The refrain you will often hear is that 'there are lots of people - they just are all out adventuring'. But this counter-argument overlooks the simple truth that if there are lots of people adventuring on a server, then there should also be lots of people in transit on the server too.

If a server really is hopping, It doesn't matter how remote the content is, you should expect to see people in starports comming to and fro that content.

Thats very true you have a good point.  Even if you have a far away quest or dungeon in the game, I had always seen people in the more central places getting ready to head out and also seeing if they can get more people to go out on the group.  Preparing for a quest and especially waiting on your friends often takes just as much time as going to one.  Kashyyyk and Mustafar having just one starport you would think it would be filled with people coming and going but its not that way at all.

and lets play devil's advocate for a moment and say that SWG had every person on the planet playing (whats it at now like 6 billion?) the bottom line is the game feels empty and depressing to be in just like an old western town with nobody in it buy dead weeds and buildings filled with cobwebs.

I find it so annoying when people tear into it.I suggest you get your facts straight before you bring stupid accusations against a wonderful game.
World of Warcraft is a huge success and will continue to thrive for a long time to come despite what you claim
    oh sorry ,wrong forum
You mean SWG is still going?

I think what they should do, is just stop the game, go back to the very basics of what they were trying to accomplish, (which is a good star wars mmo) and work from there. First off, they could probably work a bit to make the graphics better, but also make the requirements much much lower. I can play WoW on full graphics everything turned to full and i will have hardly any lag except for some in the main cities. But in SWG, to even make the game run normally, I have to turn all of the terrain detail etc. down to nil, I'm serious on this, no joke. After they fix that problem, they could do to make the player's movement's much smoother. In fact, they could take a lot of things from star wars games such as Battlefront 2, or Knights of the old Republic. They also need to advertise what they will be doing as to draw in the appropriate crowd. These days, games that have a bit more to do with real time combat are getting a bit more popular. What they could do is make the shooting classes more like in Battlefront 2, so that they are smoother, and so that actually moving around can have you dodge the bullets that are being shot at you, and so that aiming is actually makes a big difference. Second off, they could make some smaller things a bit better. One thing is that i have noticed, that even with the graphics turned up to full on this game, the landscape just doesn't look to authentinc. Take for example Naboo, when you go there it should be more like rolling plains that sort of are curved into small but wide hills. In this game, the plains are just this flat, basic, boring green floor, and whenever a hill comes up, it doesn't come gradually, it just bumps up like some kind of big rock. This is just an example of one small thing that they could fix. Another could be to make shooting classes have a bit more of an advantage. Jedi can easily close the gaps between their target and them, and so guns are at a disadvantage. So i think that they need to make normal running a bit slower, but then also make force run more smooth and a bit faster, sort of like in BF2 again. They could also stand to make space combat a bit more fast paced. But the one major thing in this main plan that they must do is advertising. They absolutly MUST advertise what they are doing so as to make a large crowd of people who would want to play this type of a game. If they do not advertise their plans, then they will not hear whether or not the gaming community would want such a game, and then there would be a bunch of dissapointment again, sort of like NGE or more like when AO just started out. The long examples that i pointed out were just a few of my little prefrences that i would like, though it would help them a lot to implement the terrain idea that i explained.

i hate to say it but ur prolly right, SOE f***ed this game over so bad....... i ben playin since Pre-CU, i remember my first day in SWG, it was the funnest thing ever. To walk around mos eisley and see the city and think how many more big cities there are and to see the vastness of tatooine alone, but then to think....*theres 9 more worlds out there that i can explore*. The game was great in its day. i mainly still play just for my guild. But im waitin on the Emu..... until then i hope swg can stick it out.  Btw merging servers is a pretty good idea

(Oh and just to add.... i play corbantis.... its not totally dead just hav to go to the right spots... such as theed or restuss, thats where everyone is nowadays....[i miss hangin out at MO, hehe])

November 15, 2005.......the day it all went up in flames

yeah I have been on swg for 3 years now and I have heard that people saying that it was gonna shut down but it has never shut down so until it does I'm not buying it. They would maybe combine the serves first before they shut them down , I mean look what they did to the Matrix, I was on there since beta when they had alot of servers and  then every one left and they combine the servers but look, its still going.

The unique problem with SWG is they can't simply combine servers like other games do as they age/slow down.  Player Cities, player housing, crafting, and resources all make a simple server merge 100% impossible/impractical.  I'm sure you'd be more than upset if you were on hte losing side of the merge and found out your house would be gone, your city would no longer exist, other players have better crafted items then you have, and your crafter lost all of his resources and had to start from square 1.  I doubt we'll ever see a merge as it will only piss off an already infuriated fanbase.

ROFLMAO!!!!!  Classic!!!!  Yeah right, that's the solution.  Why do you think they made the changes they did?  Because they were bleeding subscribers.  The game was in decline way before the CU or NGE.  Those were vain attempts to save the game.  The game never should have gone live as it was flawed in so many ways.  Pining away for the good ole days doesn't change the fact that the game sucked then and it sucks now.

From what's going around, it's done. Folks all around say they've heard SOE has given up the fight and will let the License lapse.

There is ONE, ONE Dev working on Chapter 5. That's one Dev for the last 2 Iconic Professions, and it the worst Publish yet. Most of what is being "added" already existed in the game for some time, it's just being turned on.

Based on recent changes, it's clear LA is no longer involved to ensure Canon. They used to be involved in every decision. That smacks of a falling-out...

The "Lead Dev" hasn't been around for over a month now, and the last Sig he had was about"The best goodbyes going unsaid..."

GM's have been bumping players up to Masters if the ask long enough. This is not a rumor, a friend tried it when they came back for a Trial.

The Dev's know the GCW has been exploited, but said there is no plan for a fix.

LA said they had plans until January '07, but there are still not expansion/content plans. EQ get's an expansion a year or more, but we're going on 1.5 years for Galaxies.

Several Dev's have been missing for a while now, and are either gone or have been moved to another game. "Brand New" Dev's have been popping up on other SOE games, many saying they have been working for SOE for "some time"... I know I'd want a new name, lol...

The Pop's are beyond sad at this point...

There are no signs a Server cleanup will be coming...

All of the "Red Herring" content posts are long gone, with ZERO word on any of them...

Guilds are flooding out to Vanguard, as EVERY SINGLE PERSON I know that still play SWG, none of which plan on staying in Galaxies. One was a Player Spotlight only a few months ago. More games are coming...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

A few people keep saying this, but that's not at all how it happened.  The hologrind pissed off a few people.  The CU pissed of some people.  The NGE pissed off lots of people.  During the Pre-CU era, months of the development team floundering like a fish out of water: adding smelters, rugs, paintings & nerfing Melons instead fixing software defects and adding Star Wars to the game world stunted growth while the market waited to see what they did with the game.  But even the President of the company posted on the forums that they could have treaded water at 250K  or so under Pre-NGE (w/ expansions) had they wanted to. They changed game mechanics to go after new markets, not to keep subs from bleeding.

I like SWG the way it use to be but not the way it is now. So maybe  a complete shut down is what this game needs! Then bring it back up in about 2 or 3 years with a new company behind it not SOE and see what happends, something good I hope

Hasn't this doomsday post been done time and time again, and everytime it comes up short?

Look, I hate the NGE as much as anybody.  But the game (in its current incarnation) will be around for the next 1.5 years or so, and maybe longer.  Yes, it's bargain bin status, but hell, there are plenty of Star Wars bargain bin games out there.

The game, unfortunately, isn't going any where.  Like a horse with a gimped leg, it needs to be taken out to the pasture and shot, but as long as it draws subs, it's going to stay where it's at.

well I tried the game again recently and the populations were very low, no-one on my friends list was around anymore, the lag was really bad, worst I had ever seen on SWG including pre-cu. I must of seen 10 people if that in player cities over a month and that was by shops that are still running and that is not an exageration. I played on Ahazi and Chimera, with touching my entertainer on Gorath, which had only mastered one tree, but was master entertainer when I signed backup lol. Last time I was ingame was CU, and I signed off as they made it level based.

Most people I saw in one place, now bear in mind I did not bother with Rustuss, was in Mos Eisley, about 15, and half of them were spammers buying or selling stuff or general chat about, I am the most UBER player in the world, Theed was pretty much empty, a few people around the palace, imp or reb depending on who's npc's were out, Corellia, gord in the starport I only saw 2 afk players, and I am sure they were the same people the following day lol, Bestine ghost, AH ghost, Nymm ghost, all my the usual places I used to regulary visit ghost, I think you get the point. For others that say it is increasing I do not have any reference to compare against after the NGE hit, but this was bad.

Combat haha what a joke, 4 attacks, lol and all proffs have similar attacks, combat was just so boring, there was no challange at all, if I wanted a game with no challange I would get my old doom disks out and go IDKFA mode, it is carbear country now. I tried out crafting with the 2nd char, and that is so easy now and mastered munitions in 8 days, I had so many resources left over that I did not have to put out any harvestors which was good, must say though I did enjoy that part the most for the month, as it was still the same, pointless from a selling point of veiw, but still the same, this part alone has made me want to sign backup again, but I just can't bring myself to do it lol, the rest is just so kak.

For the community I saw players telling others to go back to thier dead servers, flame wars between what I guess as kids, I did see one or two newbs, asking for help, in the old days you would most likely see a flood of responses, but the only responses I could see was, buying gold plaques, buying holopets etc, I did have some chats with vets, who were friendly but others just ignored.

Now I would come back full time for a classic server anytime, I loved PRE-CU, and for my own game play and sense of fun I had no problems with the holo grind (was not intrested in unlocking Jedi), bugs, imbalance etc, CH was so much fun. On Chimera, I had a Doc/ Swords, respecced to a few over the month but ended up with Smuggler the original master I done on this char before going doc, I played it because it was fun and because of how you could customise your char, the community were friendly and also helpded to make the game.

Will the game be shutting down anytime soon, who knows thier business sense has not been that good for the past year+ and they could be running at a loss, or breaking even, would I like to see it go, no, for the vets that are left and the others that are enjoying it right now, but I also yes, as it is the final way of $OE & LA admitting we fucked up big time and we are the biggest smegs on the planet......

The license to make a Star Wars MMO is surely atm 'owned' or leased by SOE, so no other companies can even think about making another one yet until it is surrendered, or there would be big lawsuits. So can SOE please throw in the towel and give some professionals a crack, it's only fair. They've had their turn at pool, but potted the black off the break.

Seriosley, If they just would have continue working on pre-cu or even the CU, It couldent be worse.

It's just retarded. Come on, the subs havent been this low during any time of  the NGE.

Face the facts, It cant last much longer.

Starwars Galaxies, An Empier Diveded, That's what it says on my box anyway.
