It's entering into early access, which they estimate will take a minimum of 12 months. So, no it's not launching yet but moving further toward it.

As to whether the game is racist, I have no idea as I didn't apply for testing as I felt their application to be so. However my belief it was so is just that. I do not know it for a fact. Even if some of those involved are it doesn't necessarily mean the game itself will be.

It has turn-based tactical combat which although not unique to Wagadu is somewhat rare for MMORPGs. Results are apparently dependent on coordination between team members. I like this kind of combat if done well so I'll probably be checking the game out based on that alone.

I'm curious. What makes you think the game is racist?

Basically in the beta process paperwork/tos they basically said whites need not apply, POC only wanted.

I am paraphrasing here as I do not remember the exact words. That said I really don't care the game looks like complete crap anyways.

A question on their beta application allowed them to determine if the applicant was white. It was certainly a race based question so possibly had racist motivation though I don't know if this was ever established as so.

Regardless, it put me off of applying for their beta as I felt the question inappropriate so was not inclined to indulge their curiosity.

However, none of that has anything to do with the game itself. As I have not played it I have no idea if the game is racist. It seems to have exclusively black characters but that could just be a matter of setting.

One thing my wife taught me was how to disagree.

For example, if she insisted on taking a wrong turn I still support her and don't disagree because being right just isn't worth it there.  Even if I'm proven right I still somehow lose.  Likewise, if I end up being wrong, I lose that way as well.

So with this game, if it is a racist pile of poo that goes down in flames - the fact you pointed it out in advance still somehow makes you a bad person.   If the game succeeds you still lose because you were wrong about its chance to succeed.

There is a reason why old men sit on the front porch and don't say much anymore.

I mean, it kinda just sounds like your wife continually and preemptively shifts blame away from herself and will never let you win an argument under any circumstances. Seems like the only thing you've "learned" is how to get along with a narcissist.

Nice! My birthday! For me "race" is just a demographic information but they should put an option to skip that question.

I can remember when the BBC decided to make the next Doctor Who a woman, they had an article in the Radio Times where they put forward the idea that this was going to be a great success as long as the die hard fans were not chauvinist about it being a woman.

So the series was not out yet, I don't think anyone had even seen a trailer and they were preparing chauvinism as an excuse if the new series was not well received. This is how you do something to support an ideological position and then stick your head in the sand against the possibility it goes pear shaped.

As it turned out the new series was reasonably well received, but it does show you how blinkered the media can be about this sort of thing. Oh and they blamed chauvinism for the mixed reception of course. Fact is the series had had an incredibly long run and the audience already showed signs of fatigue, that in my mind was why it got a mixed reception.

That might have been their official line, but even on the official Dr. Who pages the show got trashed.

Hard to say if the actor can really act as the scripts were just so darn bad.

You'll note not only is she out, but so is the new guy that took over the writing for her season and they brought the old writer back.

Right, and I think we as a society are waking up to this as trust in the media is at an all time low.

As for the game, heck if it was a good game I'd play it.  There is quite a bit of potential here to dive into some different myths and explore different cultures - it actually could be cool learning experience.

A delivery boy simulation wrapped in African themes isn't gonna work for me, though.

Jodie Whittaker's first season in the role of the Doctor was the lowest rated of the modern show to date. Each following season was lower rated than the previous.

Her time as the Doctor not well received.

What they knew I expect is that this was unprecedented for the character so there was a good chance some people wouldn't be happy. Further, that regeneration could cause gender change had just been recently introduced with the Master and was contrary to established lore so long-term fans had already been thrown a curve ball.

It isn't surprising then that they chose to lead off with the argument that those who disliked the change must be chauvinists. It makes for a convenient smokescreen of deflection should anyone critique their choices for reasons other than and also may cause those sensitive to how they are perceived more prone to hold their tongue even if not fond of the changes from that established.

Looking beyond the controversy and beta BS; it might have done better not being an MMO with pvp.

Are you sure they have PvP?

This bit is from their Steam page:

"You can upgrade your village’s buildings and claim more Spirits’ territory, further extending your reach: be careful, if another Village desires the same land, you’ll both have to compete for the Guardian’s favor with gifts!"

That sounds more like competitive PvE where each village concurrently attempts to earn the most favour from an NPC to be declared the victor.

PvP to small group PvE and guild PvP. I would compare it to A Tale in the Desert; which is kinda on life support. There is still a playerbase that is active, but it's very small and takes forever to complete tasks.

Interesting. Both Dofus and Wakfu, also turn-based tactical MMORPGs, have PvP as well so it isn't uncommon for this style of game. I wasn't expecting it in Wagadu for some reason.
