Any games with more of a "mystery" to solve?

sarbonnsarbonn Member UncommonPosts: 119

I am looking for something of a more mysterious nature, and I'm curious if there's anything out there that does this. (I had a much better post, but my connection ate it, so I'm going to try to recreate it again).

Whenever I play an MMORPG, there always seems to be a possibility of a great mysterious story that never actually happens. Like in UO, I kept imagining that the game might incorporate an adventure of exploration that might tell a backstory of the avatar as you investigate further. That never happened. In Eve Online, I kept thinking that 0,0 space might hold a clue to the great gate that brought us all to this new area, and that finding it would launch a whole new investigation on the secrets of the universe. Never happened. I keep getting that feeling in all of the games I play, but it never seems to happen.

So, I'm curious if anyone knows games that attempt to do this, and I just missed them or I don't know about them. Or any on the radar for the future?

    MYST ?

Myst is not an MMORPG, which is why I posted this on a site called MMORPG.com. Nor is it the kind of mystery I'm referring to. It's a puzzle game that has a mystery backstory.

I have NO DESIRE for a single player game. There are tons of those with mysteries. Not what I'm seeking.

I guess you'll just have to use your imagination then.  Maybe you could create an avatar called Matlock or Columbo.  Then  you could roleplay that you are a crime solver.

It will be tough for you I imagine.

In case, how long would anything remain a mystery? With thousands of players tackling any given dilemma's, its lifetime would be measured in hours.

But it only hinders the people that rely on strategy guides or web sites for their information about a game. There are a lot of people who play games blindly, forging their own road forward. You just don't from them that much because they're not on web sites talking about the game.

I can roleplay alone very well. For $200 I can roleplay with a woman. Oh wait, that's a different story. What I mean to say is that my desire for a game's mystery precludes creating a character who roleplays an investigator when there are no mysteries to investigate in the first place. It's like creating a dragonslayer in The Sims Online. Great character, but doesn't do you much good if there are no dragons.

Maybe UruLive would have something to offer you if you're into solving intricate mysteries. The storyline, world, and all the roleplay centers on discovery of ancient secrets, hidden worlds, and the solution of puzzles. The online version of the game was cancelled a couple years ago, but it's now being ressurected by a new publisher.

There is a mystery around my favourite game: The Saga of Ryzom. Why were the homins brought to the planet, who is the Karavan, etc.. lots of good stuff for the saga. Unfortunately, the story has stalled for quite some time now. I hope it will pick up speed as the addon Ryzom Ring is released and used by GMs.

According to the devs they're going to try to do it in the Chronicles of Spellborn. The game should have quite a few secrets hidden in it that sometimes just give small clues about the story, but they're planning to add some big ones that will chance the world in some way as well. The biggest mysteries will only be able too be solved once, though they should once in a while new ones in patches. There'll also be some bosses that can only be killed once.

I don't actually have any experience with it, but I remembered reading something about one of Simutronics' games while doing research on Hero's Journey. Apparently, it's a modern-day Caribbean island vacation spot with mysteries and roleplaying, it's online, and it's multiplayer (possibly "massively" so). It's also text-based, if that's an issue for you, but it might be something you'd be interested in. Here's a link I found for it: Modus Operandi

I think there was a link for forums on the page, so you might check those out just to get a better idea of what the strengths and weaknesses of the game are. As I said, I have no experience with the game (or any of Simu's games), so a bit of research would probably be a good idea. It did sound like a pretty close match for your interests, though. Good luck!

They used to, but those meddling kids kept solving them. Damn the burnout, damn the dog, and damn the snacks.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

    HaHaHa, Columbo!

I know what you mean Sarbonn, but shit developers can't even make MMOGs of the same quality as single player games, let alone have cool things like mysteries.

Not since Earth and Beyond has there been a game where there was a mystery to be solved.

Lots of games have really great storyline parts that would make awesome mysteries to be solved.

EQ2: Who really are the Ratonga? Where did they come from? What's up with the mark on their chests.
Instead they come up with stupid crap like faries that are being hurt by bad people.

Saga of Ryzom: Who are the Karavan? Who are the Kami? Who really are the Homins? What is the Goo?
So many mysteries. Instead the story just sits on a website.

Eve: Who are the Jove? What are they all about?
Instead they just act as if they really aren't even part of the game universe.

*comes out of lurk mode briefly*

Ryzom...I know you already tried it Sarbonn, but you didn't try it for very long. :)

IMO, the story is as present and living ingame as you make it. RP, attend events (both official and player-run), etc., and the story is very much there. And it is evolving...

But it won't jump right out at you and take you on a flying carpet ride. You have to help weave the carpet. ;)

Also, Uru Live has some mystery of the ancient-mysterious-dead-civilization-with-abandoned-underground-city-and-other-worlds-linked-to-via-books and modern-intrigue-and-politics type.
