Do you pick Humans?

I ilke the tallest character, whatever race. It's really about my perspective of view in first person.

If you run up  a hill with a small character, you just see the hill, complete grass, unless you look up. I dont' like to have to look up so often. Even if you go up stairs with a short character you have to look up, or you just see stairs.

Taller characters have to look down to see where their feet are sometimes, but it's less often.

So, yes a human, if I can make it tall, but another race if it's even taller.

Yeah. They're usually the most respected (or at least, the ones in the least sucky position).

Elves are often few, dwindling, dying, though skilled in combat and art and whatnot.

Dwarves are often overlooked, ignored, laughed at, or disliked because they smell like beer and their women make me claw my eyes out.

Gnomes - see Dwarves above, except that they often get punted (and rightly so!) by awesome cow-races.

Humans are usually kind of in the middle, able to become almost anything, strong, enduring, and loyal. Even if the game has humanity on the brink of extinction, they'll still be more versatile and capable than other races. At least, that's how I've seen it in the games I play.

Dark Elf, if impossible any other sort of Elf.

No Dorfs, Gnomes or other shorty races, no friggin humans either.

I try to pick human but some times they just don't have the stats or skill for the job or skills I want to use. I hate it when I have to pick a feminine Elf to be optimal for the job or skill set I want to use lol.

So Human when it's a viable option, what I have to when it's not.

Agreed... I hate classes specific on races or gender, unless the lore EXPLICITY, UNEQUIVOCALLY, and UNDENIABLY states that it must be so. Such as Witch Elves in WAR. Even if that's the case, I'd rather devs avoid that class altogether.

And to re-emphasize my earlier post, GOOOO HUMANS!!!

Humans or rather close to them.

I find it very dificult to play Druid forms or races like Taurons, Goblins, etc.

Some races I really dispise like High Elves or Skaven etc ...

Playing an undead is the absolute frontier for me.

Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.

I don't prefer, and I don't despise Human for a Race in an RPG.

The capital H and R are used deliberately because this kind of creature in most MMORPGs is (according to whatever The Story may be) as fantastical, as different from the mundane, as alien in its way as all the myriad of Elf kinds, Dwarves and other Shorties, Big Uglies, and Other are when compared to the RL species to which all players belong. The baked-in differences are only, at best, more subtle. If nothing else, I look around and the heroic Human-oid type that is the standard avatar for the Race in most games is notably rare in Real Life.

Insightful guildmates past have commented truthfully (and played out the best examples of which I know, to prove it) that to adopt a "human" persona not your own and roleplay it, or to try to simulate a human but alien society and belief system can be more of a challenge to the imagination than it is to play pretend at being something else entirely. Often, after all, everyone knows how a ____ (fill in name of non-Human Race) is supposed to act.

If the differences are only in pixels, then it hardly matters, and can be more of a challenge (and therefore, in some sense, more fun) to build a useful, powerful (and possibly colourful) character out of vanilla humanity.

If the lore, setting, rationale, plot, theme, possibilities and potential victory conditions are a lot different than real life, then to assume the r

Maybe it's not wanting more of the usual, or maybe it's that their innate abilities are always so bland, but I just never seem to play them in any MMO I play (unless it's the only option, ie. Fallen Earth).

    Only when they are ripe.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Normally I pick Dwarfs and Dark Elfs.

Love using Dwarfs for my warrior class and Dark Elfs for my Necromancer class.

Never liked picking humans because, I play one on TV everyday.  Wait what? never mind.

WOOHOO....I give you a score of 10 for coming up with a question that isn't controversial! ;)

Myself, I never ever play humans (if there is ANY other option). LOL  I figure...I'm well-versed at "playing" a human, and it doesn't take much imagination for me, therefore, to "be" one. ;)

I generally gravitate to anything that is NOT lizard-like, troll-ish races (they're ugly), or alien-types (ala EQ2 erudites or WoW draeni....gross). Other than those "rules" I have.....it varies by game.

In WoW I prefered all the Horde races (except trolls), with the exception of liking the Alliance gnomes. I'm sorry...but those little fuckers are CUTE, and I don't care if people disagree with me. =D

In EQ2 I love the ratonga and the elves (they are nothing like WoW elves), but of the elves, I prefer the wood elves. I do NOT like EQ2 gnomes, but the halflings are cute little hobbity types that I find endearing.

In all other games....and this I have found to be true pretty much across the board for me....I always choose SHORTER races. This is psychologically interesting to me, because in RL I'm an AMAZON at 6 feet tall and female. I always loathed being tall. It was not fun at any point in my life. In high school I was always taller than all the boys and that sucked. As an adult..having long legs has attracted some unwanted attention from men in bars...ugh. But it's not AS bad as an adult, although....I would still prefer being short if I had the option.  SO...in games....I DO have the option, therefore....

    SHORTER races.

I have to say though....I loved my male Tauren warrior in WoW...because well...Taurens are just sexy mothafuckas. =D (So I guess I like COW races too.... O.o ....maybe I need to talk to my therapist about all this).

Just about every MMO has the same generic description of humans.

'Humans are a well rounded race, but do not have any extraordinary skills compaired to the other generic races of our generic MMO.'

This pretty much somes up why I don't play them. I want those extra funky skills from other races dammit image

I would nearly never play a human if other races are offered. I tend toward the darker side of races/classes.

I always play dwarven folk good or evil. (I betrayed to shadowknight in Everquest 2 and loved my champion in LOTRO)

They're often quoted as ugly but that's mostly from a societal brainwashed perspective.  Their beards, stature, and strength make them a handsome people.

They're great craftsman of metals and builders of underground civilizations.  The underground can be an explorer's paradise and a beautiful place.  Dwarves deserve praise for their quick learning, uniqueness, and technical ingenuity.

I rarely play elves or party with them. (WoW blood elf and EQ2 Dark Elf) One high elf in EQ2 is the sole experience of an acceptably attitude player, while others have lacked kindness and loyalty.

Although loving LOTR lore, the superman elf lore comes off to me as ridiculous.  The lore already has Maiar for powerful beings.  The generic frail elf is the counter, I suppose, but doesn't sufficiently bring balance.

Every other race I've a neutral stance.  I will say though humans have been gimped, for me, since my AC2 defender beginning.  A human warrior in WoW was also played by me.

i rarely pick humans but for what ever reasons most games i played they look the worst. usually dark elves if available, usually stay away form the short races but there have been a few i liked. Raki from Vanguard my favorite short race, also liked frogloks in eq2 (froglok monks have the BEST animations).

i did like the humans in Conan probably one of the only humans i liked.

My favorite race from any game is the Tauren from WoW. Minotaurs are fucking awesome! Wish more games had them as playable races. Orks are also cool, but i dont really like the Hulk orks they got in wow, the LoTR orks/uruk hai are much cooler.

I dont mind playing humans though, they are ok but its abit boring imo.

But yea, i like Big races like the tauren and ork type races.

Wish more games had demons/werewolfes and stuff like that for races. Its all about humans, elves and dwarfs these days it seems ><

Hmm this is an interesting thread.

I must say I often do play Humans, maybe it's because I enjoy the typical medieval fantasy setting and find the other races a bit incongruous to that. However I have played a Dwarf in LotRO as I adore their lore. I also played an Elf in Lineage 2 - I suppose I could more accurately say I play the races that are the most normal - so not the beast races ect.

Alot of my decisions on which race to choose often is influenced by the way they stand.

I can not abide by races or even classes that stand hunched over like most of the horde races in WoW and the necromancer class in Guildwars to name but a few. I like my characters to stand straight and tall and look like a hero, maybe thats why I play Humans alot - they just kinda fit the bill.

I guess i tend to play Human in every game i play... only reason i can figure is I am Human but none of this exists in RL... so lets make a human character in a place where this stuff does exist... or something like that.... yep after writing that i dont think i can get any geeker

I like the unique races. Sylvari FTW.

Past: Can never go back to Wow.
    Present: Nothing interesting out.
    Future: Looking forward to GW2.

In WoW play a troll, they're silly and all, but it really grew on me.

For other games I would look for some more special look, though it depend on style. If I can help it I will avoid playing as an elf, I dislike elfs; something about the pointy eared scum I just can't stand.

Human or elf, whichever is the better looking one.  Stats also influence me but no so much as appearance.

  • scuubeedooscuubeedoo Member Posts: 458

I try to avoid humans and furry races. I usually go for the ugly ones like orcs, ogres, dwarves.
