I played the game right after release.Quit before the first add-on.Really liked it back then the game was better then what it is now as far as i can tell.
Bored with the latest online games released last year wich for me mostly was crap , i re-activated my old account.I can say that it's dead to what it used to be playerwise. You don't see the crowds anymore that used to.I miss that time i admit. But to say the game is dead is far from. This game will not shut down this year imho.
I play on the european server and allthough it's far less populated then it used to i still see more people around then most here say/claim.When i was out questing yesterday i encountered 8 different solo players of wich a few helped me out within half an hour.I know it's not a large number but it wasn't in a city and also i encountered 5 other people who all just started the game apart from the 8 "vets" i had seen.I know it aint what it was and i understand the angry reactions that fly by , but it would really surprise me if this game dies before the end of this year.Offcourse in the cities it's hard to tell since most r just afk-yelling to sell something. Most times id see bout 5 to 20 players in a city.
On the other hand i couldn't care less if it did...i'm waiting for the mmorpg-summerreleases so this is just a lill something to do.For me i think it probably will be the memory of what it was that will keep me playing till summer then what it is now.Like i played DAOC a year ago..for oldtimes sake.
From what's going around, it's done. Folks all around say they've heard SOE has given up the fight and will let the License lapse.
That's been said for the last 2 years, man. From everybody that has a source, thinks they have a source, or says they have a source to make themselves look cool.
Noone outside SOE and LA knows.
If they were going to let it lapse and the game was going to be shutdown, the crafter revamp (heh) wouldn't be happening.
Yes, devs have left. Devs left during alpha. Devs left during beta. Devs left on released. Devs left after release. Devs left and continue to leave everyday. It's nothing new. Noone works on the same project everyday for the same company.

I just strated back playing again aboout two weeks ago and I remember how it use to be before the CU and after the CU, a heck of alot more people than it is now. Now I don't know if that means that it is gonna shut down or drag on for a few more years or whatever but I really don't care either I'm just trying to pass a lil time before Age Of Conan & Star Trek online comes out then I'm gone for good.
The license to make a Star Wars MMO is surely atm 'owned' or leased by SOE, so no other companies can even think about making another one yet until it is surrendered, or there would be big lawsuits. So can SOE please throw in the towel and give some professionals a crack, it's only fair. They've had their turn at pool, but potted the black off the break.
I don't know man, that's kind of harsh. It wasn't a bad game at the very beginning. It was buggy, and remainded buggy, throughout my time playing it but it was still playable. I'd have to agree with what someone else has said; if they gave it to a different company it may just end up like WoW, only from the ground up this time and not some lame patch.

of Course it will turn into WoW, but WoW games made from the ground up have playerbases, that will bolster the SW IP until it's surrendered to an innovative company.
after contraversial reviews on the last 3 movies, and SWG:NGE, the SW IP has seen many a storm, and is frankly becoming old, and although i LOVE star wars, it's not nearly as reseliant as it was before all of this crap.
Frist off let me state im a vet a long time vet from the start. Ok now that i said that, i want soe to shut the game down. They ruined peoples lifes, Ok i use to be in a guild of 100s when the nge hit bam there goes my guild all gone, sure a few of them hanged in there for a bit and sure there are still like 2 or 3 who come on to say hi but thats all they do. Soe needs to stop beating this dead horse and get rid of it. The game isnt a mmo just a fancy chat app. I would rather soe give up the game give it to someone eles and let them take over. Soe(sony online entertamint) are a nothing but creedy nerf hearders. Dont defend soe eather were talking about the company that resleases a expsaion and then the nex day Makes a whole new game. I mean when swg frist hit dam was it a game and hell the cu wasnt that bad eather i mean people lived on this game. I mean i heard that a couple met on swg and got married ok i mean come on how messed up is thay takeing away something so dear to paying custmers its unheard of and just plain messed up. So the only thing for this vet to do is wait for soe to go to hell and give the linces away.
(warning , this is the rants of a mad swg vet read at your own risk)
It would be great to see those dick heads at SOE give up the licence. It would be great have someone who gives a damn about the fans of Star Wars a shot at making SWG worth playing again. Bio-Ware made a pretty awsome single player star wars rpg, i wonder if they have the talent to move into the online market, or if they even want to.
The population is now way too low to even support the operating costs of the machines, bandwidth, CSR's,forums, and the 2-3 devs they have left much less the $10 mil license fee from LEC. As I stated back in the summer, I think the shutdown is imminent. The only way they have out is classic. Which I doubt they will do.
So you stated this last summer? Why the heck should we listen to you now? I hate SWG as much as the next vet but give it a rest man. Move on. Everyone else has.
Well get over it soe quit on swg. they only care about vanguard. Don't excpect more than 1 update very 6months to keep the really obsessed people playing. My guess... March 18, 2007- "Soe announces a shut down of Star Wars Galaxies."

LoL. Now THAT is a funny statement. You are implying that SOE is altruistic, and that they dont WANT to make any more money off of this. It sure is funny to have someone put out the idea that SOE isnt in it for the money.

Um seems to me they dont want money and want it to slowly fade away..cause if they wanted it to survive they would have offered classic servers and NGE ones..that way you collect from both sides of the coin..so Many vets like me had several accounts but my 3 accounts wasnt worth it to them..so merge em wait an see what happens..and since i dont play anymore and wont get my old game back i could careless if the game shuts down..just would prove a point SOE was Wrong and didnt want the the 250k + vet accounts either..cause if they did the math is very simple 2 versions would generate mula than current sub base is doing..cause evern all the bad press would bring in the many that were curious about the game we all bitch to have back....
for those here claiming the game can and will run with a small player base...your forgetting one major issue. The License costs SOE 10 million dollars a year. SOE will need like 150k players just to cover that cost alone. Add in server maintenance, dev paychecks, electricity, paperwork, etc and the number is higher...maybe even 200k is needed to break even.
We all know SWG doesnt have anywhere near that many accounts. Fact is the game is LOSING money and therefore any business will cut its losses eventually. No way this game will last much longer
SOE runs so many MMO's that with the station pass a few games can hemorage money and they can still keep it going.
Remember SOE is a huge company and they have the Matrix Everquest and a whole bunch of other games to compliment this one.
Its not their primary focus even they just want to make money at the end of the day which is what they do or the worst games of the station pass would be shut down.
As much as I would love to see a shutdown, I honestly can't see it happening, what i can see happening is zero content being introduced after all expertise is added, obviously a few bug fixes now and again. The game will then be left on station access as an added bonus.
If anything we should of started with NGE then had CU then Pre-CU, the game has gone backwards... somone at the top needs the sack for allowing that to happen. This without taking into account all the lies, broken promises underhand tactics (ToOW anyone?) piss-poor CS.. the list goes on.
Somthing that I found funny was Helios worked on the commando and squad leader which was publish 24, NGE came out in publish 25 so this tells me they made and rushed nge out in a matter of weeks since Helios made the damn thing....

Chances are SWG is making more net profit now than it did during the last few months of Pre-CU, my numbers might be off but there was somthing like 50 Devs, Engineers technicians etc working purely on SWG, also SWG wasn't on station pass. So lets be generous and say they had 300k active subs and only 40 devs pre-cu, now they have what 50k subs but only 5 devs working on the game? Customer service is also down by 75% I hear.
Also how many subs does station pass have? Because when swg was added to it, they raised the price by a few $.
I quit the day CU went to test center so I don't know the numbers well just saying a few things you need to think of when you say swg is loosing money, it could well be but NGE is most likely better off profit wise than swg pre-cu. Who honestly thinks SOE would be still running it if it's costing them, doubt the shareholders or directors would allow it TBH.
Alot of peopel say that it will shut down before the year is up, I ask if it does shut down how long will it take for another company to make another SWG?
Fairly recently, BioWare and Pandemic have joined forces to start a new top secret SCI FI mmorpg in BioWare's new Austin Texas labs. The rumour is that SOE will soon lose the license and BioWare/Pandemic will gain it. What a HOLY day that will be if it is indeed true. Take it with a grain of salt the size of your fist, but hey, it's hope.
I'm sure I don't need to mention both companies have worked on Star Wars titles with BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic [arguably the best Star Wars EU story ever told] and Pandemic having worked on action titles such as Battlefront and Clone Wars.
So I say let Galaxies please rest in peace and bring in a golden age for Star Wars online gaming.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

Lucas Arts did say they were not happy with SWG and that they are looking for a new Star Wars MMORPG to throw their support to.
Rumor has it that Bioware is looking to higher game programmers with MMO experience. If this holds true, a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG could be in the works.
"Whosoever shed last blood By man shall his blood be shed For immunity of God make he the man Destroy all that which is evil So that which is good may flourish And I shall count thee among my favored sheep And you shall have the protection of all the angels in Heaven."
Honestly it doesn't have to be KOTOR based... just well done. I would honestly pick up the game after RotJ. They could keep the content flowing for a long time if they set that up, then dive into the EU books or write their own stories. I was so fed up with Galaxies once I actually wrote this huge thing on how 'my Star Wars MMO' would be... cuz that's what I do... I'm a role player / writer / actor / storyteller / RPG system [pen and paper] designer and that's what I enjoy doing. Either way it's sad to know we won't hear any news for a long time and even IF we do, the game won't be ready for like 3-5 years probably.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

Not likely that SOE would release the license to another firm to make a competing SW-themed MMO... I'm afraid the franchise has been killed, just like AD&D. Lets home upcoming games like LOTR and WAR don't kill those as well.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. They have to be in the "RED" as far as subscriptions are right now. The only thing keeping this game kicking is their station pass.
