I am disgusted by this what a pathetic excuse to say you gave the keys away to either people associated with the website or those that use them for monetary purposes such as other website that run stupid contests for them or make you download some bullshit program this sad day for the average gamer.
americans what will you say when your website is not working for the reason nothing is working ......... how much users you think there are waiting for the keys 10? :O
Yes we all saw that the servers couldn't manage it at all!
But don't you think a small announcement would've help just a tiny bit? Seriously, it wouldn't cause dissatisfaction like it did with, as Mr Murphy himself said, "badly communicated" lol...
Guess that is what happens when you shit on your long time members just so you can get a few extra thousand clicks by the 2 week peeps who only came here to take a key.
To be blunt, GIVE THE KEYS to the users who posted in the official thread requesting them from the start of the day. These were the people refreshing the site and watching your social networks ALL DAY.
There is no excuse for baiting new members - you just lost a huge opportunity.
I would say this is strong evidence that WoW is still going strong. Though I'm sure someone will suggest this was all a conspiracy by Blizzard to create the appearance of popularity.
Pretty sloppy I'd say. You honestly couldn't foresee the demand? The previous give away url was plastered everywhere related to MMO/gaming. You can imagine if your offer is being talked about on mmo-champion (heck, how about a whole thread devoted to it) then you can kind of imagine what would happen next.
Can anyone confirm they recieved a key? How is this possible? I have been sitting here for more or less 3 hours now and refreshing every single frikin page. We are 3 dudes sitting next to eachother doing the same friking thing... HOW?????????????????????????????
Today we held our second beta key handout for World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draeno expansion. Unfortunately this did not go as planned and the community being aware of our 4PM-7PM PDT event window brought our web servers to their knees.
Just as the many users could not access our site - we were also unable to load the keys through our normal administration interface and make a traditional news post, twitter post, etc. The only option we had was to "poke" the keys into our database server so that we could meet the commitment we gave the community to get the keys online in that timeframe. After we did this the 500 keys were gone in just over a minute.
We were unaware that we would see this kind of demand for these keys as we have never seen this in the past with any beta key handout event.
The good news - we still have 4,000 beta keys to issue in the month of July. The rest of these will be issued through a weekly sweepstakes event where we will give users 72+ hours to enter the sweepstakes and we will then randomly select the winners and send them keys in the following 24-48 hours. This is the only way that we can capacitate this kind of demand.
We are very sorry for how difficult it was for users to even try to get one of the few 500 keys we had to offer today and we hope these random sweepstakes will at least give all members a free chance to get access to this exciting beta opportunity.
your servers were down so you coulden't post to facebook or twitter? Some heads up of what was going on would have been great! I fought sleep for 4 hrs refreshing twitter and your news feed, because I have no idea where to even look! Make this a fair fight or you don't deserve to have keys to give away!
why even bother anymore trying for a key? then say they were gone within minutes... complete bs... i was refreshing offer/529 an view/special_offers since 3:50pm PDT an a refresh of the page is 1/2 seconds i would have seen them if the they only lasted a minute or 2.
work on ur systems a lil better...
been invited to every WoW beta even vanilla yet still dont have a invite to it...
I sat here for two and a half hours with 2 browsers and 4 windows open constantly refreshing the pages. I even created a link for the 534th giveaway to increase my chances. I passed up dinner for tonight just for this key. You guys made plenty money off of advertisement revenue while we get nothing. Nothing posted on twitter for two and a half hours. This was an absolutely terrible giveaway/promotion
The moment I saw the announcement that there was a specific time frame the other day, I visibly face-palmed. I knew people would post it everywhere, and I hear the twitch streams with 3,000-20,000 had their mods spam it in the chat. Honestly thought it would never be done like this -- even with so many people asking with the last giveaway -- as anything WoW related that's free will be eaten up by 10,000 bots and 100,000 fans. The beta keys are still selling for $250 easy as well.
From what I understand the whole thing was kind've a kick in the face for a lot of people -- especially long time members of the site. Would have been better to postponed it with an update (which fulfills obligations just fine) rather than "poke" it in. Most have every right to be upset, especially how the staff worded "watch social sites for more information" a ways back with regards to the beta. In addition to the precedence of it being on the front page.
Luckily I knew not to even try to get one, as I foresaw these events to the teeth. Glad to see the site is calming down, though. It was slow even this morning when I was just casually glimpsing.
Sorry to everyone who wasted their times or had stressful server issues or had faith they would post on the front page or on twitter as they normally do. Here's hoping they will be such in the future with their new way of going about this.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
The bit that frustrates me more then anything is the fact that the site had so much traffic, which in turn means that more people saw advertisements meaning that mmorpg gained a huge profit during this space of time.
Yes my account is new but I have been in and around mmorpg since 2007 same with mmohut, I just think that this could have been handled a lot better.
Long time Lurker (even before I made an account) first time poster, but this was a complete cluster ****. I spent almost 2 days even before Thursday was announced reloading and watching the page, as well as this entire window. I figured I might not get a key but i thought at the very least I would have been able to see a link that I might have gotten to click on. I hope at the very least lesson learned, and grats to the bots that got the keys.

It's 9:33PM. We have til 10.
You're giving away like.. 4k more keys soon.
Do a proper random giveaway in the meantime? I'm sure Blizz would understand.
I know I'm grasping for straws, I'm just.. disappointed and frustrated this went down this way.
