Given a lot of the mechanics that are planned, from aging, death, limited resources, and OPC, and everything crafted, It could have been a better set up to isolate like that, get all that working, and then expand.
But.. gonna bet, after reading Slaps "The Way Forward" you all acted like you knew better than he did, and because you backers you were gonna tell JW Caspian, the best way to make his game, which no doubt went over like a fart in a church, and got you all either banned or his shit list.

Almost like that's how they promoted their KS from the get go. While SBS cut off stretch goals early on. They just made up different stretch goals, that no one had ever heard about.
I haven't really followed this game if you can call it that right now. I don't know if it is possible but I would love to see all the peasants band together and destroy everything of anyone that paid a crap of money to buy a title. That would be hilarious. Could you imagine the tears if you could actually destroy a couple thousand dollars worth of crap just to say hey your money means nothing to me.
Wait, wait...We've come to the point in gaming where players can outright buy a top position in a player organization with cash? And other players are so lacking in self respect, they will willingly follow and serve these whales? Well, if it happens in real world politics, I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's happening in games. Still, what a sad state we've reached.

I think most player egos aren't so fragile that it would prevent them playing a game if they enjoy it. Game balance issues notwithstanding.

Yep, Goons require a monthly fee from their members, with officers paying a fee for the "priviledge" of leading.
In all fairness, in the larger goon guilds these can be paid positions, as they are near a full time job.
