alot of good talk here =p haha. well just to add in my 2 copper.
Eq- After the Luclin expansion. I wiah they just never touched the thing... but still played for 6 years. Just couldnt let go, kept hoping they would make it better one day... that day never came.
Eq2- Was ok for a while, hit lvl 50, raided everynight. Got kinda boring they only had a handful of raid mobs, and doing 3 raids a night.. yeah gets old, and the loot was attrotious. just a really bad end game experiance and feel, probally cause of the lack of buffs, I still couldnt see how they could make a game that when you reached a high level you couldnt go around buffing newbs, i always thought that was a fin part of games =p.
DaoC- Just was choppy hard to do the controls for me. the guy walekd weird, dont really know how to describe it, but RvR is awesome, but thats all that game was based on =(.
SWG- was playing that game for a while, well as you all know by now, all that is left is, Click Click, BOOM.
Another few let downs where, DDO no pvp come now its DND! they should at least allow the option, make a server of it.
Roma Victor- Seemed like a pretty decent game i would try out until i saw how you can buy the ingame money, and yeah, pass.. Dont need a game of ebayers, no thanks.
City of Heros- There was no content, end of story same missions reworded. lame
City of Vilians- LOL!!!!!! ^^
Lords of the ring Online- was following htis game for a while then i realized, its middle earth no pvp no way to be evil, i mean how much can you do in carebear land?
Hands down, Horizons was the biggest let down in terms of MMORPGS.
It was originally the masterpeice to be of David Allen, a Videogame Visionary. Sadly, he had very little skill in the business department, so he was stabbed in the back and removed from the company, and with him went everything that made the game good. So much was scrapped, changed and raped from the original idea, when it came out, it wasn't anywhere near the game that me a and thousands of others waited patiently for. I used to come home every day and post on the forums, hang out on IRC, all that stuff. After that whole ordeal, I never really follow mmorpgs early in development, and Horizons helped me to get over MMORPGS. They no longer run my life like UO did :P but yea, WoW got me back, but yea, WoW just got me out too.
But hands down, Horizons was going to be the best mmorpg out there, but when it came out, it was pure crap.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
EQ2, Matrix Online, Horizons, Saga of Ryzom, Earth & Beyond. *Sigh* the list seems endless. AC2 as well. All bad, all dead or dying. RIP. I am sure there are some my mind has just blocked out. So much Hype, so little content.
For sure, World of Warcraft, one of the first posters said it: The game feels hollow, and so it does. The mindless grind to acheive relatively nothing wasn't what I wanted to do, I also agree with the fact that EQ2 has gotten MUCH better since it's release, and the PvP will simply be awesome. :P
It wasnt everquest, it was "lets make a game completely different from the first one and use child like game mechanics and our name to sell it"

PLEASE SOE MAKE A CLASSIC EQ SERVER. Shadow of luclin was a prick in EQs side. PoP Was a gun to the face.

just to let you know playing an mmorpg wont get you anything more than grinding will....you can't beat an mmorpg.
Horizons was a HUGE letdown for me. if they made the game the way it was originally intended to be, we would all be talking about how its the best thing to ever happen to MMORPG's.
EQ2 was next. SOE changed and mislead us on what the game while it was in development and promised alot after release that never came. And i agree on everything after Velious (except LDoN) was crap in EQ.
Im holding out hope for Vanguard since the Devs are the guys who made the original EQ the game that it was. WoW is just stale now and i dont see the expansion helping much at all and nothing else out there is giveing off the vibe that it can be an epic immersive game. if this one flops as well then i dont know if im gonna waist any more of my cash on high hopes and no payoff
Definatly Shadowbane for me. That game was in development forever it seemed. And it promised great pvp when there was little to choose from at the time. And it bombed. I have heard it is better now, but it just wasnt finished.
The next was lineage 2. I was pumped on the Anime, and the grind set me free of the game.
WoW. While the world sure could use yet another fantasy mmo, the grind in this game is just off the scale. PvP can be done at lower levels but it's almost pointless to try until you're capped with good items.
Eve. Ok now we're talking. I love science fiction, I love mmo's this should be a blender of awesomeness right? Wrong. The skill system, while nice to see it working while you are "offline", just blew it hell and back. "Wow I've made enough money to buy a ship. Oh wait I can't pilot it yet let me train a skill. Damn, 8 hours until the skill is done um..uh..I guess I could go mine this asteroid while I wait". Gimme a break.
GW (not specifically an MMO). Proven to be falsely advertised, "skill rewarded not time spent" yet a few months shy of a years release time, people are still grinding it out unlocking items and character skills...
SWG. Never played the game before the NGE but from what little I played of the newbie area and stuff it's like they took Jedi Academy and made it into an MMO.
Neocron 2. Never played NC1 and NC2 was a fun game for what I played of it (almost a year). But the total disregard of the community and so few players just really nailed the coffin in this for me. I think it really hit home that the game was going down hill when the put into effect the "Rules of Conduct" for player names. You couldn't use say, a scientific word that isn't obscene like, Penis, in your player name. BUT you could log into the game, and literally walk around the streets viewing pornographic full nude images of women, read NPC speech text that contained profanity, and other stuff. Hypocrisy didn't become them.
I've played a few other MMO's, obviously I didn't really stick with any of them. However at least those, didn't have huge problems that drove me away from it, more so they just didn't suit my tastes. Those above? You couldn't pay me to play most of them let alone force me to pay to be able to play them.
SWG in its NGE stage: The most unique, most diverse and fun game went down the drain.
EQ2: I got an account only for 2 weeks, and i didn't even used that up. It was slow, i had to watch the Loading screen a lot while i was in the city... I also didn't see much community, at least at the low level where i was.
WoW, when i reliazed it was going to be casual up to 60 and then crazy item grind in instances and even more let down was that blizzard is planning to take eq way in next expansion and add new levels to grind and probably new high level items to grind.
EQ2.Pointles cash in. Dreary ,grey, brown, boring, un-solo friendly, no community, feels sluggish. Souless.
BTW the grind in WoW is laughable tbh.If you have a problem lvling in WoW and find the grind bad then perhaps mmos arent for you lol. You can lvl without any grind at all and doing JUST quests. My wife did that 1-60.
WoW post 60 should be renamed something else cause its a different game annoyingly.
SWG I was playing in the betas. I enjoyed it and I enjoyed it on release (for a while).
EQ2 (another one I close betad) was exactly what I expected, no complaints there. Just not my sort of game.
EVE (another one..) I suppose I was dissapointed with. Although I played it for a fair while, it was never what I was hoping for. The descriptions pre-release made it sound, well, different.
Planetside I think missed the boat on some counts, also a shame..
Ahh ya know I think I'd have to add Shadowbane in there also. It had so much potential but just failed to deliver.
As for DDO, I was disappointed in the mechanics durnig the stress test as well, but I'm hoping they use the feedback provided and make some needed improvements.

The bigges disappointment was what SOE did to SWG with the NGE. But the biggest letdown was EQ2, not a terrible game but I had high hopes for it.

Of the ones I've played... EQ2

NOW to what i'm looking FORWARD TOO.
Vanguard:SoH Looks like a great game all around, no open PvP but they may implement dueling so im all about that, just for fun factor.
Pirates of the burning Seas- Seems like a new idea of a game, kinda breaks the fantasy roles of other mmo's. thats about it.
Eq2 for sure.

Shadowbane to me was by far my biggest let down. Being a PVPer myself, Shadowbane was supposed to be me mecca.
Now... It's just a bad memory. Shadowbane did serve a purpose though. It made me realize not to give my hopes up for new MMORPG's.
Me.

Shadowbane.
So many have failed, I cannot pick just one:

Matrix Online. Such a letdown with a stupid fighting system.
SWG

D&D Online - played beta and will not buy at release, highly disappointed with the mechanics.
Matrix Online - played a week after launch and canceled.
Final Fantasy Online - Didn't play through the first month.

Paks
WoW I'd say... The way they just ignore their players in some ways are shamefull....
