After skipping a full update in March, Senior Producer Terry Coleman pieced together what the team has been working on over the past month for Camelot Unchained. The long news post details a lot of the progress the team has made on their backend technology in March, but as always, a Camelot Unchained post wouldn't be complete without a heft dose of concept art!

Most people count development since the KS in April or in October later the same year, 2013 so actually coming up on "only" 9 years really, but who's counting?

What is amazing is they could take so long to deliver so very little, yet still keep the doors open.

Guess it helps that their investor group was led by family.

Lest we forget, the refund backlog is well over two years now, despite Mark's claim he is still paying them.

Most of these companies that show "art updates" are trying to sell you on buying that art...

It's weird that they spend so much energy highlighting art but don't try and sell the jpegs to you.

I'm a backer and just waiting to see "We sold the engine". Then I'll wait another 10 years while someone makes a playable game with this engine

10 years ago I would have screamed YES!
5 years ago I would have said YES!
Nowadays?  I just wonder if there would have been a game to play if Mark had actually sold stuff and raised money…. Then again, it could just as easily be like Ashes or SC with never ending sales but still no released game…

    So… I guess… I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing .

I'm convinced Mark and team lack the talent to create the game they originally set out to build, so no amount of additional money would help since the rot comes from the top down.

Some projects are just destined to fail, this is one of them.

When it comes to the technical side, they certainly don't lack talent.

Game is still pre-alpha, the fact they call it a beta is absurd.

After more than 9 years (counting from first videos on official YouTube where they were showing people in office actively working on parts of game), all they can show is more concept art of lamp posts in their newsletter and an hour-long Twitch "talking head" streams. They are still afraid to show an actual gameplay of the current build through videos and are still struggling to add basic things like properly-functioning lighting into their current engine demo. I logged into the current beta (build #145) yesterday, everything still looks atrocious including lighting which changes in noticeable distinct "steps" as your characters moves in and out of shaded areas, and at night the lighting oversaturates everything to the point of making distant trees look like a single sheet of dirty gray material and rocks and building walls facing the natural light source look like they were lit with a projector beam.

And their other game, "Final Stand Ragnarok", hasn't received a single status update ever since they put it in "Early Access" on Steam 5 months ago: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1605600?updates=true
with virtually no active players (1-2 occasional players during last few months according to Steamdb) yet they still expect people to pay $20 for it...

Concept art is fine for a game early in the planning stages.  It's fine as something to post on the site of a released game to offer wallpapers or some such.  But as a status update ten years into development, it's really not very interesting.

    As evidenced by what exactly?

In real software development, beta means they have written all the code, and tested it at least once as a complete product in alpha test. Now they are in beta, which means the game is done, and is expected to mostly work.

Alpha means all the code is written, and the various parts have been tested. Alpha is when all the code is put together into the finished product and is tested as a whole for the first time.

Of course, in game development, these terms really mean nothing.

Game development often also has gamma testing after alpha and beta, which is the phase where the game has officially launched and is a buggy mess, but the company is promising to fix it.

They can' t show any gameplay because there simply isn't any yet.

To be honest, I can't explain why they sent the FSR to EA either. The only explanation I can think of is that they want to gain experience. But in my opinion, they simply don't communicate enough for that.

The technical demonstrations and tests they put on for backers. Like the massive ARC test with over 2k clients. Or the cherry keep siege.

Why do you put Ashes and SC in the same breath? Two different projects based on Scale and Funding alone with Ashes progressing towards its goals at a much faster pace. This coming from a SC backer of Early 2016. Seems like you just needed a random crowdfunded MMO to use for your comment...Disingenuous if that's the case. You are a legendary commenter though. Lol
