I would take admriker's comments with one large grain of salt. He has said himself that he isn't looking for a game so much as a "virtual galaxy simulator."
I want a game and STO is alot of fun.
Then they should have made another star trek game, not a star trek mmo. funny thing about making games but calling them mmos is that you get your game, but then you need to pay to play your game, unlike the single player or free online games that it should have been in the first place. paying a monthly fee naturally demands a higher level of content and interaction, so making a mmo a "game" is really quite unacceptable when you really think about it.
nobody in the OB has reached any kind of higher end content yet, and hell when a game is launched its usualy pretty light on high end group/fleet oriented content....hmmm I wonder why. You people need to pipe down and maybe think about some previous mmo releases, an MMO is an evolving entity, by no means is the launch product anything close to what the game could be in 3-6 months....DOOM and GLOOM THE END OF THE WORLD IS UPON US!....give me a break...ugh.
Wow, so many posts in a row and you didnt manage to give any useful info, just bashing other people. Fanboys FTW!
lol its not my fault that 80% of the people in this thread dont seem to understand what an MMO is these days...."oh woe is me where be the glory days?" they are gone, MMO's are mainstream now, your sandbox, open world, do what I want, hide from my abusive father and lock myself in a game days are over, sorry folks. Its time to wake up and look at these things for what they are...GAMES....people take it way to seriously lol all the haters on here are getting so worked up over this, its a game. The thing getting me worked up is how seriously you all take it! *laugh*
People like you are the reason that the genre has gone so far down hill.
You are willing to accept shitty products for some reason. Why do you think it is okay to put out a shitty product?
It is a "game" as you put it but it is still a product and a product should be finished when it is released to the general public. That is business 101. Selling a finished product. They are not selling a service, they are selling a product and this product is not finished nor ready for release. Yet that is exactly what they are going to do. People like you will give them your money and then stop playing in a few months and buy the "next" big thing and so on and so forth.
Gamers need to wake up for sure and stop supporting companies like this that put out half ass MMO games. This is Star Trek. STAR TREK it has so much data and lore you could make a great MMO but instead this company made a half ass combat sim game and slapped Star Trek skin on it. Its unacceptable.
Once us gamers wake up and start demanding that our "Games" be finished before we shell out any money the better the genre will get. Shit how many games in the last 2 years have done shitty because it was not finished upon release. That is the problem here.
This game is not fun, how anyone can say other wise is beyond me. The ground combat is chunky at best, the space combat is far to simple and easy. The only good thing is the amount of customazation you can do which is not enough to call this a good game.

the problem here professor is that people for the most part arent knocking its "finishedness" they are saying it sucks because "it has no soul (cry me a river)" or "the engine is not to my liking" or "this should have been star wars galaxies pre-cu...accept star trek", not the state of its development. Honestly I loved those games too, I played them all, and still play any sandbox that comes my way, subbed to fallen earth right now. However I am also a realist, and the VAST majority of the people subscribing to MMO's nowadays will be happy enough with what STO gives them, there are very few hardcore mmo's anymore, and we are blessed when one comes along, but in the end, huge IP's like Star Trek will never again be those games....and you just have to be honest about it, no amount of crying we few do will change that, and I've accepted it, im sorry you havent and I leave you to your misery.

It doesnt have to be "hardcore" or whatever u mean with that. It just needs to be a good Star Trek game with some depth and something to do without mindless combat. I mean this game is clearly for kids, who likes to pew pew with their cool space ship, and Star Trek was clearly not.
This game is not fun, how anyone can say other wise is beyond me.
Here's the problem, and it's one shared by a lot of arrogant "MMO vets" these days - your opinion actually means nothing beyond yourself, but you're incapable of seeing anything or anyone beyond yourself and your "reality".
The fact is that there are people that like STO, and people that don't like it. Neither type of person is "right". They just have differing opinions on what they find fun. It's really that simple.
I have just accepted the fact it is not a game I want to play and have moved on.
However, to be honest and help those out wha are on the fence. Here is what to expect in the game in the shortest way I know how.
Ship combat is very similar to Pirates of the Burning sea. Positioning and tactics apply here with special attacks coming from you and your bridge officers..
Ground combat is very close to Dragon Age in concept. They even have a pause game to issue orders and tactics. I believe this is only availble when you are not grouped tho. When not grouped you have an away team that consists of your Bridge Crew ( if you want ) and "red shirts". Your character is basically the standard MMO fare on movement and controls. The main difference from the DA comparison is you do controll the Bridge Officer's skills and training but, you cannot physically play as them, only issue orders and commands.
Put all of that together in a heavily instanced Guild Wars type of world with Star Trek theme and you have STO. Again, I am not saying this is awfull or wrong just what to expect in game.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
This rant cracks me up. "Unacceptable"?? So what are you going to do? Sue them?
And who says you cannot make a combat sim out of star trek? Remember Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force? Now that is a fun game. All gamers need to do is to buy games that entertaining them. What is this "supporting companies" crap? You think i decide my purchase decision based on some love/hate relationship with companies? Get real.
I'd have to completely disagree. Space combat feels totally different than CO. I've beta'd both and still play CO. Now if you wanted to make the argument that ground combat is reminiscent of CO, that could be a debatable topic.

That is a problem, Your willing to accept and move on when a company takes an IP as large as Star trek and makes a horrible game.
Same with WAR. WARs IP is great to make a game as crappy as they did is unacceptable to me as a gamer. I am not a trekke in fact I cant stand Star trek for the most part but the IP could and should have been a great MMO. Ever play X3. That is what I expect when I hear a Star trek MMO is being made.
MMORPGs today have no "soul" or "heart". They are not even good "games". I am sorry but I am not willing to accept sub par games, nor am I going to just say "screw it what can I do about it anyways". I am going to do the only thing I can do and that is not support companies that release unfinished products.
I will never accept never. Never say never. We as gamers have allowed this to happen, we are at fault just as much as these companies because we have people like you that are willing to write it off and accept this garbage they are selling us.
As you can see by this thread, it seems that alot more gamers are getting sick and tired of subpar MMOs and sooner or later the gaming companies will have to take notice. Their are a few games that are in production that could change the genre but for the most part its the same old plate of food on different color plates.

I look at this way, for you gaming is serious business, maybe the only thing you find any kind of happiness in? for majority of us its source of entertainment, a pass time hobby. Unless i can't even log into a game i paid for, why would i be pissed or angry? The only thing that matters is that its FUN and ENTERTAINING. If i can launch the game, play it and enjoy and log off after couple of hours, that product is not shitty in any way. I am getting my money's worth.
People like you who have nothing better to do in life, love to bitch and moan about trivial things like video games. Try spending this much energy on some real issues. Atleast you will contribute a little to society.

Everyone has a different version of fun. What you quoted is what I think and what I think, per this thread, seems to go along with the majority.
Some people are going to like STO because it is Star Trek. Star Trek, Star Wars, LoTRO are all IPs that will have fans no matter how crappy the game really is. The point is that these gamers need to stop accepting subpar products.

No, I am not going to give them my money. That is what unacceptable meants. It is not acceptable to me. The only thing I can do is speak with my money which is what I will be doing when I pass on this game and move on.
Nobody said you cannot make a combat sim out of Star Trek but you cannot just make a combat sim MMO from Star Trek. That is not acceptable to the great IP that Star Trek is.
Supporting companies that make subpar products only allows those same companies to put our more subpar products. I do not purchase games based on the company, I purchase games based on my entertainment. When a company makes a game that is subpar, I do not buy the game which is how you go about not supporting a company.
Supporting a company is giving them my money for a product or service. That is how you support a company.

Ah, the golden hue of nostalgia....
The games of the past had no more "heart" to them than what you as a player was willing to ascribe to them if you liked them, or they resonated with you.
They also weren't any more perfect, or "finished", than most of today's games. Again, that's nostalgia talking.
Your definition of subpar is an opinion that is meaningless to anyone other than you.
Your right my opinion means nothing to anyone else but me but that does not mean i am incapable of seeing anything else.
The point is that these gamers need to stop accepting subpar products.
my question is, subpar to what? Your lofty, needs to give me a reason to live, expectations? sorry bub, thats unreasonable

Sorry,Are you honestly saying that people will be saying "well the game is really terrible but hey I am in Star Trek/Lotro/Star Wars so I am going to keep paying and playing"?
I think you should give the player base a bit more credit than that(although sometimes you do wonder).
People will only pay and play what they find fun and not just because they enjoyed the movies/books/series.
Honest mate a little more credit is due here.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Nope his definition of subpar is exactly same as mine.
Man you guys really have to learn to edit the quotes, won't be long till 1 reply is taking a page.

Ahh come on. The people that like this like to Pew Pew Pew and that's it.
And that's what they will do for a month (or maybe two at best) and then they move on to the next BIG Pew Pew Pew thing that comes along.
It has nothing to do with Arrogants or being a MMO vet for crying out loud!
It's the MMO vets that know what an MMO used to be about. And why old MMO's like UO, EQ1 and AC for example, were so popular and are still around today. Or EVE Online, WoW or EQ2 for that matter.
Those games had actually depth, content, social interaction and longetivity. Those games actually build up a community that is still around today. There are still people playing those games and done so since day 1.
MMO's are not like single player games. Wich you play for a month or so and then ditch and move on to the next big thing.
It's the people that started treating MMO's like this and make companies like Cryptic get away with crap like this.
Its clear to me that obviously alot of people on here are not aware of the trend MMO's are taking. and if you are, you have some delusion that you can stop it, thats fine, I know a guy that can write you a prescription for that...

The "majority", as in a handful of people talking here on a forum? Not exactly a significant sample.
Not that it matters. Contrary to the views of many "MMO vets", subscriber-base numbers are not a vote - they don't factually certify "fun" versus "not fun".
Everyone does, in fact, have a different version of fun. Neither yours nor mine is "right".
You opining that something is "subpar" also doesn't make it so. That's just another opinion, and one of zero worth to anyone but you.
Are people going to like STO because it's Star Trek? That'll probably be an initial draw, but I doubt many will continue to play it if they think it's a bad game.

Do you not think it is strange that you use every MMo from WoW backwards as games that were allowed time to build a community and grow and still be going today.
Now maybe the devs have got some what lazier but do you not think that maybe a chunk of that is that alot of mmo players came with the elephant that was WoW and have a totally different outlook on what a mmo should be at release?
Something to think about.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
Nope, sorry I play games as my hobby but like most people, they take their hobby seriously. Fun and Entertaining are the only factors in judging a game but I cannot have fun nor be entertained if the game is not finished or way to easy. Games are designed to be challenging. From the early days of pong to MMORPGs, the point of games is to provide a fun, entertaining challenge for the gamer.
I do not find easy games nor subpar games fun or entertaining.
Also maybe if you contributed to society half as much as I do, you could tell me that I have nothing better to do then bitch about games. You are on a MMORPG gaming forum, what do you want me to talk about? Soccer? Get a life. I have a great life thanks, I work full time, I own a house and 2 cars, take care of my dog, and I am only 27. Oh also I work as an intern at a different company during weeknights as well. So I have a ton of things beside gaming, I just make sure I make time for my favorite activity

It doesnt have to be "hardcore" or whatever u mean with that. It just needs to be a good Star Trek game with some depth and something to do without mindless combat. I mean this game is clearly for kids, who likes to pew pew with their cool space ship, and Star Trek was clearly not.
My gaming blog
Here's the problem, and it's one shared by a lot of arrogant "MMO vets" these days - your opinion actually means nothing beyond yourself, but you're incapable of seeing anything or anyone beyond yourself and your "reality".
The fact is that there are people that like STO, and people that don't like it. Neither type of person is "right". They just have differing opinions on what they find fun. It's really that simple.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Alot? its like 6-7 people bantering back and forth about it.....id say thats a pretty small number....

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Here's the problem, and it's one shared by a lot of arrogant "MMO vets" these days - your opinion actually means nothing beyond yourself, but you're incapable of seeing anything or anyone beyond yourself and your "reality".

my question is, subpar to what?

Cheers

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
