What do you look for in an MMO?

What do you look for when picking out an MMO game?

Graphics?

Gameplay?

Customization?

Other?

Curious to see what others look for.

I look for a world I can impact.  Knowing when I leave the world or the game entirely, something of me is there for others.  No game does that for me yet  :(

I don't hardly play any MMOS anymore anyway.

The only mmo i really play is FFXI and people on here want to beat the hell out of you with a stick for that.

    Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
    Neptus - WoW - Detheroc

A full complete world that players can somehow impact. (no "zones",  "maps" or pre-chew specific areas I need to go to. Open and free roaming. (that rules out almost all new MMO's)

Somewhat open ended gameplay without being lead by the nose like a console game. Let me pick what to do. If I want close ended gameplay I can play PS or Xbox game.

Grind makes no difference as they all have it HOWEVER the gameplay and quality of content a primary concern.

Kill task are unexeptable in my opinion for the next wave of MMO's thats about to release. If there is a heavy reliance on Kill Task it will mark the game as a "piece of Shit" in my book.

Technical competence/quality - something most western MMO's are lacking in. Almost all MMO's are released incomplete, buggy and broken. At this point its unexeptable.

My message to MMO companies ---Finish the f*cking game before you release it is all I have to say. Don't make me pay for 6 months to year while you finish/revamp the game

3 things that I look at in an mmo that are the MOST important to me:

    1. Character customization (I want to have multiple options to play my character make that character unique)

    2. PvP (It is a MUST and i much prefer open no holds bared pvp)

    3. Community (It has to have players and after playing WOW, I now expect my MMOs to be increadably dense)

    1) Skill-based.

    2) Sandbox.

    3)Voluntary PVP

    4) No kill/loot/repeat model

    5) Not playing with 3 million whiny 12 yr olds and 3 million chinese farmers

Actually there is no such thing as a mmo without grinding... it just depends on how fun it is... for instance on wow the grind is overlayed with a bunch of dungeon quests and such that for me at least help the grind go by quicker. ALthough somthing like Lineage is so boring anyway that the grind feels much more horrible.

But there are game that do make the grind less of a job... And dont give me an example of like guild wars thats not an mmorpg thats an mmopvp

What i look for in a mmo is somthing that will keep me busy. I absolutly loved SWG back in the pre-cu days just because well there was so many ways to explore the galaxies. I mean you could be a cook and open up ur own bar or be a mayor of your own town, open up a theatere and put on shows, dance, hunt jedi as a bounty hunter, open up your own shopping center/mall , Make bioengeneerd animals, raise and tame creatures, go camping in the wilderness stalking diffrent missions with ur friends, go into outerspace and do some sweet dog fights, or just float around in ur yahte and hang out, make ur own games up, speeder bike racing, strait up killing with all sorts of diffrent class trees, i even thought the GCW was pretty good being able to go as a guild or a group and blow up outposts set in towns and killing a bunch of rebs or stormies.

Everything in that game kept me playing, usually in an mmo i play for a month or 2 and get bored then leave. With somthing like SWG pre-CU it would keep me subscribed for a year or 2 before i would get bored of whatever the 1000's of diffrent things i could do... just the sheer magnitude of the game ... thats somthing i like having a huge customizable options being able to have , look , and do whatever i want!
  • 1) Sci-Fi, but not outer space.

    2) Graphics (I'm somewhat forgiving of games that don't have the best graphics IF it's an awesome game otherwise)

    3) Character customization (this is a must have)

    4) Solo content (this is a must have)

    5) Small group content

    6) AI

i totally agree... an mmo thats somewhat like a "grand theft auto" game where you can choose to do the quests or you can choose to do whatever you want... and also an mmo thats based on the current world, most mmo's are based either on the past worlds or future worlds, very few are based on the present (and most of them suck)... and oh, i hate grinding too

What I look for in a MMO:

    Customization (Character and decent UI)

Default UI must be tollerable (Unlike FFXI)

Community (a significant role in me sticking to a game)

Graphics (Call me shallow, but graphics are very important to me, I like being immersed into a game I play, and I like prettyness lol)

Content (Must have a decent amount and be added to frequently (atleast by the year)

    Choices (General...Classes, Races..etc)

Environment (Explorable to a decent degree, Attractive..etc)

I'm looking for orginality. By this I mean bouth ingame adventuring as well as the ability to make an original looking character skill wise as well as looks.

I want the ability to do lots of different things quest/adventures. They have to be very different from eachother giving me more variation in the game ensuring I do not get bored.

House. I like the ability to have a home, and decorate it with awards from my adventures (like in EQ2).

No grind. This is a hard one, because most MMO games you get XP for each kill. So the grind will allways be there. But maybe they can find a way to level out the nessisity to be the highest lvl, and give the same joy and awarding items for all levels?

Graphics. Yes this is important. Since I love to just go out and adventure out in the world I like my view to be eyecandy, and a joy.

Thats what I can think of right now at least.

I guess what I'm looking for is a "third way" between the on-rails experience of a game like WoW and CoX and a complete make-your-own-fun sandbox like Eve or UO.  Good luck to me.
