Originally posted by Amjoco I have found much worse on other titles. This isn't to bad compared to games like Tera which is horrid. Probably the best thing to do is of course get into a guild. Guilds always have a couple asshats, but usually you accept them more easily.
I was thinking the same thing about Tera when I read the OP. I play SWTOR from time to time. The community I've found is more mute then hateful. In fact, compared to games like WoW and Tera. The general chat is pretty tame.
OP. Just ignore those people. As far as builds and such. Go here http://www.noxxic.com/swtor. You can find the builds for your sage without worrying about the mercy of random strangers in general chat.
general chat channels are usually just full of garbage no matter what game you play.
not even sure why you'd bother to ask such a thing there when there are class forums on the official site dedicated to it.
it's much easier
anyway i find the playerbase to be quite friendly and i'm on a server that's got a pretty bad rep (tofn)
Tomb of Freedon Nadd, that's the server I've been playing on but how can you say the playerbase is friendly when you say you play on a server that's not very pleasant?
As someone on page 1 said, Harbinger is pretty decent. It is also the easiest to troll. If you really want to have some fun, go to the fleet and type in general "Disney just confirmed Miley Cyrus as Jaina Solo in Episode VII". The reactions are.... legendary. But seriously, it's a fun server with a lot of good people.
Upon announcing it going free to play. That's when I jumped ship. Because I know how F2P communities are.
Ain't most MMO's nowadays F2P anyway? There isn't that many P2P MMO's left, WoW still does P2P but that game is gradually declining all the time now since it's old and out-dated.
Well, I doubt it's declining. It still has 6.8 million subs. As far as old and out-dated. There is some truth there. But, with the new expansion upgrading the character models and generally the graphics. That will help a lot i'm sure.

And wow has always been known for it's wonderful community.....or not.
Due to the central hub nature of fleet bases Swtor gen chat is very active. This is both good and bad. Sadly though it is often dominated by a vocal minority and youth who have very little restraint from joining the typical immature banter we see in many online games. I typically turned it off as it is pretty much the same ramblings as you see in xbox chat but with greater enforcement (thankfully).
There is no reasoning so when you witness it simply do not take part, try to ignore or actually ignore using feature, or even zone to a new phased version of the map. Typically there is a lesser populated fleet map which has not been dominated yet by mob rule. I usually always moved to that one myself for the exactly the same reason.
Chat is games is not like real life. Young players (under 25 or even 30 at times) often lack the ability to respect others. It is simply how people are brought up these days. It is a massive issue in the work place as younger employees sometimes lack the ability to respect authority and seem to need to argue everything brought up to them. This is a worst case scenario and not applied to all but it is far more common place today then when I would young (I am 43). Due to complete anonymity one has in internet games this issue is compounded.
This in fact is turning out to be a serious social issue. Usually a younger person who meets me in real life will recognize my age and maturity and act accordingly. They simply treat me different than their own peers. This is natural for most have already learned through their parents that older people have far greater life experience and knowledge and their interests and alignments simply are too divergent to not acknowledge. Sadly on the internet this is usually completely ignored or they utterly lack the ability to tell the difference. It is this disconnect with reality and virtual space that is at issue here.
What drives these players to act with such vitriol is lack of maturity. Maturity is the ability to act appropriately even within environments completely lacking enforcement mechanics. Anonymity is about the least enforced state possible and is the ultimate litmus test for maturity ... and most fail horribly (at any age but I simply reflect the general reality of aging).

I doubt WoW will raise up to the amount of subs it used to have, during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion WoW peaked at 12 Million subs. The new expansion will probably only raise the subs up to 8 million subs at least. In my opinion WoW has become a tried elderly game suffering with dementia, it just doesn't know what it is anymore, is it suppose to be an epic medieval-ish fantasy game or some silly willy-nilly comedy game with lots of strange out of place stuff like monkey slaves in the Deadmines...
Back on topic, ok so you can disable the general chat but what about grouping? I remember playing the first FP and seems like people are not in for the story, they always say skip please, I find people like that annoying. Although I have no idea what PvP will be like?
Im playing SWTOR on and off and am often appalled by the immature, arrogand and unfriendly players. I unsubbed awhile ago as i just had enough. Most are not like that, naturally, but it just takes a few bad apples to ruin the fun.

So what should I do about this problem?
Disable General Chat, Check.
Change server, Uncertain?
PvE grouping, Uncertain?
PvP grouping, Uncertain?
So is the game even worth playing if your uncertain about the general playerbase?

There are very few mmo's out there where the chat in hub towns or starter areas is not monopolised by a few arsehats. It is what the ignore button is for. Just find a nice guild and chat to them.
In my experience I've found the community on Rep side to be far less helpful than on Imp side. Go figure. been playing on Harbinger casually since server merge and will only play Imp side really, personal preference perhaps but Imps seems a bit friendlier.
You cannot go by the chat in Fleet. There is the hive of people seeking attention by trying to shock or abuse people into responding. Ignore the chat there and if you ask any questions , there will be people who will respond in tells with help and some will respond in general chat with jokes and abuse. I do not understand why you would expect anything different when a large group of people get together there will always be rude and obnoxious people around.
That said aside from Fleet Bergeran Colony when I played was good I think it is a RP server and I had no problems in PvE groups . Most people even help each other get datacrons and I have found plenty of nice people but just painting a whole community with a collective label is very unfair to those who help and are nice folk.
I also have not fond a great deal of difference between Empire and Republic but on Bergeran I think there are more Empire players so there were more instances of rude behaviour from Empire but that is because more players play on the Empire side.
The last time I played this game I was asking for talent build advice for my Jedi Sage and all I got were mostly no comments and a guy telling me to shut up...
And this sort of thing is why I don't play this game anymore...
I don't want to play a game full of nasty people.
Though I liked the game in general but the community ruins the game, now I see why everyone wished this was Knights of the Old Republic 3 instead of being an MMO.
Sadly, they play all Games with multiplayer interactions.
Internet Keyboard Thugs are the plague of Online interaction and they know it too.
If they weren't so inclined to prove to the world that their Internet superiority is all wishful thinking, these games would be a lot more friendlier and fun.

Play what you Like. I like SWOTR, Have a referral to get you going! --> http://www.swtor.com/r/nBndbs <-- Several Unlocks and a few days game time to make the F2P considerably easier

Wow, if others would follow your advice nobody would play anything. Because in ANY game you can encounter rude people. So or you are very immature or you are troll. I do not see any other option.

Uh oh... probably shouldn't be on MMORPG with that thin skin either. Seriously, find a guild (preferably a proactive guild) and then join. Most people are decent. Of course, the same decent people also run around with General turned off (I specifically click over to my custom tab in Fleet because it gets ridiculous sometimes). So the chances of finding people who actually will help you is minimized.
It's what happens with a F2P. Station chat becomes like the barrens. So if you're asking there or the starter planet, expect dumb responses.
On planets like Alderaan+ I've had no issues in either general or whatever because they filter out the trolls in those levels.
Overall, I'm glad I came back to the game. I'm almost finished the Jedi Guardian storyline and that's pretty much what I hoped for (it did drag a bit in Chapter 2... but picked right back up).
I love star wars I bought the game and subbed, but if you did not belong to a guild you could not finish lots some quests.
LOL WTF are you talking about?
Let's start with which "lots some quests" are you talking about?
I'm in a guild with about 450+ members currently. I can count the number of quests I've done with them on my hands. In fact, I've levelled a new toon from 1 to 51 so far and the ONLY quests I have issues finding groups for are the Voss Weeklies. Section X is laughably easy to get help with the full weeklies and all the other Heroics have no issues.
That being said... KDY allows people an alternate way to level so a LOT of people choose to grind those (shudder) instead of levelling through planetary arcs. But I've never had issues finding someone to play with (if I needed help with a quest) that took longer than 15-20 minutes (minus Voss.... those puppies for some reason are hard as hell to get groups for because by time people get to them.. the end is in sight).
The lament of every game out there. Current thought is tat AA is worst ever. I remember many other games that were the worst ever. I think more sandboxy type games are worse, while well controlled games are better in this regard. The only game that I've heard of that continually gets kudos for players is LOTRO. It appears to be a more family friendly game.
Upon announcing it going free to play. That's when I jumped ship. Because I know how F2P communities are.

Based on the OP and this one it seems like you have not played in awhile. It is "I remember" and "the last time I played". I would suggest giving it a try again. I have gone through a few flashpoints since trying the game out again and most of the time the story is not skipped unless everyone is playing an alt and decides on it ahead of time. Even when people ask they don't mind if you sit through it.
I have found the community to be a little immature but that is based on Landroval (LOTRO). Every server has its arsehats. Just give it a try. Trying to explain a good build through chat is also a little cumbersome. Likely even a helpful person would just suggest googleing it.

Yes, roll a level 1 character on one of the RP servers and see if you like it better.
The biggest "problem children" in this game are the random ragers in group finder or PuG PvP who wish hell and doom upon any newbies who dare to encroach upon their terrain for the first time.
Or all the elitists on the forums.
But OP, have you ever asked for those things in the general chat of other games? You'd get the exact same replies. Barren chat is barren chat.
I for one spent millions of credits simply giving stuff and unlocks to F2P starters over the past few weeks, I know many others do the same. So my server's community at least isn't so bad at all.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Is there truly any difference being on a roleplaying server vs a normal pvp server? I don't think I've ever really roleplayed, I think I remember trying out roleplaying on WoW a very long time ago and it seemed strange, I'm not a quick keyboard typer and I wouldn't know what to say in character anyway.
Since I'm from the UK the only English EU server that does roleplaying is The Progenitor.
About my current server. Tomb of Freedon Nadd (PvP), is it actually a bad server?
