If all that matters are the numbers, why even bother playing a game when you can go do math problems? Aren't the setting and lore a lot of what makes a game what it is?

There is no lore when Godzilla and the Fly have the same hitpionts, stamina and mana.

Something non humanoid.  I'd like them to come up with a race of Gelatinous Goo.  I'm tired of bipedal or quadruped races.  They need to start thinkin out of the box.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Personally, I'd like to see Centaurs as a playable race. They are a pretty iconic race from a lot of fantasy worlds, but I have yet to find a game that gives you to opportunity to play as one. Sure, it would be different, but I think it would be pretty cool, especially because you could be your own mount.

Myth Wars 1 had elf centaurs as a race... but i think they closed the game down after releasing Myth Wars 2, and MW2 had only 2 legged elves :( lol...

as someone said before, id also like to see non humanoid races... any race that can walk like a human is a damn humanoid.... i want something different... anything...  maybe something without legs, and have wings? lol....

also Nagas (all games use nagas as villains... it could be nice to have them as playable race also)... or if the game is futuristic (sci-fi or steam punk) then robotic non humanoid races would do the job....

Thanks guys that definitely was it, that game had a load of interesting playable species.

I miss my Lizardman druid :( - Horizons had awsome races and pretty good class/skill system..shame it died out

other races..something like that rts game - Impossible Creatures where you could mix and match 2 or 3 different creatures..like a dog with a crocodile head and zebra butt...

if not that then insect and/or plant types and if it were a pvp based game then carebears..just for the rage tells i would recieve one-shotting someone with a carebear stare

Wow, I regret never trying Horizons/Istaria. Playing as a dragon sounds pretty awesome.

    A puppet.

    Naga.

Also, it might be fun to play a "character" that was actually more than one person. I think Allods did this, one of the races you could choose actually gave you three little hamster-ish guys. But they moved in unison and were effectively just one "unit" as any other race would be. I wouldn't mind seeing more games do this. Maybe let you play as a swarm of Pikmin. The obvious downside of this, though, is that it takes away a lot of the character's recognizability, and with that goes your tendancy to think of your character as an extension of yourself. It's also harder to represent equipment which is also needed to become attached to a character who is changing and growing over time.

I'd like to play mounts more. Not like just a dumb horse, but more like the polar bear mounts in the Golden Compass.

Naga. Was really hoping that WoW would have released them as a counter balance to the cartoony/child/joke race that is the pandaren. Could have given them a japanese theme and all to mirror the chinese theme of the pandas.

    Oh well!

    Also, beholders are badass.

The game you are thinking about exist and is Biowares Neverwinter nights from 2001.

Personally, I would like to play a Amberite (read Zelaznys "Nine princes of amber" if you havn't, it is one of the best fantasy books ever).

The changelings from R.I.F.T.S would be awesome as well (but would only work if you don't show the character name glowing in top over the avatar, or at least if you could use a false alias).

Darkelves that arent evil per se.

In general - all "evil" races, such as Orcs, Goblins, Ogre, ... - in a form that they arent evil per se.

Personally I find the concept of an intelligent, sentient race that is almost always evil, but is in concurrence to other races, extremely unlikely.

Either this race is powerful and would wipe out all other races.

Or this race would be wiped out (or enslaved, detained etc) by the other races, because they tried to wipe out them.

You can NOT play a Beholder in NWN. Neither the original campaign nor any of the addons.

As a side note, Neverwinter Nights was released 2002.

From Dave Hargrave's Arduin: Phraint -- coldly logical grasshopper/mantis humanoids who were noted for their acrobatic, leaping attacks where they would throw a javelin at the apogee of their jump, flip over their opponent, and strike from behind with a two handed sword.

Centaurs would be cool but I think they would have to play by their own physics rules to be really good and most devs are interested in having the same control across the board.  A Centaur having the same controls as a Human character would be odd.  Centaurs with controls like Assassin's Creed 2 when you're up on a horse would be neat.

How about a mosquito in a non-targetting MMO? I'd play as a mosquito. XD

What race? Well, real Lord of the Rings Elves would be pretty cool, but I believe I would actually prefer playing a Witcher - a true witcher of Kaer Morhen. But how would you work that out? In an traditional mmorpg, no problem. But then again neither of those would fit into an Everquest 2 clone because of them both being stronger than mere mortals - and thus not in balance, unless silly gameplay decisions are made, which then ruins the whole idea.

We?re all dead, just say it.

A robot. Not the 'humanoid' type robots that are smooth and well designed, but a clunky steam powered robot of sorts. One that, while humanlike in its rough shape, is very much a robot and empahsizes that through smoke or steam and non human attributes.

I agree with anything out there. I have always wanted to play as a squad or regiment of troops.

Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.

A troll similar to the original EQ1 troll in story, but looked like a DAoC troll or a LOTRO troll.

I really miss playing my troll thane especially when I grouped with this all norse women guild called Valkyries.
