You are so wrong on so many counts that it would take me much longer than I am willing to spend to help you sort out your mixed up ideas. Let me start by posting this:
The term "cyberbullying" was first coined and defined by Canadian educator and anti-bullying activist Bill Belsey, as "the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others."
The website you quoted is devoted to stopping teen cyberbullying hence they use the word teen it in their definition. Most adults are not committing suicide from cyberbullying like teens are so the organization you quoted focuses on young adults. Your analogy about James Earl Jones is complete nonsense since Mr. Jones did not ask people to email an emotionally unstable person and tell them to commit suicide. A better analogy would be if Mittani found a kid with down syndrome who liked to eat boogers and then asked thousands of people to mail the kid boogers because he thought it was funny. Either way, Mittani personally and NOT IN GAME asked thousands of real people (MANY OF WHOM ARE IN HIS ALLIANCE AND DO WHATEVER HE SAYS) to convince a known emotionally unstable person to take his own life.
You can paint it any way you like but it was wrong and regardless of the apology, shows what kind of person Alex truely is.
You're an idiot if you think that this incident says anything about what kind of person Alex truely is. Get a grip or go get help. It's a friggin game it's a game that has a well known and well deserved reputation for a certain kind of ruthless play. and those who can't recognize this are the ones who have the real problem.
While I don't know Alex personally what I do know about the man playing The Mittani tells me that you are wrong in your assesment of what kind of person he is.
The idea that you can judge what kind of person an individual is based on a single incident in an unique circumstance is just stupidity.
Judging a person based on the behavior of a fictional persona is beyond deluded.
"Cyberbullying" is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. It has to have a minor on both sides, or at least have been instigated by a minor against another minor. Once adults become involved, it is plain and simple cyber-harassment or cyberstalking. Adult cyber-harassment or cyberstalking is NEVER called cyberbullying.
um playing the game is one thing, going to a party for the game and telling the people there to harrass this guy and try to get him to commit suicide IS cyber bullying.
I can't believe people are defending this guy. you guys really make the rest of us gamers look bad by confirming the whole gamer stereotype of being bottom feeding no life losers.
No it's not. It may constitute harrassment but it's not cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a very specific thing that takes place between minors not adults.
Calling this incident "Cyberbullying" is a missuse of the term.
Oh and I guess I didn't make it clear enough that the quote you decided to reply too is a cut and past from the stopcyberbullying website.
Talk about making gamers look bad.
And The National Crime Prevention Council defines it as "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person" Other researchers use similar language to describe the phenomenon with no age definition.
We can all produce quotes and definitions, as someone who deals with workplace grievances I can produce many studies of workplace bullying which by definition cannot be limited to children and yet are still defined as bullying.
The NCPC's page on cyberbullying is clearly directed towards teen victims.

Bullying is bullying so quit trying to split hairs. There has never been a age limit on bullys. It was quite obvious bullying occurred here. Stop trying to defend the undefendable. Trying to attach real world actions to a fictional character is ludicrous, unless of course the originator has significant mental issues.
I've tried Eve several times. And although I want a good sci-fi game to play, Eve isn't it. Way to many griefers and death penalties too high for my frustration levels.
If someone stays in the game and gets their ingame assets wiped, how did they not know what they were getting themselves into?
As to refering to what happens in Eve as Darwinism, I would disagree. It is too specialized of an environment with virtually no limitations on negative activity. In essence, it's a breeding chamber for antisocial activities. I know people like to say it's more like the realworld, but it isn't. It's about as real as WoW is on a PvE server, just on the other side of the equation.
To those that play Eve, good luck, and have fun. It's just not my game of choice. Oh, and one more thing, stop trying to drag your ingame emo-drama to the real world.
I find it funny that people are actually defending what happened here. While it may not seem that bad to certain people, you also need to realize that when you get in certain positions you can't just do what you want. The average grunt can get away a lot more then someone in management. Especially when what you did adds a black eye to the game.
Has anyone even bothered to find out if the guy crying even was suicidal, the most likely scenario is that he was just trying to save his ship, and did so in a really lame way, the only thing the Mittani did that was actually wrong was to broadcast this at the csm thing, if he'd put out the call to arms to pod the guy on a regular basis in game, that would have been fine, its even allowed, as you can wardec corps so that you can attack them in high sec. all this cyber bullying accusations is just totally lame, at no time was the guys real name even revealed, nor his address, or even if it was actually a guy, it may have been a girl after all, just because they gave some lame reason to plead for their ship (thats right folks this is all about pixels folks, at no time was anyone actually harmed beyond losing a few iskies), nothing the guy/girl said was probably true.
but to be on the safe side, if i ever see the guy i'll ask him.. in high sec at least.. in low sec or null.. i might not even bother asking. have to maintain a kill ratio after all
there is a simple rule in Eve, and that is, don't fly anything you can't afford to lose, at least outside of high sec.

then i see MANY EVE players coming out to justify this crap.
i stand by what i said in a previous thread, I hope EVE continues to thrive so it keeps the trash out of other games.
Why are people in here posting about mindless ganking and FFA PvP?
That isn't even remotely what this is about. The Mittani is leader of the most influential group in nullsec (think Endgame). In EvE, when you finally stop playing solo like an idiot, you realize that it's you and your people vs everyone else.
People are so quick to be the white knight that they don't even realize the kind of idiots they are championing for.
For example - Just this past week some idiot bot miner with entirely too much isk to spend gets ganked by some Corp mates of mine in high-sec. He gets something like 10-11 bots wiped and podded by 1 of our guys.
The guy comes to one of our diplos asking if this is how we conduct ourselves. We, very politely, tell him so long as he's not doing that during serious Ops then its fine with us.
He gets mad and swears he will bring down the wrath of the heavens on our corp. We offer him some Merc services to use but he says he has his own - ok.
This moron contacts a 'Merc' that proceeds to take a payment of 1 billion who then goes to msg our original ganker to have a laugh and split the money with him.
They didn't know each other but they were united in recognition of a tool that was just asking for it. Honestly, you should see how many people ASK for this kind of stuff before you assume everyone is a heartless ganker.
I'm not in GSF, but I've long been allied with GSF and they are one of the best allies anyone could have in that game. The Mittani is a greater leader in that game and I can't wait for Jita to burn once his ban is over - However, for now, Tenal burns

Totally agree with you about judging a person based on a fictional persona.
Lets look at what he did a real person though.
The guy enouraged others to harrass another person to make them comit suicide in real life.
So that makes him a pretty pathetic person at best, at worse an online bully with sociapathic issues and totally selfish view of participating in social activities.
Oh, and it seems he is more deserving of the "unable to tell the difference between real life and virtual" title then others if he brings that view out of the game and into real life.

From what I understand he showed himself to be an alcoholic. Pity him and pray he gets counciling.
Hitting someone's ships in game is not bullying, using a public platform to call on people to do so in game with the stated aim of trying to get him to kill himself is a form of bullying, quite simple, comparing it to an actor in form of passive entertainment is a specious argument. I have no hatred of the Mittani, I don't regularly play eve, but both myself and the Mittani can see his actions were very wrong, but others seem hell bent on justifying or minimising them.
Regardless of what he was trying to accomplish, all he did was kill someone in a video game and try to get others to do the same. It's not bullying. I'm so sick of hearing about this i think i may have to head to my local locator agent...

Bullying is bullying so quit trying to split hairs. There has never been a age limit on bullys. It was quite obvious bullying occurred here. Stop trying to defend the undefendable.
There is a very real reason to differentiate between the two activities which justifies the use of different terms. Children do not have the same mental and emotional tools to deal with "bullying" that adults do, They lack the emotional and cognitive development to defend themselves effectively.
We generally extend more protection to minors because of this, it's the reason why we have age of consent laws.
Adults are expected to take care of themselves save in more extreme circumstances.
The Wis was a big boy and if he couldn't deal with the consequences for his in game actions (looking a hell of a lot like a botter) then that's his problem. This wasn't a case where he had no other options this wasn't an attack on his lively hood or his real world reputation.
Once again few if any people are saying what Alex did at the alliance pannel was right or smart or justified, Only that the reactions of many are inappropriate given the circumstances.
Alex made a mistake, he recognized said mistake and took steps to make ammends for said mistake. He did not try to make bullying (cyber or otherwise) look cool he did not give out the guys real name. He didn't do any of the horrible things people are accusing him of here and on other forums.
The people who are still going on about this and demonizing him are doing so out of either malice towards his ingame persona or from a overblown sense of self righteousness or a lack of ability to separate fantasy from reality.
I mean come on the pop psychologist here are claiming to know his value as a person based on this one incident.
Alex was drunk on Jager when he lost his grip on the differenence between fantasy and reality , what's your excuse?

its not my job to defend anyone, but i have to wonder, why are people jumping to the defence of some idiot who made a fool of himself by pleading for mercy from someone from goonswarm.. he couldnt have been a noob, as you don't just happen to be in low sec or null sec without a whole bunch of warnings to the effect of, once past this point people will try to kill you, type of thing. of course, the average Eve player understands the risks and either accepts them or stays the hell out, and the rest, well, theres a whole raft of themepark games to hold their hands and show them what to do. Eve has the steepest learning curve of all games out there at the moment. Well, who the trash are is a matter of opinion, so don't be surprised if your put in the same category you so freely assign to others.
Alex was drunk on Jager when he lost his grip on the differenence between fantasy and reality , what's your excuse?
What COULD have happened...
"Yes your honor, just because I stood on a company sponsored platform and encouraged the crowd to harrass a player in game who had previously warned me he was suicidal, hoping that he would in deed comit suicide, I feel at no point responsible for him taking his own life or for the actions of those that listened and did harrass him."
Wrong is wrong and if you can't see that...seek help.

There is no issue with any of that, the game is the game, however when out of game in a public forum someone calls on people to harass someone in game because he has said he has instability issues then that is wrong, even the Mittani admits that is wrong, if you disagree take it up with him.

Because simply, some of us have the capacity to separate real life and a game, personally I consider that one of my few plus points.

Oh, and it seems he is more deserving of the "unable to tell the difference between real life and virtual" title then others if he brings that view out of the game and into real life.
From what I understand he showed himself to be an alcoholic. Pity him and pray he gets counciling.
Currently bored with MMO's.
Regardless of what he was trying to accomplish, all he did was kill someone in a video game and try to get others to do the same. It's not bullying. I'm so sick of hearing about this i think i may have to head to my local locator agent...

"Cyberbullying" was first coined as a blanket term and then specifically tailored to "Cyberstalking" and "Cyberharassment" to categorize adult cases..
Just wanted to ease the OCD of some pedantic members.
its not my job to defend anyone, but i have to wonder, why are people jumping to the defence of some idiot who made a fool of himself by pleading for mercy from someone from goonswarm.. he couldnt have been a noob, as you don't just happen to be in low sec or null sec without a whole bunch of warnings to the effect of, once past this point people will try to kill you, type of thing. of course, the average Eve player understands the risks and either accepts them or stays the hell out, and the rest, well, theres a whole raft of themepark games to hold their hands and show them what to do. Eve has the steepest learning curve of all games out there at the moment. Well, who the trash are is a matter of opinion, so don't be surprised if your put in the same category you so freely assign to others.
The pig that attacked his victim, had better hope that the victim doesn't kill himself, or he will face a criminal investigation.
"Don't corpse-camp that idea. Its never gonna rez"
Bladezz (The Guild)
What COULD have happened...
"Yes your honor, just because I stood on a company sponsored platform and encouraged the crowd to harrass a player in game who had previously warned me he was suicidal, hoping that he would in deed comit suicide, I feel at no point responsible for him taking his own life or for the actions of those that listened and did harrass him."
Wrong is wrong and if you can't see that...seek help.
lol still can't believe people are defending this guy. you know you guys are not representing the EVE community very well right? I have seen people bash the EVE community only to have people come out and say "oh you're wrong its a nice community"
then i see MANY EVE players coming out to justify this crap.
i stand by what i said in a previous thread, I hope EVE continues to thrive so it keeps the trash out of other games.
