Am I getting bored with games or are games getting more boring?

Angier2758Angier2758 Member UncommonPosts: 1,026

I'm sitting here at 27 and I'm finally getting in shape.  So over the last 5 months I've been playing MMORPGs (and other games) less and less.  When I do get a moment to play EQ2 or Eve I find myself actually luke warm or sometimes just not caring to play at all.   I liked playing witcher 2, but I enjoyed it more for the story than the gameplay.  Am I just outgrowing games? Or are the games just not really doing anything different these days and as much as I want to fool myself; my subconscious knows.

I've played pretty much every major MMORPG to come out?  So what else is there?  Is there a fun online strategy game I don't know of?  I loved playing WC3 online.

In my opinion most games are boring now.

You're just getting older and out-growing a hobby is all.

    This.

I think it's the case for a whole lot of people, only some don't recognise it or don't want to acknowledge that it isn't merely the gaming genre that has changed, but that it's even more the case that they themselves have changed to the point that games in general can't enthrall or appease them anymore as much as in their youth when everything seemed great.

Solution is doing other stuff, or only pick the few games that manage to arouse you still, people's interests and tastes change over the years, go with the flow, don't hold on to a hobby or interest genre when you noticed that it has grown boring to you, variation and taking breaks at the right time is the key. Try different types of games or different interests, even french fries and pizza can become less tasteful if that's what you've been eating mostly throughout the week for years, varying with other food helps, the same with games.

From personal experience it's because the newer you are to gaming to shinier and more innovative things seem. But once you played a lot a lot seems just "old" and the same.

Sometimes a good break from a genre and than going back at it later can help. While not the same as the feeling you had when you started for the first time it can feel a bit fresher.

You have to find what is fun for you, I just returned to Lotro thinking I never would realising I want a relaxing atmosphere and a nice RPG.  One game cannot satisfiy all your gaming needs its something people need to get over but nor should one game be allowed to take over your life and rule more than half your weekly evening schedule regarding required login times.

I used to enjoy dynamic content but the industry generally since daoc pre toa has stuffed raid and pve grind + dailies down our throats, its up to us to say NO.

The killing off of wow subscriber numbers is the largest voice we can affect, since blizzard refuse to change their format which has become ZZZ. Why wow? because its the industry leader currently and if it is affected negatively it will encourage a top down domino change and no I dont mean pizza.

Both. Games in general continue to march toward the goal of wider and wider audiences - meaning the content is less focused on what YOU would LOVE and more focused on what MANY people would LIKE. At the same time, you've played many games by now, and its only natural to reach a point in time where it feels like you've played everything worth playing. Personally I've been going through my older game backlog lately and having a lot more fun, but I also haven't been putting in much gametime recently (also 27).

Imagine what it would be like to wait a few years and come back to games when things are more fresh :)

You could regularly make doom and gloom posts about the state of the genre.  Many posters on this site have made it their hobby it seems.  Best part is, you'll apparently never grow tired of it.

i hear u man...i played wow for 7 years almost since launch and now well im burnt out///i cant find one single game that can keep my intrest and i have tried them all the only one that managed to hold me for a while was Darkfall and thats because its sumthign new compaired to WoW...

But almost all MMO's are cookie cutters and nothing can perk my intrest and keep me liek how wow did from day one up untill cata where the game just lost its appeal....

I've also been single ever since I started playing MMOs, hehe. That might have something to do with it too...

OP getting bored with gaming might just be your subconscious telling you to get your ass back on track irl.

Once your ass is back on track (better work, wife, kids or whatever rocks your boat) you might feel like gaming again...Who knows?

Funnily enough Im more excited about the start of my new career than I am any game and grinding me some gold irl so I can pimp my irl house out! stuff that matters and stuff ;)

I think the problem is over the years everyone has loved a certain game or type of game so much, it just diminishes the value of others. The one that struck that perfect chord with you, often changes your taste at some level. You're always left waiting for that next entry to strike that same chord, which for most is very rare. I've had a few hit that chord over the last few years, TES entries, SWG, FO,  KOTOR etc.. SO of course I'm highly anticipating TES:Skyrim, and SWTOR, as well as ME3.

I find myself enjoying a lot of games but I find I'm liking a range of them.

Back when I was growing up, I only played the 'big' titles, but now that I have a job and stuff,  I can afford to look at the wider spectrum.

From Recetear to the latest FIfa and everything in-between. My latest gaming has been mainly League of Legends.

Your just seeing that playing kids video games is well, for kids. i have almost given them up fully. i re-formed my old death metal band and have been playing guitar like a mad man again. sure i might re-sub or go play on a emulator but when you get older sometimes stepping ouside and and having a cold beer by a camp fire with friends is just the best stuff ever.

I don't miss them to be honest.

I don't know I don't spend a whole lot of time gaming in general anymore, hell I probably visit forums more often. I just don't feel many games have been worth a purchase over the last few years, which is a stark contrast to my mid to late 20's,, the last game I remember buying was New Vegas. Which I still play with the RTS defense mods, great fun. It's just when the mood strikes though, there aren't many RPG's I've been interested in of late.

One rule I do go by today ( in the non MMo realm) is mod'ability. If it's not mod'able I most likely won't have all that much interest in it. There are a few exceptions, those are most likely Bioware titles or other high caliber story oriented RPG's.

I typically have one FPS on hand for MP, that's BFBC2 right now mostly the Vietnam addition. As well as one RTS, which I downloaded the LOTR's mod for Medieval total war 2. I just haven't seen many games that seemed all that interesting in the last few years. I've not decided if I want the witcher 2 or not, I loved the first but something about the second just strikes the wrong chord for me.  on the other hand my gf buys lots of games)

(OT) On a side note but somewhat related, anyone keeping an eye on MERP for Oblivion?

Perhaps you would want to try genres and/or platforms you have ignored before? Or maybe you just need a break and some other hobbies...

No but thanks for mentioning it I had no idea about it, (I find keeping track of elder scrolls mods pretty mind bending). Cheers.

No, you're correct. The industry as a whole has stagnated, and just repeatedly copies each other over and over until we get a mixed version of "Boring" & "Overdone Linear Questing" to the point of nausium.

Games are getting more boring, because they refuse to innovate rather than stagnate.

You do realise the average age of a MMO gamer is 37. The key to life is balance. Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired, game when it's enjoyable.

I do not think your really out growing your hobby? I mean its your hobby your chosing to do this for fun. I do however think that the games your playying just aren't really catching your interest anymore. I know this is true for me as well and I'm 19 so do not worry about getting older. Lol You just gotta broden your gaming horizon until you find a game that interest you. It might take you awhile, hell there may not even be a game out at the current moment that would even catch your attention. But stay positive and keep looking and you will find something. Also to anwser your posts question; its probably games are just getting boring, the reason for this is simple. Game are pretty much all the same with just a different skin on it. Atleast thats how it is for me now a days.

    I hope not!

I'm 45 and I hope I never outgrow games. Of course, I work, read, and have a life. But instead of watching TV, I like to play games.

I've restarted playing Morrowind and Oblivion, just to read all the books and do all the side quests, and really appreciate the awesomeness of the Elder Scrolls. I may go back for the free DL of Daggerfall. And while I play, I'm thinking about what it is that makes these games so awesome.

I'm also thinking about exploring Ultima Online for the first time. I want to see what this game is (or maybe what it was) that still makes people talk about it as an amazing mmorpg. I want to be a noob. I don't know if it's possible to find it, but I will try.

I do play Rift. It is not a fascinating world. I play with 1-3 people I know from time to time and we do warfronts together. It's like a lobby where we can jump on and do something light just for fun together, which we obviously connot do in a closed single-player game like Morrowind or Oblivion.

So at the end of this ramble, my question is:

Is there any way to make a living, breathing game world with depth and substance that by it's very nature will attract intelligent players and turn away the impatient compulsive spacebar jumpsters?

And I'm not talking about EVE, because I want an avatar that's not a spaceship.
