From Dave Hargrave's Arduin: Phraint -- coldly logical grasshopper/mantis humanoids who were noted for their acrobatic, leaping attacks where they would throw a javelin at the apogee of their jump, flip over their opponent, and strike from behind with a two handed sword.
there was a race similar to this in an expansion I dabbled in PnP DnD game. It was set in a desert world...Dark Sun. I absolutely loved playing a race called the Thri-Kreen. They were a mantis-man type warrior that you are somewhat describing. They used obsidian glass headed spears, and a tri bladed boomarang and nets to capture prey...and elves were a favorite dish.
They could survive extended periods of time hunting, lots of cool ideas....especially in such an inhospital world.
I played a lizardman in another PnP DnD expansion, Spell Jammer. Lots of back lore and they had giant pools in their ships for keeping food, sharks, whatever.
Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes... all so overdone. I used to purposefully change stats on well known monsters b/c players were so used to fighting them. Give a gnoll 18/55 strength, a two handed sword and a random spell immunity and now you have a gnoll that your players will remember.

Playing a dragon would be fun, if done right. You have to build your hoard of gold, and find stuff to eat. Are you going to be friendly to people or treat them as food? Then you can dable in dragon magic, if you choose. You have to be careful of other dragons; dragons do eat smaller dragons. Rumor has it that Isteria lets you play dragons and is still running.
========================== The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
I'm just curious to hear what playable race people would like to see in an MMO, fantasy or otherwise, that they have yet to see thus far.
Personally, I'd like to see Centaurs as a playable race. They are a pretty iconic race from a lot of fantasy worlds, but I have yet to find a game that gives you to opportunity to play as one. Sure, it would be different, but I think it would be pretty cool, especially because you could be your own mount.
Centaurs were playable in shadowbane.................
although it looks like centaur is winning, so im more than happy to support that. id definately come back and try WoW out again if either of these races were released.
EDIT- damn, thought this was WoW only. scratch what i said. centaur is still my second choice, but in any given game id love to see robots get more coverage, even steampunk wood/metal bots in a fantasy setting.
What race? Well, real Lord of the Rings Elves would be pretty cool, but I believe I would actually prefer playing a Witcher - a true witcher of Kaer Morhen. But how would you work that out? In an traditional mmorpg, no problem. But then again neither of those would fit into an Everquest 2 clone because of them both being stronger than mere mortals - and thus not in balance, unless silly gameplay decisions are made, which then ruins the whole idea.
Err - thats no issue whatsoever. SW:TOR is a good example for this. Every player is a hero, so every player is "overpowered" - compared to NPCs. So if some players are Jedi, then those are the average Jedi. While other players are Bounty Hunters, then those are uber BHs, thus they are still balanced.
And specifically LotR Elves are not more powerful than other races in the books. They live longer, true. But thats no actual combat advantage. Many of the heroes in LotR are other races than elves, and they can easily keep up.
In fact, the way LotR is written, the Hobbits are the uber race, with "hidden strengths" in them. This is a repeated theme.
I thought Horizons (Istara) dragons were a great idea. To bad the game was lacking.
I'd like to see a race that does not use gear or weapons. As you level/skill up your claws, bite, breath weapon, magic, skin/scales, etc. all grow with you.

So since there were drow and spiders before hand, who got the smart idea to milk the male spiders?

I think that would be cool, if anything just to have a giant city in a game. Giant world was totally the coolest part of Super Mario 3 and I'd love to travel to something like that in an MMO with a regular sized avatar.

Until racial stats drastically effect the way that you play, altering your strengths and weaknesses, who cares?

I do like the idea of gelatious goo.
And a little of topic but, has a game but in a class that deals with time. Like a chronomage.
p.s. i'd like to see the Doctor Who references in game with it
The destroyers in Guild Wars 2.

A Leet from AO...
...you're either Leet or you're nothing.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

two headed ogre, hands down.

I personally want more Pandas in my MMOs...I hope a game does that soon.
like some peeps been saying before nagas and lizard type also dryads and centaurs
There are still not enough robots and mechs in my mmo's, 'nough said.
KOBOLDS. It has to be Kobolds. They take me back to my NWN days of having that talkative bard following me everywhere.

What is so bad about Istaria, exactly? I'm really considering giving it a try, mostly just to check out this dragon business.

No, They were a clan of normal Drow that pissed off their goddess so she cursed them with this form... or something like that.

Bear shape-shifters like the Beornings in LotR or one of the old D&D races i'd forgotten about like mind-flayers or githyanki.
Hyrdas
Not really but anything really huge would be interesting to play.
