Whats the second most popular mmorpg ?

We all know WoW can boast players in the millions still but which pay to play mmo comes in second place ( talking world wide numbers here and has to be released in the west ) .

I know its sad, but mmodata says so. Or maybe some Korean f2p game noone knows in the west...

I would guess Aion. It may not be doing well in the west but more than makes up for it in Asia.

P2P it's Aion, several data confirms that. But you go F2P there are numerous asian games that have millions of players worldwide

Not really, this is not a site dedicated to a game, its a troll forum with decent articles about the genre.

No, it's not. It have about the same number of players now as when I started a few years ago. But that number is possibly 200K or so, it is far from number 2. It might be lower also, it seems like it have more than AoC and WAR when you play it however.
The largest games besides Wow is Aion, Guildwars, Eve and LOTRO.
Aion is probably largest but it is hard to be sure. On Xfire is Aion on 8 and GW on 12 but it isn't that good to compare numbers between games.
EQ2 is probably somewhere between 8 and 10 on the western MMO list.
I don't see any big change in the top list either until TOR, WoDO and GW2 hits the store, and Blizzard next game but it will probably take some years. The new Final fantasy game might also become popular, hard to say yet, it depends a lot on how the console players will like it.

It's a sight dedicated to all MMORPGs, thus, it must represent the populations of all MMORPGs.

ok, i might be biaised, but i would say Eve, which apparently currently has 300k + active subs
Aion might have more at the moment, but its still too early to say if its going to retain that kind of number, Eve's numbers represent a still growing retained playerbase - personally i'd be interested in what the true figure is of Aions retained subscriber base after 4 months, all have at the moment is the box sales which arent all that definitive.
They did not lie, the problem is that F2P games release the total of members registered and not members playing regularly.
For example i registered to that game one time to check it out, but i never logged again on it. Still, im part of those 50 million
i would say EVE also if were just talking about the west. I'm sure Aion had a pretty good start but its lost a lot of players after the free month was up. I don't think Aion will suffer as bad as WAR and AoC, but I highly doubt it will keep good numbers once TERA comes out.
It is all about the Matrix Online ... I mean how can that not be the second most popular MMO out there. I mean we all want to be like Neo and fly around and dodge bullets and all that crap. I can't even fathom how you couldn't easily pick you MxO as the second best it is a no brainer. It is like not acknowledging that Canada is America Junior. Everyone knows it. It is so common knowledge I almost laughed wh... ... ... huh? What is it? ... excuse me a sec. ... ... hmm ... really? ... ... punch and pie ... ... ... you don't say ... ... interesting ... ... wait they killed Captain America? well thats your opinion, I don't share it. i think Aion has a bunch of flaws that i could get into but i don't want to start a flame war. I'll bring this post back up in a year and we'll see how it fairs.

I see. That is why I felt so lonly on the eu server (if there is one, I cant remember). The 2nd most popoular mmo is a hard thing to say and its fun to see that some of you are trying to set the record

As far as WoW alternatives, I'd say Guild Wars for it's business model of buy the software rather than the subscription. EVE gets an honorable mention for increasing subscriptions over time.
There are free item shop games and other P2P MMORPG which come and go, depending on how quickly players become bored with the flaws and grind.

I got it from here but I think Runescape has traditionally held the #2 spot and Aions numbers may have fallen some since this was created. Not positive on that tho.

In fact, when you strip out stuff that's not monthly subscriptions in Asia, you come with #2 as being...Final Fantasy XI. (which, contrary to what a lot of people think, charges the same monthly subscription fee in Japan as elsewhere and has never even been released in Asia outside of Japan)
