Looking for advice on picking a new game to play

karter64karter64 Member UncommonPosts: 96

I have played two online games, Asherons Call and World of Warcraft, and am looking for a new game to play. I have tried Eve and Anarchy Online on a trial basis but found I just don't care much for the space genre.

A basic premise for a game I might play are;

Strong PVE,  I don't care about PVP and I won't play a game where PVP is required (aka AC-Darktide).

Good player development system, with multiple routes for a player to choose in player adavancement, (WoW is way to limited in that area)

A good stroyline is nice, as well as a player driven economy. Lots of quest to do (Wow had many quests that I consider more like tasks or chores. )

Will be able to run on a lower end machine ( 1.8ghz, 700meg ram, nvidia 5700 card ) which I believe eliminates everquest.

I have no problem with pay to play and buying a boxed game, but it must have a downloadable demo that I can play before commiting any money to it. There is just too much junk hanging out to buy without trying.

I like a death penalty (no real penalty in WoW is lame, but I didn't care for lugging around a pack of death items in AC either.)

So if anyone has any suggestions they wil be much appreciated.

And, on a side note, what the heck does FTW stand for?

If you don't like WoW and you're a carebear... then I don't really know what else is out there. The current game selection is horrible at best.

Guildwars is your best bet in my opinion.

You might try Ultima Online. PVP isn't really a requisite part of the game, the economy is almost entirely player-driven, and it has a flexible skill system with pretty much limitless advancement paths. Can't tell you a lot on the quests, but believe me, the trade crafts should be more than enough to occupy you for quite some time. Of course, it's one of those games...once you're bored with it, you are *bored* of it, but until that point, it's pretty good.

Bingo. It keeps getting worse, too. FTW means for the win. It's dork talk basically.

    And?

Theres is only one story mission in the game that requires PVP and thats just a simple one at the beginning. You can competly ignore it after that if you want to.

Ok from what you said, you will probably like to try Ryzom.

It is downloadable and has a 7 day free trial before you have to pay. It focuses in PvE but does have optional PvP (not essential to get into if you wish to play). It has a superb storyline and won the best storyline award in the recent mmorpg.com player awards. From the sounds of your system it should run fine, although not at full graphics granted.

The economy is player driven, all decent items are player crafted from materials you can harvest or loot from monsters. Mobs don't drop swords etc.

As for community its superb, next to zero leet chat and a good % of the community engages in RP. There are a load of RP storyline events too, and PvE invasions with the players vs thousands of mobs at a time.

The only real missing thing from what you want that I can see is the lack of real quests. There are missions, but they are limited in variety and are mainly used for gaining fame with factions, and there are several rite quests which grant you rewards for finishing them, however these are limited.

However, saying that Ryzom is not a quest driven game, most players find they have pleanty to do anyway, and Ryzom Ring is coming up soon. This will allow for players to make their own scenarios/quests etc for others to play very easily.

As for the skill system it is very flexible, no defined classes, you can level any skill you wish, it just takes longer to do more :) There are over 11,000 levels in the game, so theres no short supply if you are into that sort of thing :)

Its definatly worth a try. My main advice - don't judge it by the refugee isles, they are barron as people leave for the mainland quickly a lot of the time. As a result most players are on the mainland and it may not hurt for you to go there as soon as you pick up the basic controls :)

    I hope that helps.

Well, Kibs basically covered it so...

Chalk up one more vote for Ryzom.

Check out the forums, read up on the story and lore, then create a 7 day free trial. If you choose the cash option when signing up you don't have to enter any credit card info or fill out anything extra. You can change to credit card payment anytime you want.

Thanks for the honest replies so far, sounds like Ultima and Ryzom are ones to look into.

I will look at Guild Wars also, but I have read in player reviews that it is mostly instances and I am not a big fan of those.

And for the one flamer, I don't pk because I am admittedly a very lousey player. I just don't have the time to develop great skills on a keyboard or mouse that would enable me to compete adequately with the likes of you. So get over it.
