I played the game since it was released, and I had periods where I just stopped playing, and then I would start playing again. This last period was the worst, and I waited on the game, thinking if they released a new server, I might be able to recapture the fun of the game. Well, they did release new servers, and I got to about level 7 with a new, different kind of character, and then I realized I was playing the exact same game I've been playing since this game was released. I didn't want to get to 60. I didn't want to raid. I didn't even want to play.
So I cancelled my account two days ago. Unlike others, it wasn't a momentous decision where I want the world to worship my decision and then to reconsider their place in the grand scheme of things. I'm not ranting that I hate all things Blizzard and this is my final redemption upon their morbid souls. No, I grew out of the game, and I decided to move on.
Unlike others, I'm glad so many people are still enjoying the game. I was there once, and I truly enjoyed that experience. For those that may never tire of the game, I envy you and don't criticize you in any way, shape or form.
The game is kind of like an all star baseball game. It doesn't do anything new, but it makes everything old feel new, and that was quite an accomplishment in the hands of Blizzard. I'm not even a Blizzard fan; this is the ONLY game aside from the original Diablo (not the sequel) that I enjoyed from them. Yeah, I'm different, but it just means they had to jump through some higher hoops with me to please me with WoW, and I think, for the most part, they succeeded.
Unfortunately, there really isn't another game to turn to right now. I restarted EQ (the original) a few weeks ago and played a bit in that, but it was more like having lunch with an old girlfriend than a new experience. It was fun to run around the old lands again, even if there was no one in those lands to run around with.
This leaves me looking towards the future, and it's somewhat lacking as almost ZERO games offer anything as immersive and fun (not original, but fun) as Blizzard's WoW did at one point. People talk about Vanguard and other such games, and I still see further variations to everything we've seen done before. There are so many dynamic concepts that can be attempted, but so few seem to be trying to capture that nuance.
Fortunately, Oblivion was released, and I started up on that last night. I'm amazed at how well done it is, even though I loved Morrowind (after forcing myself to play it the second time...didn't catch on with me the first time).
As I leave, I don't do what I've done with other games and offer advice on how the game can be improved, because I think WoW is doing everything right, for the game that it is. I haven't been comfortable saying that about too many other games.
To everyone, I wish you great fortune as you continue this game and hope I run into you in other games in the future.
I guess my sole purpose in this post is to actually write a goodbye post that doesn't end up being an "I hated the game" or "I'm angry at the developers" post because it's not always like that. Some of us will move on, content that the game was worth its weight in gold during the time we played it.

If more people had your approach Sarbornm, this site in general would be a better place. You've enjoyed a game for a while, and when it came to an end you simply canceled your account. No big momentous decision, like you said.
I'm convinced that there are at least 2 people who realize MMOs are just games. ^_^

So the candles around my WoW cd's is a bad thing???

Lol. Probably not as bad as Shayde's voodoo doll of Smedley.

sucha longwinded post for some1 not wantin to make a big deal
Professor Hubert Farnsworth - That question is less stupid but, you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.
You could always go to Star Wars Galaxies... they've done wonders with that game, I hear.
I don't see what the back slapping is about.
He cancelled WoW for the same reason most people post about. 1-59 is great, 60 blows. He said as much.

I think you missed the point ...

Agreed. Sarbornm experience isn't that unique; probably the same people who quit are also playing Oblivion too. . The Burning Crusade expansion is 4 months away and I am sure Blizzard will get stick for that, it must be borne in mind that this is Blizzards first mmorpg, something that tends to get forgotten about in all the hype. (And the fact it is the biggest selling game, let alone mmorpg, of all time). One of the Blizzards producers said the game has potential for a minimum of 10 years, will we be seeing queues like this then .
I enjoyed my experience too and my point is that it is a good mmorpg for the journey (and Blizzard will learn a lot from their 1st mmorpg) and that if the expansion came out sooner I doubt that I would have made the peon cry.
No annoying animated GIF here!
I canceled my WoW account a while ago, though in my opinion it's the most well-made MMO I've ever played. I'd go so far as to say that it's the best MMO out there.
I don't like having to sit 10 hours waiting for an item that might drop which I might have a chance at getting over 4 other people that want the same thing. (not a comment on WoW, a comment on raiding in general). I enjoy raids where you accomplish something fun like a cool quest or mini-event, but farming instances just ain't fun for me. So not long after I hit 60 I too canceled my account.
I do plan to go back if the 2nd race for the expansion is Pandaren, but all in all I too just feel like I've played the game, 'beat it' so to speak, and moved on.
Thanks for the memories WoW, good times.

I don't know what all the fuss is about either. I played for less than a month, and I simply found the game dull. I also played EQ1 twice, both times cancelling within a month.
I'm a hardcore gamer, but these games are like glorified chatrooms. No purpose, no advancement, nothing to keep you hooked. 1 is the same as 2, 2 is the same as 3, the only difference I could ever see is that you may pick up slightly different or improved skill sets, and weapons. Essentially you are a more powerful version of level 1, at level 60? Am I right? I prefer to play games that reward me directly with new maps, new objectives, etc. Perhaps this is redundant as most people play through to 60 and then get tired of it, but I was tired pretty quickly.
Plus the downtime. If I had called blizzard would they have reimbursed me? I hope so. Service companies have a responsibility to maintain acceptable standards of accessibility. In Canada where I live this is regulated by law. Too bad the CRTC doesn't regulate MMORPG's
