Nah. I like to place myself as the avatar for immersion and that just can't happen when I've got a set of C's.

There have been a billion posts and multiple psych articles published on the subject. The people with real problems are the one's that play elves....

People put way too much thought into this.  I play both sexes in game, and it doesn't have anything at all to do with sexual preference or some attraction to pixels.  I build my avatars with a theme in mind, and some themes are better suited for female roles while others are male.  For example, a dark sorceress is very different from a dashing hero.  It just depends on my mood and what effect I'm going for.

Honestly, I can't imagine being so up tight or insecure that playing a character in a game could call some part of my manhood into question.  Just the idea is both funny and sad at the same time.

I only play female characters. If the game is gender limited based on class, I'll only play a class that has Female characters, even if it's a class I don't want to play at all.

If the game doesn't offer Female characters, then 99% of the time I won't play it. The only exception to this list is a few RPGs that have a male protaganist.

The same can be said about any Sonic game that doesn't feature Tails as a playable character. I didn't even buy Super Smash Bros. Brawl because it had Sonic in it but not Tails.

well you culd always make a game where if you pick a female you get more dextarity but if you play a male you get more str. I mean I really wanna see then which one people would pick... cause it would then pick the stat people into the mix as well.

It would also cause various 'zomg this is so stereotypical, burn it!' rants. No western developer would take the risk. Maybe some korean one will, they already have boob sliders so they can't claim  the moral high ground about their depiction of women in their game!

I usually have a Male and Female character in most games. If you are only allowed one character however, I play a female simply because most of the male customization options are too corny, and stale compared to the sexy female avatar, lol. :P

I actualy can say exactly what gender my toons are depending on race and class:

    Female:

    - Human, exept for tanks.

    - Twi'lek

    Male:

    - Human tanks

    - All other races.

If it is a gender restricted game I'd be inclined to pick a class according to this, but I might play a Human Male Mage like in Aika if I realy want that mage =)

    I don't.

I find this to be a pretty interesting topic, tbh.

More often than not, a male player that plays female characters make this point:

"If I'm going to have to look at an @%% for x number of levels as I run around questing, killing, bending over and looting, etc.,... then it better be a female arse!"

Okay.  So, as a guy that doesn't want to look at the male genders backside, I would imagine you wouldn't want to view their  other privates.  So, would you get a sex change?  I mean... wouldn't this also make sense to you?

"If I'm going to have to look at private my private parts every day for the rest of my life when I have to shower and use the bathroom and all of that... then they had better be female private parts!"???

    ...

I dunno.  I never played with Barbies, either.

Crap.. forgot to answer. Yes I do. I'm playing Darkfall right now with a female Alfar. Her name is Moon Unit and she is a badass!

I tend to pick it based on the character model. If the female character model of a race looks better than the male, I'll use it. The male nightelves in WoW, for instance, look too much like Popeye for my liking, so I only made female NEs.

Not surprising the number of males that play females because they want to look at a female butt vs a male, or they're sexy or eye candy.   I've never understood that, as I guess I'm not observing the 'butt' of an avatar all that much.

I may have missed it, but I didn't see any women say they play a male to look at the butt or he's eye candy? Although I will admit I do look at the hair style from the back (male or female) as that is what I'm going to be seeing for many hours.  In general, I play female avatars because I'm female.  BUT if there is a class/look I prefer I'll play a male or if the story line lore demands it.  (LoTRO no female dwarves for example, Greenskins in WAR)

Definitely something the sociologists and psychologists could have fun with I think.  It is funny though how often you do get hit on playing a female.  I've been told how hot the character is, asked out, given things, etc., which surprised me as in most games the majority of either sex is played by males.  A bit of sexual ambiguity there?  My daughter and a friend of mine play males to avoid this cliche treatment you get in game as a female.

End of the day it's a bunch of pixels and whatever floats your boat.

I guess, being female, that is one of the reasons I have never made a dwarf in LOTRO--although many swear that their toons are female (since one is not supposed to be able to tell the difference, according to Gimli, lols).  I have to admit to seeing quite a few "female" dwarves running around Thorin's Hall in dresses, beards and mustaches flowing--now THAT is bizarre! :D

I always look at my toons as if they are characters in a story. So they are not me. Although I dont roleplay, I do imagine a background for my toons and with that how they are supposed to look. My toons vary a lot. Male, female, ugly, hot, I have them all.

Edit: They arent real peaople, theyll never be sexy.

Of course they can be sexy. If you take a photograph of a woman, its not the woman, but a photograph. Can the woman on the picture be sexy? And what if someone paints a lifelike image of that woman? Can the woman on the painting be sexy? You can get away further and further from the original and still keep the sexyness. If you dont understand why, you dont understand what sexy means :p

But then there are ppl who are just in denial of course. Afraid what other people might think if they would call an avatar or whatever drawing, sexy.

When you talk about your character to others, say on vent. Do you refer to your character in the second person or the third.

"Could I get an invite to the group?"

"Could Viking get an invite to the group?"

Of course we are often not consistent how we refer to our avatars and thats ok, but watch yourself sometime and see if you can note what your tendency is. If you tend to use the second person more then you probably play fewer alts, perhaps none at all and you probably tend to view your avatar as an extension of yourself into this world. This is not a bad or wierd thing, at some level these avatars are an extension of ourselves. You just have to realize that it is NOT really you. In this case, this approach is more akin to playing a "what if" game. "If I were in this world and in this situation, what would I do?" This kind of thinking is not unsual even as we watch movies. "Would I have the strength or the courage to do what the hero did?" But if you see an avatar in this way you will probably  choose a gender that reflects your own, perhaps even a race that is roughly human. Also keep in mind that sometimes people will only regard their "Main" in this way. Alts could then be a means to "be" something different.

On the hand, if you tend to speak of your characters in the third person then you probably view them more in terms of being their own personalities that you assume for a time. The character being completely separate from the player. This might come more naturally to those who have a background in stage acting or possibly in fiction writing. This is where I mostly tend to land. I will pick a name and a gender based on the kind of "character" I want to create. I often aggonize over picking a name longer than the rest of the character creation process. The look can also take some time to set as well. So is the character going to be a nice, friendly helpful healer type? a charismatic noble leader type? a dark brooding but ultimately good type? a gentle but not too bright giant type? or a redeemed from evil type? (I don't play evil, it is usually just used as an excuse to be an ass.) It all depends on the "character" you want to create, that is to say, the "personality" you wish to create. Based on this personality type along with the lore of the race that I choose and other such factors, I will then choose a name and gender that fits. Most often, I will run healers that are female and fighters that are male but not always, again, it depends on the lore and look of the race.

Now that I think about it, this all probably depends a great deal on how much pen and paper roleplaying you might have  played in years past. I would be interesting to find that out. Despite all this talk about creating a "character" and acting and roleplaying and everything else, I have never gotten into the whole RP thing in MMOs. It is almost more a matter of simply creating the "character" for my own thought process rather than actually playing them out within the game. All in all, probably 3/4 of my characters are male.

Of course, I can't say that I have have never created a female character just to marvel at what some of these games get away with. The idealized female form is, after all, breathtaking.

    All die, so die well.

I like playing female characters, as a male, because it's amusing to spot the people who are insecure in their own sexuallity by their reaction about men who play female characters.

You would think people would get tired of this question, really at the end of the day does it "really" matter at all if or if not you play this or that?

No it really doesn't matter, enjoy the game and get on with your life. =P
