Moscow: A 12-year-old schoolboy died of brain haemorrhage in Russias Ekaterinburg city in the Urals after playing computer games for up to 12 hours a day during his summer holidays, which began last month.
The boy, identified as Sergie, used to play shooting games in a local computer club throughout the day and only went home for food and sleep, a media report said on Tuesday.
Sergei collapsed in front of the computer, showing symptoms of epilepsy, on May 31 and was immediately hospitalised. He died three days later.
Doctors were shocked by the autopsy report which showed extensive brain damage probably due to severe emotional stress in the course of computer game, Noviye Izvestia daily reported. PTI
A bit old news though, since it happened a few months ago, but this guy died of playing fps, at home
How many died so far, three?

And so we see the true dangers of the Hot Coffee mod.
FPS games have always been extremely harzardous IMO. I play one round of Doom and my head starts a spinning. I can't play games like that much, I get bad headaches and such. What I usually play is slow camera moving games. I really think most MMORPG's should consider the camera speed in the game. Setting at sucha fast FPS does cause damage to your brain. As demostrated in this article.
If you don't mind could you post a referrence link?... nevermind..

There is exactlly Zero scientific or medical proof that gaming is in any way shape or form unhealthy for a normal active person. This is nothing more then more negative media hype.
On the contrary there is medical proof that staring at a CRT tube that has poor image quality, and or low refresh rates ( more flicker not necessarly discernable to the naked eye ) Does in fact cause negative health risk's. But to blame this kind of stuff on the game is utterly absurd, and on par with the idiots who could not control their eating sueing the fast food industry because they were obese.
This is unrelated to the deaths in Korea, who died from heart failure due to lack of sleep and proper nutrition.
In this case, the primary blame belongs to the parents who allowed their kid to play for computer games so many hours. Apparently, the kid has epileptic tendencies and the parents didn't bother finding that out.
Betrayal-X, fast-paced games do not cause brain damage to most people. What you describe is close to what is called photosensitive epilepsy, which occurs at one in three and a half thousand of the population. There's also the possibility that your eyes get tired pretty fast, which would cause headaches. I would advise that you consult your doctor about this.

"When people tell me designing a game is easy, I try to get them to design a board game. Most people don't last 5 minutes, the rest rarely last more then a day. The final few realize it's neither fun nor easy."
Lol what did you think it was.
Also to the poster that said it was the fault of the parents, I totally disagree, how were they to know he had epilepsy. Also I would guess epilepsy doesn't always manifest itself in everyone as rolling around on the floor.
The only factor that would have caused his death in this case was the epilepsy. He could have possibly had seizures during his 12 hour binges, which, once again is the parents fault, not the gaming industry's.
First of all, they allowed him to play computer games for 12 hours a day or had no idea of his activities, neither of which shows sufficient care. Secondly, if he suffered from photosensitive epilepsy, he would probably complain to his parents from other activities, like watching television, about headaches.

12 hours a day could be perfectly normal for most teenagers during their school holidays.
Secondly, it doesn't say anywhere he was diagnosed with epilepsy till this event;
"At first the boy was diagnosed with an epileptic seizure"
That sounds like it was the first instance he had been diagnosed with it. And that could have been simply due to whatever happened to his brain during the sessions.
Whenever I feel I played too much... I go to the bar with my friends and drink until I passout. Garunteed 12 hour break at least.

As a side note... normally I talk about the game while at the bar. ;-)

Games are horrid... look at all these crazy people posting on this forum!
Besides mine and several other peoples insane rants on MMORPG.COM there is absolutely no evidence that playing video games can cause "severe brain damage".
Make a difference!
I haven't talked to a doctor about this, I just stay away from games that give me headaches. Simple as that.
If you don't think they cause brain damage, just take a look at some of the games version of The Surgeons General warning. Alot of games are now labeled with these warnings. Been like this for about 3 years as far as I can remember.

12 hours of video gaming a day means you have a serious lack of a life. If you play 12 hours a day you are probably living in your own feces. Who is cleaning up after you? Who makes your meals?
You should shower every morning and put on clothes, not just sit around in your disgusting bathrobe, this should take 25 minutes. Make your bed, straighten up your room and house, 30 minutes being generous. Making breakfast should take you at least 15 minutes and then to eat about 10 and then to clean up at least 5 minutes. Theres 30 minutes for a normal healthy breakfast. Lunch should be about the same, theres another 30 minutes. Dinner should take you 30 to 45 minutes, I'm gonna say 45 minutes for dinner to be eaten and cleaned up. For the sake of all that is good and holy go out and talk to a girl and/or go to the park with her or a movie. Girls should take up at LEAST 3-6 hours of your day depending on how lucky you are. You need 8 hours sleep a night, this is a well known fact and is backed up by scientists that aren't insane.
So on a regular day where you don't have to even work, these activities should take up a minimum of 14-17 hours. There just isn't time for 12 hours of gaming in a proper day! If you played a game for 12 hours in a day then you honestly should take a long hard look at the direction your life is heading. I am not saying this to be a know it all, I'm saying this because I actually give a crap about you.

I swear, Betrayl, you must be a moron or hard up for a ban on first person shooters. Those "Surgeon General Warnings" you so casually refer to are not in fact from the Surgeon General proper but are from the games industry itself. They are there to warn parents and children that people with epilepsy are at risk when playing videogames, not everyone. It's not like the games create epilepsy. The condition can be brought on by television, fireworks, and laser light shows as well. What you have sounds more like motion sickness to me and I would (if I were a doctor, which I'm not) perscribe Dramimine or an alternate method for counteracting the effects of motion sickness. This is caused by the fluids in your ears and the sensitive nerves in your feet telling your brain it's not moving while your eyes register movement. It's not deadly, it's just nauseating.
As for this kid dying, there could be lots of reasons behind it and the article we all read on this forum did not do a convincing job of explaining the rationale behind the judgement. We all know how the media juggernaut works and there is every possibility that the doctors actually said they were unsure but the author of the article just skimmed the report and put it in his own words. It's sad but it's not a health epidemic, fellows and fellow-etes (or whatever female derivative of fellows you choose to place), it's just getting attention now is all.
Our friend from Korea was obviously distrubed. There is no other way to explain that kind of time consuming obssesion with a video game that would cause you to not eat, not sleep, and not go to work. Sergie here obviously had health problems and maybe the video games triggered an epileptic seizure but they did were not the inherent cause of the death.
For those of you who are going to start yapping about how I'm not a doctor and don't know what I'm talking about please visit http://www.nfld.net/epilepsy/laephotosensitive.html and educate yourselves and anyone you believe may be prone to this disorder.
Lets just try to remain positive in the face of this news and pray for the best in concerns to (what I suspect is, if you're on this site) one of our beloved pastimes.
So on your description of "how to live our lives" this would allow 0 to 2 hours of gaming time each day. Do you really think the average MMORPG player plays this little? LMAO
And hey I'll be the first to admit I'm burned out on the genre and do a lot of other things with my time now that I find most games stale and repetive but still usually play more than that when I have free time.
Why not? I know people who spend like 18 hours a day reading forums...

Im Amazed..... NOT!!!
Good for him, he's gone on to a better place (if he believed in 1... personally I just think I die and hopefully get creamated).
At least his last few days were spent doing what he appeared to love.
Who the hell lets their 12 year old sit on an MMOG all day anyways? Man, I had to beg my parents to let me play SimCity when I was younger... they thought it was teaching me to be greedy. Oh how times a changin.
