I hope GW2 is awesome, but if it fails im gonna smile because fanboys already say its the best MMORPG ever and its barely in beta.
It cant since they don't have to worry about subs. Well, it can, but it is very very unlikely since most people just buy new mmos even if they end up not being as good as they thought.

They'll still want revunue from the cash shop and future expansions. I'm no expert on the inner workers of NCSoft but I would think they fully expect gw2 cash shop to outperform both L2 and Aions cash shop.

This is my single largest concern for GW2. More than anything else. The cash shop.
I wateched Funcom turn Anarchy Online into a pay to win cash shop driven game. Now I see TSW will be launched with box and sub fees and a cash shop to boot. Knowing what they did in Anarchy, I am more than concerned about that game. Enough where I have taken TSW off my To-Play list.
AN has shown a more responsible approach to their cash Shop in GW1. But I can't help but wonder. GW2 is on a whole new production level than GW1 and NCSoft is gonna want numbers and they will want them quickly.

Yes, and they will get that from the people playing the game. There is a reason cash shops are so popular these days. Often times, it is better then having a sub since people end up spending more money on average then they do with a sub.
GW1 is still around and has had a ton of expansions...That game wasn't even very popular in the grand scheme of things. Also there has never been any kind of cash shop requirements for GW1, I doubt that will change for GW2.

Numbers wise its so true heres the model.
1 million players
500k spend more than 15$ a month
100k spend more than 30$ a month
1 million buy the 1st content patch
F2P is profitable and if done right its more profitable over Subs.
I think it is already under 200k. They need to do something massive with the dynamic events, or PvP, for this game to not drop under 100k when TERA, TSW and GW 2 are released.
They made 100 million, thats pretty significant. The game has been the best success story since WoW came out .(we will see with SWTOR for now..) Also not sure where people are pulling these sub numbers from, but Trion has never released any sub numbers. They do not have to since they are not owned by a publisher like EA or Activisiion.
AoC made close to 100 million its first year for what its worth (which isnt much).
Source?
This is from Funcoms q4 2011 Financial reports (easily found online) for their projections for AoC
Conan-like scenario
? 1,050,000 client sales first year
? Poor retention (only slightly better than Age of
Conan)
280,000 average subscribers
? First yr revenue est $ 100 million
Keep in mind 'average subs' isnt what the final sub number was, just an average over the year...AoC started at 700k and ended up at 100k.
There are more then a few servers running at high pop and as more people join every server is now normally running at medium. 1.8 will simply add to this because right now there is zero competition still and TOR while out there is being forced to play catch up.
And here is why Puremallace gets singled out...
You think Rift has more subs than ToR? Seriously? ToR isnt playing catch up, its ahead...No, I doubt it has the 1.7 million subs Bioware says it does, but it has significantly more than Rift, thats blatantly obvious.
And of course 1.8 has competition. EQ f2p. SWtoR 1.2. TERA. All happening before 1.8. Also, MoP and D3 are closer to release (rumors are MoP beta beginning shortly after press week this week) Not to mention the GW2 hype train. LOTRO's large patch. All these things may seem small, but they add up.
I still play Rift. Not nearly as much as I used to, but I still have an active account. It' s a good game. Nothing earth shattering but it's not going anywhere. So if you don't play it, why should you care?
And why is it that whenever a new game comes on the horizon, we have to sift through these doom and gloom threads?
It's a given that people are playing "other" games while waiting for GW2....even me. But it's not news. Has any successful MMO ever been shut down as a result of the release of another?
I am waiting for GW2. So are a lot of people. Hell, it's one of the main topics in Rift's general chat. But there is one thing I am fairly certain of.
GW2 is ony one or 2 steps forward from where other games are. Rift is pretty aggressive in it's own right. GW2 is not a revolution in MMOs. Just from the simple fact that there are limitations within the currentl level of technology and AI programming. GW2 can't be light years ahead of everyone else.
If you beta tested GW2 and had your doors blown in but something new and original, I can say, I had the same experience in Rift the 1st time I got unexpectedly caught up in a zone invasion. I thought that was awesome and the future of MMOs.
Only it didn't take long for the limits of what can be done to show up, Meaning, it got old. It will be the same in GW2. DEs will become less and less dynamic and GW2 will start to lose some of it's shinniness. Not to say it won't continue to be fun. Not to say that it won't become the best MMO on the market and stay that way. I believe it will, I am just saying that gamers themselves are different now. Games get old much quicker now then they did 5-10 years ago.
Everyone is so focused on GW2. This thread has very little to do with GW2. People will leave Rift even if there are no new options, just like they did all throughout 2011.

When the hell did I say Rift had more subs then TOR? In fact I do not give a damn about TOR. People have stopped trying to build TOR's playerbase off the grave of Rift, so I am happy. TOR has a built in fanatic fanase and Bioware could screw up constantly and they will still not unsub.
Hell watch half the crap Blizzard does to the WoW fanbase. MoP will only cost WoW subs and anyone not blind see's this. Entire expansion based on a flat out joke race as a way of pandering to children. Tera is niche..most people will not get it or even be able to play the game. That game is aimed at a VERY SPECIFIC target audience.
TOR 1.2 should be called..what the game should have launched considering their budget was 4 times as much as Rifts. Gw2 is still out there with no expected release date. That is the only thing I see hurting Rift in the near future.

You said ToR was playing catch up to Rift in a post about population....
And you obviously do give a damn about ToR, as your post history indicates as well as you bringing it up in this thread.

I left Rift last summer but am actually considering firing it up again and resubbing. SWTOR was fun for a month but no longevity there, only the story was good and that is over now. And I'm actually no longer interested in GW2 the more I learn about it. So for me my options at this point are limited: rejoin Rift or maybe give TERA a try when it comes out. I would be disappointed to see no expansion until 2013. I come back to Rift every now and then, and I like the progress and polish that goes into the game, but IMO it would do well with a full blown xpac that not only adds significant new content, but introduces more gameplay elements.
I played right when it was out and had fun got 4 50s had a blast I quit because at the end it was a boring pvp or rift grind. I followed this game more then any other game ever and was testing the game 6 months before it came out and the class system was hyped up so much, but a year later and still no new souls ? What I hated about rift was what I knew 100% going into it the linear themepark where every race every class starts in the same area and does the exact same quest and it is the same issue for me in swtor. I will honestly avoid any game that follows this trend in the future.
More souls per class...maybe like 1 per BECAUSE IT HAS taken a full YEAR to get what we have somewhat balanced
2 new raid zones..get Infernal Dawn extremely soon and probably another 10 man shortly after
2 fresh pvp instanced and not "escalations" I do agree with
4 new dungeons...so release a dungeon and what make it drop tier 1 raid gear? What should the itemization be? What new dungeon and bam old content utterly out dated and useless now? How about new dungeons on a new continent that are Tier 1 raid difficult like master mode now.....but they have a master mode that drops tier 2 raid gear?
It keeps GSb and ROS relevant and also keeps raid rifts good. New continent I agree as long as they do not out date old content. My theory is right now this is the main difference between a WoW player and a Rift player.
WoW players are fine with this new skip 80 levels thing. From what I can tell this would out rage Rift players if Trion attempted it. It flies in the face of what Trion is attempting to and also what ArenaNET is trying also. The big big big big big thing is Rift players want old zones to stay relevant.
Blizzard and Everquest did this thing where they one zone after another that served no actual purpose. You have the huge expansion Lich King and now everyone DREADSSSSSSSSSSSS being force to level in Northrend now. How about Burning Crusade with Outlands being made utterly pointless? Not only does it kill nostalgia it kills the epic feel of the game.

Your game is fast approaching a niche status of low playerbase (think eq2 before F2P but lower). OBVIOUSLY what trion is doing rihgt now isnt attracting the numbers they want so everything you love about rift isnt working. YOU"RE the minority accept it you love the game how it is, but its obvious people dont.

So not to point out the obvious. Where the hell are these demands on the TOR, WoW, Gw2 forums? I just want to know where this entitlement comes from. We get content updates every month or so and the raiding in this game is making Blizzard look like a bunch of amateurs.
If this is niche then fuck yeah keep it that way. Content fast as crap and extremely stable guild. Why would I want Rift to become like WoW? A game full of a extremely toxic community of people constantly crying on the forums for stuff they will never get. Sorry I got a taste of the wow community back when Rift launched and I hated it.
The "zomg nerf it now or I quit." babies who play the forums more then they play the game. I also would like to point out that EQ2 comment proves you are clueless about what was wrong with Eq2. The fact the game engine is ghetto and run by a shit company is the least of that games issues. I find a problem with this mmo hypocrisy when I see people bitching on the WoW forums for things I get in Rift.
This whole genre is utterly ass backwards on how it works. If there were no Rift I would get the hell out of it without a second thought. We are stuck in this repetitive mode of dumb ass's swarming games they never should and inflating the population base and then deflating it after a month. People who do little to no research and then blame the mmo dev is what makes me laugh.
Blizzard pissing all over the WoW playerbase is what is convincing people F2P is some god send when in actuality it will share the same fate here that it did in Korea. You people are seriously screwed when every mmorpg is f2p and everyone of them go pay to win just to afford to pay their employees.
An xpac in 2013 would actually be a smart tactic IMO to grab people who burned through the new games content back since they will see a signifcant rop as tera, TSW, and GW2 releases and many wont come back for just patches but a big xpac can make some think twice and the GW2 crowd too since GW2 doesnt have a sub. might actually be a smart move, maybe not tho who knows lol im no business man.

Your entire reply was a rant and had nothing constructive.
Having fully alpha and beta tested EQ2 I know very well where and how SOE screwed it up and the engine was just the start of it. As of today I would say EQ2 is the best fantasy PVE MMO it really has turned around.
With regards to Rift the thing you fail to realize is releasing content like this is very costly the company will not and cannot continue to justify it for a game that doesn’t bring in the huge numbers it needs to sustain that type of investment.
Just for simple business and revenue purposes an expansion is needed to regenerate interest in the game and hope it attracts new people or get people who left to come back.
In my experience it’s too late for rift to be a substantial player in the MMORPG market anymore the game is good, but it will just be a niche game that a small % plays because so many people left you will never get all them back. So your game that you love has 2 options decrease development cost or release an expansion to regenerate interest.
Prediction Rift F2P by 2013 if the numbers get any lower.
You seriously are missing the point of this game. Sit there and tell me about all the zones WoW has and the sheer size of it and how much is not used for anything?
Sorry, but in WoW you can pick zones/quests to level in pretty much all the way.
You have to go through the same zones in Rift. Yes, I can skip quests I don't like and won't miss the experience, but while
both are linear paths to max level, Rift's path is much, much narrower.

Trion just secured another 85 MILLION dollars in investment thanks to this pitiful game with its small pitiful population that has already made them 100 MILLION dollars. You obviously never played Aion that had 4 servers.
If people do not want to try out Rift, then that is there loss. Is it Trions fault that some people are some kind of crusade to stamp out every themeparks that dares to appear, but these same hypocrites are not preeching the same shit when it comes to WoW?
I mean honestly wtf do you people do when Rift and TOr drop in China and release sub numbers in the millions? What do you say then? You have to be blind to not see it coming. What is this concept of main stream? What is main stream to you? If Rift is niche then it is the best damn niche game I have ever played.
If you predict f2p by 2013 you better go tell the people who are sub'd until April of 2013 to get a refund then.
Rift is doing great and is turning good profit for Trion. 100 million in 2011 what more can they ask for? haters gonna hate yeah it is cliche but true.
However, i personally feel that Rift is not about rifting anymore and i would love to see return of more dynamic rift content compared to end game dungeon grinding. I absolutely can not stand that game design anymore.

Hmmm, strange. I just have the feeling they are getting more players again these days.
But maybe that's just me.
Imo, Trion can add plenty of differend stuff(in future patches) with their story to get their players back.

Sorry, but in WoW you can pick zones/quests to level in pretty much all the way.
You have to go through the same zones in Rift. Yes, I can skip quests I don't like and won't miss the experience, but while
both are linear paths to max level, Rift's path is much, much narrower.
And this is from someone no longer playing WoW.
If you predict f2p by 2013 you better go tell the people who are sub'd until April of 2013 to get a refund then.
just to add 2 things
title is completly random, there is no telling when an expansion will hit
the second, MS is likely milestone
Clicky for Rift trial
Rift is doing great and is turning good profit for Trion. 100 million in 2011 what more can they ask for? haters gonna hate yeah it is cliche but true.
However, i personally feel that Rift is not about rifting anymore and i would love to see return of more dynamic rift content compared to end game dungeon grinding. I absolutely can not stand that game design anymore.
Don't forget this qoute:
"Remember, we have several more dragons and their cults to slay before Telara can breathe easy. And then, of course, there’s talk of what will come after, which we’re really looking forward to sharing later this year."

Just wait untill they announce something later this year.
btw: Could "Milestones" be some kind of closed beta's(friends&family) also?
