Asheron calls!
Specially with Darktide server free for all full loot and great skill system still after 12 years best mmo ever!
Why do people always associate high numbers with quality is beyond me?
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I loved AC and it would be a very admirable runner up to my vote of ..............UO......
UO
Really hard to say. Probably Meridian 59 since it started it all. But we have EQ, AC, Eve, GW, UO and DaoC as well.
And many games have done some things great while other parts werent that good. I remember really liking some things about Lineage when it released but other things were annoying at best.
I really like SWG before Sony really screwed it up with the CU.
best overall IMHO eve.
best theme park wow (for now, we have rift which needs to get past its first few months, and swtor which will also be a theme park)
edit: spelled IMHO wrong....
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.
Currently Playing EVE, ESO

Can I instead pick the game that could of been the best MMO ever made? Either way I would still go with Vangaurd. Its the only game I can go back to every 6 months and just be blown away by the character classes, depth of play and size of the game world, but eventually hang it up because of technical and other very fixable issues. That game is like a 3/4'ers built pyramnd.
Dark age if camelot. Pre-Atlantis.
Never played SWG pre-NGE, but I heard it was pretty badass too.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
I agree with this ^. UO was the best game ever made and likely will always be. It has taken years but I have finally been able to get over it and play games I know that arent as good. I honestly believe there will never be as good a game again.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
Pre-cu Swg. Was the best game I ever played.
my 4th MMO, Asheron's Call, remains my favorite
Then EQ and UO as real close runner ups.
Camelot also holds a special place in my heart.
I always wished that I could've been able to play UO, SWG, Asheron's Call and all the other classics first instead of WoW, which tainted and spoiled me enough to keep me from trying the others. Dayum shame.
DAoC would be my pick. I played UO, AC, WoW,CoH and way too many others but pre Atlantis DAoC was the best.
WoW until they screwed it up
D&D Online until they screwed that up with the free to play
Vanguard, after they fixed it up from being screwed up, but low population because SOE screwed it up.
Now nothing, because there NOW ALL screwed up. It can't be me because I'm definitely not screwed up. Unless I'm so screwed up that I don't know I'm screwed up
none yet...... every good mmorpg that comes out (since the begining of the mmorpg era) has something that kills a decent amount of the fun in some way ( either grinding, graphics, storyline, skill system, combat system, mechanics.... etc etc etc)... No mmorpg as of today has mastered every single aspect of the mmorpg genre to be claimed as the best ever...... IMHO (there are goods and bads, none "best ever" yet
From the games I Played I have to give my vote to EvE.
I've stopped playing and I'm not starting again but I've got a great respect for CCP and the game they've made.
Having a single persistant universe with so many players, a real player-driven economy and the largest lag-free battles ( not implying that the largest fleet battles are lag-free. But the battles that are lag-free still feature more players in them then seen in other MMOs I've played. ) as well as an extremely expansive skill system and a complex ship fitting system make it for me a winner in both the MMO part and the RPG part.
Other games I've played fall behind in both categories. Unable to match the scale and complexity that EvE offers. I haven't played games such as UO, EQ, AC and SWG so I can't talk about those.
We are the bunny.
Resistance is futile.

Asheron's Call. Played alot and that was not my first, but nothing has come close.
I tried them all, and i would have to say Asherons Call was and still is the best MMO made.
They never had a patch that doomed the game like UO or DaoC.
and every month for the last 12 years they have done a content update EVERY SINGLE MONTH that makes it worth your 12 bucks when you know your actually paying for somthing.
none for now but once GW2 comes out it will mt the best mmo out there
oh gosh no.
I mean, WoW does a lot of things well but I could never see it as the best ever made.
My initial vote would go towards EVE. I have only tried it and it's not for me for several reasons but with a huge universse, player run economy, great customization and a feeling like you are in a "World/Universe" it trumps most games.
It's an ambitious game.
I would love to say Lineage 2 which is my favorite for a lot of things but I never got the sense that the developers had a great vision for it. The development has always seem haphazard as they add things just because they think it's neat.
Essentially, any game that has more to do than combat with great customization and capturing more of a world feel over a "game" feel can go up to the top of the list.
In my opinion.

I would really love to name one but I have not played them all and I'm not sure if my taste in games is shared with the majority of the gaming community.

Star Wars Galaxies (The Best)
The second MMORPG I played. The game had many professions, and you were able to create a unique character. There were also dedicated professions to crafting and entertainment, whose professions actually made a difference in the game. Player houses and cities were available, many planets to explore, and combat was built around cooperative play. People were also drawn into PvP, whether directly by combating enemy players and capturing and holding objectives to make the planet our own, or indirectly by supplying troops with weapons, armor, and food stuffs.
Dark Age of Camelot (2nd Best)
My first MMORPG and the longest one I've played straight. I played DAoC from 2002-2005 before even knowing this website existed or any other MMO's other than EQ and UO existed, yet I never once felt the need to research the other two games, because I was happy with DAoC. It had a huge world to explore, many different races and classes to create and customize, and the game was built around group cooperative play. Battlegrounds were large, with castle keeps and towers to siege, capture, and defend, and started at low levels. Because the game revolved around cooperative play, everyone was an expert at their class and group play well before they reached max level and have logged in countless man hours into experiencing group play. The average player knew how their class worked and how they strengthened other classes in their group, and how other classes benefited them. Realm pride was the norm. People were feircely loyal to their realm, their realm mates, and the average player was helpful and respectful to their realmmates.
City of Heroes/Villians (Third Best)
The third MMORPG I played; it is a unique game centered around roleplay. The game was designed around casual play, meaning you cold pick the game up, group up with other heroes, and tackle some content in short bursts of time and actually feel like you've accomplished something, without actually being rushed through the game. The game took a while to level up through, but it didn't feel like a chore, because they game is built around cooperative team play, where the game is at its funnest. The powersets were unique and different from each other, and were nicely customizable so you could individualize your heroe. Because the game offered so much customizability with your costume, biography, and powersets, it drew you into playing your character, making it the norm to roleplay your characters. The game also had/has a strong community, that often had costume competition and offered rewards for the best costumes. Animations and power effects were awesome looking, making you feel powerful.
World of Warcraft (Honorable Mention)
I didn't try WoW until late 2005. The quest-based leveling didn't appeal to me, so I couldn't get into the game at first. Yet later, after WoTLK released, I was able to finally get into the game enough to get to level 80 and begin raiding. I still think quest based leveling is boring and worse than grouping up, like in COH, DAoC, and SWG to grind mob camps as a group, because at least mob camp grinding and dungeon crawling allowed you to cooperate with other players, which was a blast, and there was always good conversation during the dowtimes when players recovered endurance, health, and mana. However, I give WoW credit for being a well polished game and appealing to most playstyles. It worked flawlessly, and offered challenging dungeon and raid content for those willing to ignore "how to" guides and videos, and add-ons that made everything easy. Unfortunately, the community was mostly childish, unwilling to lend a hand to newbs, was hostile, and didn't have any pride in their faction like players in DAoC had with their realms. Granted, there were exceptions to this rule and I met some great people, but it doesn't compare to an entire game full of great people where the asshat was an exception.
Best mmo ever is PONG online, no one can beat the adrenaline fuled battle of the sticks the speed of that ball the brain bashing fun of the action the best gfx ever, only problem is you can only run it on a machine that has no internet connection.
but best mmo's are eve online and ultima online.
Played just about everything over the years. My vote goes to Everquest. Hands down. I had a lot of respect for many others, but none so much as EQ through the scars of velious expansion. After that it got to be a little much for me. There was a game that had an end game...something to shoot for. fear, hate, sky.....dragons.....a lot of shit that you never thought you would be able to kill....and when you maxed level, you still needed a hell of a crew and some good strategy to accomplish your goals. Hell, even plane of Growth and some of the other upper level zones were actually fun as hell and challenging after SoV came and went. I guess the reason I liked it so much was because it was really challenging. For a gear-centric game....it was cool. I remember many times when the gear that was dropping would literally be the only one so far on a server....and you would have long times between being able to kill that mob again...and the item would be an ultra rare...so your character might be the only one for a long time with a certain robe or something. it was a cool feeling. I suppose the fact that it HAD an end game. Unlike one of my other favorites....Vanguard. Once I max leveled there, our guild could wipe most of the overland mobs because they were so accessible. Besides APW there wasn't much to do...and you could raid to the boss there without too much effort. No End game.....sad.....EQ had a mega end game for a long time. Badass end game...many many gods and dragons that you feared....gave you a reason to dream. My opinion anyway.
Tyrust - EQ
Proximo - EQII
Proximo - Warhammer Online
Fogerty - Vanguard
Having to weight all the + and - of the mmo's i've played, I'd have to say EvE as the best one.
It's the most innovative game with the most ambitious, fun and yet serious gameplay.
Several other games are nice aswell but end up falling short on something. EvE is more complete in many different aspects making it a value for money/time entertaining package. And thinking this came all the way since 2003...
