Shouldn't there be a rule that you have to finish one crowdfunded project before you abandon it to go raise money for another?

You would think so, but look at CoE.....they pretty much ended up using crowd-funding to do a side project, while swearing they're still working on the game......At the end of the day, there's a reason why these guys rely on the public instead of getting proper backers and the age old excuse of "We want to make a game our way and not dictated to us by publishers" its getting a little thin. At the heart of all of this, its about avoiding accountability. lol kind of reminds me of when the lead guy on Anthem left but swore it was in good hands.....now here we are.

Why? Potential contributors should be researching projects and those involved before any money changes hands and thus be aware of such conduct. They can then choose for themselves if they want to go ahead with their contribution or back away.

    They stole your thunder slap.

Story's already touched a nerve, Tim's updated his Patreon page today with this:

"Updated to add after the MMORPG.com article went live on March 10th, 2021: I'd like to point out, for the record, the rumor going around that we "abandoned" the project is unfounded, and absoutely not true.

While we can't go into details at present, this Patreon post says simply says we are "no longer involved" in the development of the MMORPG.

Wording is important. When we can share the full details, we will, but until then it's important folks not jump to any conclusions or make any assumptions without knowing the facts."

Love the bit about how "wording is important." Guess he never learned the lack of words can speak volumes.

No matter what he says, appearances can be more important than facts, especially if they are viewed as deceiving.

Yeah, but also probably wanting to (6 years getting nowhere will take its toll). I mean, he was the CeO and in control of the company right? So maybe it was not a fight worth taking for him, or maybe he saw himself as a major problem for the project?
Maybe the team or some investor demanded a f2p model to continue the project, which I assume would have been unacceptable for him as lead.
Who knows. We probably have to wait x years for the NDA period to run out.

He seem lto be knowledgable with tech and game design, but lack in public communication skills (too often on the aggressive-defensive side).

It seems the project goes on without him, our own look at this before did question if he still was in charge. Even if that true SoL is a project that is going to take another few years to get of the ground, I am concerned though as to what will be released without the guy who started it all at the helm. Also you do have to question any CF projects he is involved with, but then I question anything CF and never do the likes of CF or pre-orders so for me no change there.

I am not sure putting Slapshot in charge of the sites CF MMO articles would be the best idea, the CF studios would be like Hobbits hiding from a Nazgul, though we would find it very entertaining. :D image

Whatever happened to getting a loan from a bank "...like an adult"? I am thinking those who getting their funding through kickstarter or w/e are trying to escape the responsibility of that funding.
Banks would never lend money to a bunch of randos making a game, way too risky.

There was a point about 2 years ago  when I considered contacting them to invest..  Started to do some research and follow everything available.. Ended up deciding against it  as it became apparent that they spent more time raiding in EQ and other games in addition to board games , than actually making what appeared to be a promising IP on the surface. Hence the extremely slow development and sporadic testing .That being said they have some  nice groundwork and good ideas and we will see if anything comes to fruition  or is worth investing In, in the future.

I remember all those arguments on these very boards with Tim - where he was confronted with the fact that a team of - non-developers has zero chance of making a MMORPG let alone one that's any good.

Tim defended his position and was trying to convince everyone how SoL will be finished, will launch and can survive with 5K players - lol, with basically no money and free dev work.

The dude was either delusional or worse yet he was straight up lying to everyone about the fact that SoL will never launch and is in fact a scam

Here's a thread from march 2020 - where Borghive and DMKano (RIP) - are ripping Renfail a new one over his bullshit - and most everyone else is defending this scam.

    https://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/488008/watch-over-two-hours-of-saga-of-lucimia-in-q-a-live-stream/p3

ChildofShadows, Deleted and others who defended this shit - how you feel now?

Are they defending him or ultimately saying people have the right to spend their money the way they want.

If I were subject to your dictate I wouldn't be a part of all the games I and others backed that actually launched.

And while I do think that if someone asks for money through a crowdfunding program that they need to be transparent and finish what they started before asking for money for other projects (per the post a bit above) I also think people should have the right to give or not give as they see fit.

What it took to get in on alpha was peanuts. I got my money's worth out of it during the month long alpha testing. Some of the funnest times I have had in an MMO in a long time tbh. The game is moving forward still and there is testing every week. They obviously have some legal things going on that prevent them from talking currently, DUH. Don't talk s**t about things you don't know about and for all those debbie downers, don't tell me how to spend my money.

    You missed the point entirely.
It is not about the NEXT guy giving money it is about letting down those who supported what you were selling. If you are just moving on to the next thing then you are not living up to what you were selling in the first place.

How can you research someone's mind in to the future?Every single studio big or small is going to make their project sound like the best thing since sliced cheese.Personally i just use my own knowledge of game design and understand what is possible and what looks like half assed work.Crowd funding is NOT how you build a game, not even mildly close,it is a way to get free money and that is it.
Chris Robert's for example was pitching a great game for 6 million tops,a couple hundred million later and still no sign of completion but LOT'S and lots of ship building going on.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

Wait! He wrote the book on which he based the game around, so they are going to continue a game based on his material? I had a feeling this project was going to fail when I was playing the mess that it was pre-pandemic. I just quit participating because I didn't think it was fun or even playable; It was a mess. I think they had a decent, underlying idea, but they just couldn't implement it into a working game.
