How many gamers work in the computer industry?

karter64karter64 Member UncommonPosts: 96

From reading the various posts made throughout the forums on MMORPG.COM, it's fairly apparent that there are quite a few intelligent people out there. So I was wondering how many gamers that post here actually work in the computer industry such as programmers, IT people, reapair and sales? ( or for the youngun's, if you want to work in the computer field ).

I think this post may be more suited for the developer's corner, but I thought it would get more response here. If someone wants to make a poll, that would be neat too. ( Ok I obviously don't deal with computers at work )

I am a game designer for a company...not versed in any form of RPG, but still, that is great.  High school teacher graduate and 2 years of teaching experience.

I am a chronic freak even by the company standard, yet I am prolly the most clueless guy around when it come to computer stuff with the exception of the administration staff...well...prolly!   They got lot of funny running gags about: 'Sure, for you it is a few words to change in the document, but...'  You can't change documents after a point without consulting the whole team!  And sometimes, it is the guy doing something you judge FAR from the change that see a problem...team work!

Lot of great peoples at work!  Many aren't gamers however, it is a job for them, not a pass time!  I will admit that when I join I was kinda afraid, I was afraid that it will deter on my will to play games...but that will to play, desire...is impervious to whatever job.  If I can't play at least 50 hours (60-80 ideally), I start going all wrong...add 32 hours of working...and well...let's say I have no other life!    But RL is overated anyway!

There are obviously lot of folks working in the gaming industry around here...but most are less likely to chat, talk or whatever...they bring facts, info, nice stuff...let's just say I have 0 wisdom on this topic and I enjoy chatting in frenglish!

I work for a game company.

Almost everybody in the studio is a gamer.  There are a few non-gamers, but almost all of us play MMOs.

Most of the people in quality game companies are gamers. If they wheren't they wouldn't be making quality games

I've just graduated with a Computer Science MSc (conversion course) and am trying to get a job in the industry! <sigh>....hopefully someone will see fit to employ me soon. If not, I fear I'm gonna have to go back to call centres and people management :)

I interned with a company as an artist/animator but ultimately decided to go back to school to get some more foundational knowledge =)  It's stressful but fun, especially when you walk into stores like bestbuy and EB and see the game you helped make on the shelf.

I am a wireless network engineer, and technical manager for an ISP. It's a small company, I only have about 200 wireless clients, so I also handle a fair amount of their PC maintenance / repair and interior network needs. I really enjoy my job, but like a few others have said, I'd give just about anything to be working in the gaming industry. :)

    Public school teacher.

I wrestle punk middle schoolers all day.  I listen in to what they play, find out what their characters names are and which servers they're on, then go kill them online for revenge.

And they have no idea it was me.

    Mwuhahahahahaha!!!!

Thanks for all the replies (and no flames). I guess I framed the question in a way that only the computer people would reply. I was trying to get a feel for the rough percentage of people that actively work with computers then go home and play on them, vs those like myself who swing a hammer all day then go home and play games. No particular reason why, just curious.

Embedded software engineer at a defese company. Link-11 crypto stuff, specialized real time operating systems, etc. They don't let me to work on the really fun stuff though, because I'm new, young and haven't obtained clearance yet. Not really my cup of tea, that's why I started learning DirectX API

I worked for gateway for 5 years. I built them,  loaded the software, troubleshooting and did quality control during my tour of duty. Just finished an Associates degeree in networking/IT and I am getting ready to go to a university to get a bachelors degree in Computer Science. Then I'll work with PCs again. Or I'd certainly hope I do after the amount of money I'm spending to not work in a factory.

Actually Karter :)  That's a good question to ask.  A LOT of people who work on computers every day play games but you'd be surprised how many want absolutely nothing to do with a computer when they get home.

I even know a couple PC tech folks who refuse to even own a computer because they get so sick of looking at them at work.....  If you didn't know where they worked you would think they were computer phobic :)

The ones who avoid computers after work are in the minority, however.  Typically if you don't use one regularly you get rusty as hell.   Matter of fact most of us who troubleshoot networks have our own test networks at home that we mess with to see what we can break (and fix) when we try different things.

Interesting.  I worked for Gateway from 1996 to 2002 in their IT Department.  Well.. ok I worked for Gateway from 1996 to 1999 when they outsourced us :)  Then I worked for Lockheed Martin on the Gateway project until Gateway pretty much collapsed.   Which facility were you at?  Hampton, North Sioux or Sioux Falls?

I spent 15 years in IT for a Pharma company.  I supported HP1000's , hp/ux systems and IBM AS/400's.  Finally had enough of users complaints and always being the target when a system went down.

And yes I am an avid gamer.  I have played over 15 mmo's.

Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.
