I don't really like trailers in MMOs. They usually have a lot of CGI which doesn't acurately reflect what the game experience will be like.
I don't really like fancy clothing and armor. This is a personal perference. Having clothing with fancy styles and weapons with fancy shapes, sizes, and runes turns me off a bit. I like the idea of the world be a dangerous, simple, and old fashioned world. Especially in the fantasy/high fantasy setting. I prefer leather armor to look like a simple pieces of brown material possible with rough edges for instance. Most games have it with some fancy design and style only an aristicrat would wear and would make no sense for a person who is going ot hunt in the forest and spend lots of time traveling. A straight sword often looks like something out a lgendary crafter built right level one. Something with fancy curves and runes should be restricted to very rare and almost impossible to get status. It should be hard enough to get a simple rusty sword. Most people would start out with a knife or a plain wooden staff as they are cheap and common. You never see this in modern MMOs though. In the Cinematic and even early levels it is always players decked out in some fancy looking gear.
I was with you until "Most people would start out with a knife or a plain wooden staff as they are cheap and common." Not unless it's survival game or there is some reason to start with feeble equipment like that (sure a staff could be ok) but spears and axes and even bow's are also cheap and much more appropriate. I also hate seeing the ceremonial armour used in combat. Elves seem to work with a certain level of flair, but not too much.
I don't think there's anything they could put in a trailer that would make me not give a game a chance if it has interesting enough features.
I was really put off by the pedo graphics in Dragon Nest, but a friend convinced me to try it and I really enjoyed it. Excellent combat, hilariously bad story but in a good way, and solid PvP. If I had just watched a trailer I never would have installed the game. Now I try to look at games on their merits because there are a lot of gems hiding behind ugly wrappers and I'd rather not miss out on them just because some other studio had better advertising. A trailer can certainly hook me if it's really well done, but it's not going to put me off.
Heavily playing the nostalgia card. That one always makes me suspicious.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
That is the biggest turn off for me. Never played a good free-to-play game, I don't think they exist, but even if they did the payment model itself encourages unethical business practices.
Action Combat
Action combat is fun for a few hours, then the lack of depth kicks in and I'm bored. I aim to play an MMO for 6months+ minimum as I prefer endgame and socialising, but action combat guarantees that I'll be bored within a few days of playing.
Androgynous Men / Asian Style
I actually love the style of monsters to come out of asia, I can even deal with over-sexualised characters or oversized weapons and monsters. But, I can't deal with androgynous men. Too many asian-style games have androgynous men as main characters or protagonists, but I just wanna smash their faces in. Typically, you spend most of your time in combat. You're basically a soldier, a killer, spending years of your life doing physical activities. You aren't gonna be some skinny emo dickhead. It completely prevents me from connecting to my characters (if that is the only choice i have) and from connecting to the game in general.
Story-focused
This seems to be fashionable right now, but without exception every game I've played with a story focus has resulted in piss poor gameplay and, in the mmo world, means they've not really tried to build an mmo, they've built a single player game with some multiplayer. Also, games are shit for telling stories, reading a book is far more engaging and enjoyable (from a story point of view). I want to play my game, not observe my game.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
I don't like trailers at all. Almost each time I watch a trailer, I get turned off by a game. Eventually I decided to not watch trailers and just play a game.
If I kept watching trailers, I would not have ever played the Dragon Age series of games. At the time of this writing, no game to me has ever come close to the treat you get if you dare to go through Dragon Age Origins (the first game) as a Female Elven Mage and try to just get out of your comfort zone and just be a little daring. Just make sure that you have enabled all Mature Dialogue, enable high resolution textures... turn off the lights and have your shot of whatever exotic drink you like most, and with a little a bit of patience...
...you'll be in for one of the most amazing surprises ever!
